Abstract We propose to use the superb spatial resolution of the WFPC2 camera to obtain second epoch exposures in the fields of several Galactic halo globular clusters and dwarf satellite galaxies. The proper motions of these populations will thereby be determined to unprecedented accuracy, approximately an order of magnitude better than has been previously possible. This will improve our understanding of the shape and distribution of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way, it will allow better scrutiny of formation models of the halo, it will allow us to investigate the dynamical evolution of the Galactic satellites, and it will help constrain the dynamics of foreground Galactic components. Stellar populations studies of the Galactic halo objects can be (in some cases, substantially) improved, since contaminants from foreground stellar populations and background galaxian populations will be excluded from color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions. Furthermore, we may also discover high redshift supernovae. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8095( 11) - 11/08/99 11:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The proper motion accuracy is limited by the uncertainty in the extragalactic reference frame and by the uncertainty in the geometrical transformations between CCD frames. Exposure time: To measure proper motions to the accuracy stated in Table 1, we need to determine the extragalactic reference frame using relative centroid positions (from cross-correlation of the marginal density distributions) of ~ 50 compact galaxies, to an accuracy of 0.02 pixels. Below a total exposure of ~ 6000 sec, these conditions are no longer met, as we found by experimenting with the the F606W Hubble Deep Field exposures (a representative halo field). We therefore request two orbits for each of the halo objects listed in Table 1, except NGC 5694 and NGC 5824. For these two clusters, the first epoch data is short (1600 sec), so a single orbit per cluster is requested (the measurement uncertainties for these two objects are likely to be a factor of 2 -- 3 larger than those listed in Table 1). To better sample the stellar profiles, we will dither the exposures. The compact galaxies we have used to define the extragalactic reference frames are generally blue, so we will preferentially re-observe the halo fields with broad-band F555W and F606W filters. Orientation angle constraints: The second epoch frames should be taken at an orientation angle as close as possible to the first epoch frames. The reason for imposing this observational constraint is the uncertainty in the geometric transformations between pixel positions on different frames; clearly this uncertainty directly influences the final positional uncertainty in the centroid of an object. The (designed) optical distortion of the WFPC2 camera has been carefully fit by Trauger Etal\ 1997, with bicubic polynomials in both the x and y directions, which can be used to ``undistort'' the chips. We have found that the best way to compute the geometric transformations between frames is to fit the positions (x_m, y_m) on a master frame to positions (x, y) on some other frame using a simple linear transformation: x_m= A + C x' - D y', y_m= B + D x'+ C y', where x' and y' are given by the Trauger formulae x'=T_x(x, y), y'=T_y(x, y). The rms uncertainties in the Trauger distortion map are approximately 0.1 pixels on the WF chips. However, as shown by Ibata & Lewis (1998), the uncertainties in differential measurements over small number of pixels (up to ~ 10 pixels) must be smaller than 0.02 pixels. This is the reason why it is desirable that the frames in both epochs are exposed in approximately the same position and same orientation angle.
