Barlow University College London N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract NGC 7009 has become the standard-bearer for a growing body of work that finds nebular abundances derived from recombination lines are up to factors of 5--15 larger than those obtained from the optical/UV collisionally excited lines. These can be forced into agreement at the higher value if large unexplained temperature fluctuations (t^2) exist. STIS long-slit observations will allow us to study the line-of-sight t^2 in addition to plane-of-the-sky variations, within the slit areas, thereby creating 3-dimensional t^2 information. Using a method we developed and recently applied to our Orion Nebula HST data, we will find t^2 in the O^++ and N^+ regions using the highly T_e-sensitive O III] 1663 and N II] 2142 lines; this provides information on how t^2 depends on level of ionization or excitation of the gas. We propose to complement the long-slit STIS spectra with WFPC2 images in several filters, most importantly in the 4364 A and 5008 A lines of O III, whose ratio can be used to diagnose T_e-fluctuations over the whole nebula on the microscopic scale (0.1''). We have ISO IR spectroscopy of NGC 7009 to help further characterize electron densities and T_e macroscopically. Our goals are to understand the conditions within the nebula and the physical origin of the inferred t^2 and to find a prescription for determining reliable nebular abundances -- fundamental to understanding the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8114( 12) - 05/18/00 17:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Throughout this proposal we use lambda_vac, which may cause familiar lines to appear strange. STIS Long-slit Spectra---------------------- We will use HST's spatial resolution (2-pixel spatial resolution along the slit is 0.10'' for the CCD and 0.058'' for the MAMA) to map changes in conditions across the nebula. Our slit positions are as close to the major axis as possible, given the restriction of having sufficient guide stars, and are chosen to include the FLIERs (fast low-ionization emission regions). The CCD lines will be acquired along the 52'' slit; the MAMA detectors see only 28''. Because the central star (CS) in NGC 7009 is reasonably bright (V = 12.78, B = 12.66), it could cause problems (bleeding, saturation, etc.), especially on long exposures, if it were in our science slit. On the other hand, the CS provides an excellent fiducial point in the nebula, where we may assess the positional registration of emission lines in our various exposures with STIS/CCD, MAMA/NUV, and MAMA/FUV G140M. Thus, we plan to move the CS off the upper edge of our 52"x0.5"slits. We define our slits such that the CS is moved 0.1" OFF in the dispersion direction (~N). According to the measured PSF of the CS in the PC F555W images (8 sec exposure) used to derive its position (see RPS2 comments on target 1), the exposure counts are ~10% of its central peak value beyond two pixel (0.091") distance. Hence moving the CS 0.1" OFF the edge should provide some stellar continuum creeping into the slit at the few percent level to allow it to be used as a reference. ** Please check that the above PSF is also appropriate for our present STIS CCD and MAMA exposures, which are much longer times. ** All spectra are to be taken with an 0.5'' slit width--- dictated by the need to do the crucial MAMA (1666, 2142 A) and other weak lines with adequate S/N in a reasonable time, and the fundamental need to have cospatial data for all other lines. A few additional spectra with 0.2'' slit width will provide better spectral resolution (1.12 and 0.61 A FWHM) to separate respectively [O II] 3727.09, 29.88 and C III] 1906.68, 08.73. The flux ratio in each line pair is used to assess N_e for the O^+ and C^++ zone. These serve as useful indicators for other "low" and "high" ionization species. After the corresponding 0.5'' slit-width observation, we add those with 0.2'' -- [O II] in slit 1 (as slit1up & slit1dn), C III] in slit 2 (as slit2up & slit2dn) only. For each we first move 0.1'' (UP from center of 0.5" slit, which is ~N) (+X-direction) in dispersion direction and do 0.2" slit width exposure. Then we move 0.1" DOWN from center of 0.5" slit, (which is ~S) (-X-direction) in dispersion direction and do another 0.2" slit width exposure. This matches 80% of the area of the corresponding 0.5" slit width exposure. Slits are all parallel to the 52''x0.5'' pattern. We do this with 4 exposures for CR removal. ALL Slits have same ORIENT, which saves much OH. Taking spectra for slits 2 and 3 before changing the grating wheel saves time. STIS Observing Program - We have taken care with the flux estimates by utilizing our present NGC 7009 ground-based spectroscopy and Balick et al. (1998) WFPC2 emission line fluxes. Using our photoionization models, we have made numerical simulations to predict fluxes for other lines of interest. For the N II] 2143 line (the brighter component), we scale our HST/FOS Orion SB(2142), comparing SB(6585) with that image of NGC 7009 from Balick et al. (1998). The SB(6585) is a factor of 1.6 lower in 7009, but the SB(2143) per A is predicted to be 6.26E-15 erg/(cm^2 s Angstrom (square)''), a factor of 1.2 higher because 7009 suffers much less extinction than Orion. For a S/N = 3/pixel, STIS/ETC finds 2520 s. Our scripted integration time is 2384 s, yielding S/N = 2.9/pixel. We plan to use G140M, G230M, G430M, and G750M with various tilts to cover the necessary lines (see proposal (many other detectable lines in the bands