Abstract We propose to analyse archival WFPC-2 U, B, V, and far UV observations of the nearby spiral galaxy M33 to search for ``populous'' star clusters and study their photometric properties. Star clusters are ideal laboratories for the study of stellar populations and star formation history in galaxies. In individual packets, they represent single age and single abundance points which can be used to test stellar evolutionary models. Many of the M33 fields found in the archive are of nuclear and crowded spiral arm regions which are impossible to resolve from ground- based images, and which will extend the current knowledge of star clusters in this galaxy. Specifically we will: 1) produce a catalog of cluster positions, magnitudes, colors, and sizes 2) obtain age estimates from the integrated cluster colors 3) obtain mass estimates from theoretical mass-to-light ratios 4) obtain independent estimates of ages and metallicities from follow up spectroscopy This information will be combined with similar data for stellar clusters in the Milky Way, M31 and the Magellanic Clouds, yielding a clearer picture of the evolutionary history of these galaxies and the dependence of cluster formation on global galactic properties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: ELECTRONIC Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8001( 1) - 04/16/98 14:14 - [ 2] Summary Form for Proposal 8001 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
