5. Abstract

The proximity and brightness of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant make it an
outstanding candidate for detailed investigation of shock processes in astrophysical
environments. We propose to analyze archival WFPC2 emission line images of a known
encounter between the supernova blast wave and an interstellar cloud in order to
understand the physical conditions and their evolution on scales of gas- dynamical
significance. We will answer key astrophysical