are not listed). The western semi-major axis has generally higher emission-line SB than the eastern; this is particularly dramatic for[N II] 6585 in the FLIERs. Because the pivotal N II] 2143 line is expected to be one of our fainter lines, it makes sense to concentrate all the time on this (MAMA) line (28'' slit length) near the W semi -major axis. This means that the bandpasses including the required [N II] 5756, 6585 lines as well as those with other science-linked lines, N III] 1747-54 and [O II] 2471, need only be done there. A curtailed set of just two MAMA bands in Slit 3 (together with CCD 52'' data already available per above) will provide the science enabled by O III] 1666 (the O^++ ``trio method") and C III] 1907, 1909 (C^++ abundance and N_e). These collisional abundances will be compared to O^++, C^++ inferred from the O II 4650 and C II 4268 recombination lines. The line grouping is for slit 1 all CCDs, slit 2 all MAMAs, and slit 3 two MAMA bandpasses G140M -- 1638-1692 for O III] and G230M -- 1839-1929 for C III]. Sample Calculation -- Using IUE measurements of O III] (1661, 66 A) (Barker 1983), we find SB(1666 A) = 2.03E-14 erg/(cm^2 s (square)''), where we have partitioned the flux by the known theoretical ratio since we will resolve 1661, 1666. The resolution for G140M is 0.85 A (product of dispersion of 0.05 A per pixel and 17 pixels in dispersion direction - per ETC). SB/Angstrom is 2.39E-14 erg/(cm^2 s Angstrom (square)''). For S/N = 3/pixel for this line, ETC yields 1735 s. For our total exposure with slit 1 of 2148 s, S/N = 3.3/pixel. For our faintest lines, such as O III] (1661, 66) and N II] (2140, 43), we intend to build up S/N by binning along the slit to 0.5'' elements that match the slit width, increasing S/N by a factor of ~3 relative to the per pixel values output by ETC. Our STIS program has three visits. The PN central star (V = 12.78, B = 12.66) is used for point source acquisition. No target peakup is required. WFPC2 Images------------ We use a single field center to take images with several narrow-band filters that cover emission lines of interest. Individual filters are listed as well as the dominant line they are designed to cover. Imagery in one continuum band, F547M, is taken as this is crucial in order to take out the continuum contribution to the all-important [O III] 4364 A line being imaged by the F437N filter. It is imperative in order that we may accomplish the chief scientific objective of getting T_e from F(4364)/F(5008) ratio maps. We use S(H Beta) = 7.0E-13 erg/(cm^2 s (square)") (Acker et al.\ 1989). Exposure times are based on existing imagery (Balick et al. GO 6117), our own long-slit spectra, and Hyung & Aller (1995a, b); the WFPC2/ETC is used. F437N [O III] 4364 -- This is a very important diagnostic line. As such, we plan the longest total exposure of 2200 s, that will provide S/N ~ 13 per WF3 pixel. We split this into 3 iterations for better removal of CRs. For all other filters, just 2 exposures are needed. F487N H Beta 4863 A - S/N ~ 43/pixel is reached in 520 s. F502N [O III] 5008 A - S/N ~ 100 per pixel is reached in 320 s. F547M continuum - We chose an exposure time of 240 s, which should provide better S/N than in the narrow filters and allow an accurate subtraction of the continuum. F656N H Alpha 6565 - A S/N ~ 100 per pixel is reached in 400 s. Real Time Justification ----------------------- For the STIS visits, we use ORIENT in order to have the desired slit alignment, position angle = 86.72 degrees. The aperture OFFSET = 45.38D per Table for 52x0.5 slit (by far most of our STIS spectra) ---> ORIENT 132.1D. Because the O III] 1666 A line is very important for the goals of this program, it is highly desirable to have the same slit coverage as for the other emission lines. Because the G140M spectrum will be projected 3 arcsec BELOW the repeller wire and thus asymmetric with respect to our other slit fields (Cycle 8, phase II update, pp. 8-9), we seek to "recover" 3 arcsec Y-axis shift (along the slit length) for the case of SLIT3. We do this by defining a fixed target number 10 (NGC7009-SLIT3SH); this is used only for the G140M exposures. ** Please check that we have adjusted the positions in the correct direction relative to NGC7009-SLIT3. ** We retain fixed target number 9, (NGC7009-SLIT2SH) but do NOT do a shift now with the revised program. Fixed target number 9 has the same center as fixed target number 3. To the extent possible, this program will benefit from knowing ahead of time what the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting (STIS HB, vers. 2.0, p. 115) will be. We can then quickly adjust our slit definitions to compensate for changes. It is VERY IMPORTANT that we try to keep proper registration of slits on NGC 7009 and between our MAMA and CCD exposures. It is also important to insure that the two fiducial bars do not cover parts of the nebula that are of particular interest to this study. Thus our program would benefit by having NO change in the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting between Visits 1 and 2. With SCHED = 70%, in 1999, our scheduling window is 2.5 days, 16-19 August, 1999. Hopefully, in the normal scheduling of HST, NO change in the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting would be due to occur during that time. We will provide our PC and CS with a drawing of the layout of the Slits with respect to NGC 7009. This has carefully considered where there is emission that we wish to measure and the position of the fiducial bars and repeller-wire shift.
