Abstract During a survey for distant carbon stars in the Galactic Halo we discovered an extremely bright, R=15.2 broad absorption line quasar at a redshift of z=3.87. The quasar is positionally coincident, within a few arcsec, with the IRAS source FSC08279+5255. This unique object appears to be the highest luminosity source yet known. Here we request NICMOS time to allow a through investigation of the system, aiming in particular to quantify to what extent gravitational lensing may be amplifying the intrinsic flux. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propse to obtain short (~20 second) exposures at 12 dither positions in F110W and F160W on NIC1 and F205W on NIC2, giving SNR>150 per exposure. (We estimate the NIR luminosity to be approximately 10mJy). This will allow us to contrain the spatial structure of the source, and quantify whether it is being gravitationally lensed. The color information will further allow us to place constraints on the redshift of any extended emission we may detect.
