Abstract During the past 6 yrs, we have demonstrated that UV spectra of 4 unique non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variables in quiescence provide accurate temperatures, rotation rates, chemical abundances of the photosphere and Einstein redshift masses of the accreting white dwarfs in these systems. We are now in a position to advance to a broader and deeper understanding of fundamental tangential accretion physics and a global understanding of the accreting white dwarf as a function of its evolutionary history by extending our analyses to 16 systems that are carefully selected to ensure detection of their underlying white dwarfs. Applying the STIS spectral advantages of high sensitivity and resolution to this large sample, we can refine the distribution of temperatures, rotational velocities and composition as a function of orbital period and system type, and determine the correlation of accretion belts with missing or weak boundary layers and anamolous compositions. The physical insights f rom these simplest and most obser v able systems should apply in the broader context of equatorial accretion flows onto central compact objects in a variety of disk accreting systems (T Tauri stars, X-ray binaries, disk accreting symbiotics, Algols with transient disks). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8103( 15) - 12/16/01 16:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Since we have past HST FOS observations of exposed white dwarfs, we used our observations of WZ Sge (V=15.5, T_wd=15, 000K) and AL Com (V=20.5, T_wd=20, 000K) as input files to the ETC for STIS. For a S/N of 10, the exposure times for a range of magnitudes with the higher resolutions needed for the best determination of rotation velocity (0.1- 0.5Angstrom with E140M grating binned by 4-20; aperture of 0.2X0.2) and for lower resolutions (1.2Angstrom) needed to reach the faintest objects at 19th-20th mag yet still provide a measure of rotation velocity (G140L with aperture of 52x0.2) are summarized in Table 2 below. After overheads for setup and readout, there are ~28 min of exposure available in the first orbit and additions of 41 min in subsequent orbits. Scaling the average of the times in Table 2 for each object's V magnitude resulted in the number of orbits listed in Table 1 for each object. EK TrA is well within the CVZ so its orbit time is half that of the comparable m agnitude system SW UMa. The 2 sys t ems brighter than 16th mag would have less binning (resolutions of 0.1-0.2Angstrom), the majority would have binning by 20 (resolution of 0.5Angstrom) and the 5 objects fainter than 18.5 would be observed with the lower resolution G140L grating. For the brighter objects with short orbital periods, the exposures would be broken down to repeated ACCUMs that would preserve 0.1 phase resolution so that dynamical white dwarf masses could be obtained if the quadrature phases are covered.
