Abstract We will use STIS to obtain the first unambigous detection of acoustic oscillations in a solar-type star other than the Sun. Numerous ground-based asteroseismology experiments have failed to produce a definitive signal partly because scintillation in the Earth's atmosphere limits photometric precision. From its vantage point in space, HST can reliably measure mode frequencies and dominant splittings with an accuracy of 3 MuHz in only 15 CVZ orbits. We will monitor brightness variations in a sequence of 3000+ exposures over a 24 hour period. Using the G430L grating to disperse the light over 2000 CCD pixels, a precision of 10^-4 will be achieved in each 5+20 second exposure. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations based on full-disk solar observations indicate that we will detect (>99% about a dozen distinct frequencies (0<=l<=2). These frequency measurements will enable us to determine stellar mass, age, and helium abundance, while refining existing measurements of other parameters. Hipparcos parallaxes coupled with a detailed spectroscopic analysis will overconstrain stellar models, allowing a test of the underlying physics (the onset of core convection, for example). This study will herald a new era of practical asteroseismology, and serve as a benchmark for future space missions dedicated to stellar seismology. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8115( 12) - 04/15/99 12:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We used the Web-based exposure time calculator (ETC) to estimate magnitude limits for obtaining 100, 000 electrons per pixel (safely below the GAIN=4 full -well limit) in a 2 second exposure. The G750L grating probes to the faintest limits, but a broad PSF halo and temperature dependent fringes compromise photometric precision. Thus, we will use the G430L grating. With any large STIS aperture, a 2 second exposure of a point source (Kurucz model) yields a limiting magnitude of V=4.4 for spectral types F5V-G5V (ETC 28562, 28417, 28535, 28620). The limit is V=5.4 for a 5 second exposure (Figure 1). The actual exposure time will be tuned for each potential target to yield 100, 000 electrons per pixel. According to the ETC, the corresponding sum of all spectrum pixels would contain 2*10^8 \elec\ for F and G stars. With such short exposure times, instrument overhead dominates observing efficiency. Accordingly, we will only readout the smallest available subarray (32 rows) at a cost of 20 seconds per read. Subarrays also conserve STIS buffer space, reducing the number of required dumps. The peak expected signal is about 15 ppm (Table 2), so a sensitivity of at least 3 ppm is required for a 5 Sigma detection of a single mode. Monte Carlo experiments indicate that approximately 10^12 \elec\ must be obtained to reliably measure amplitudes and frequencies for several modes. At 2*10^8 \elec\ per exposure, this requires 5000 exposures (24 contiguous CVZ orbits). To improve the likelihood of being scheduled, we have compromised by requesting only 15 contiguous CVZ orbits. This allows for two SAA-free blocks separated by several orbits with ~25 minute gaps due to SAA passages. These gaps are a small enough fraction of the total time that sidelobes are not a problem. Total duration of the observing sequence also sets the frequency resolution that is obtained. A 15 orbit sequence achieves 12 MuHz resolution, which is just enough to cleanly separate modes with predicted separations of 28 MuHz (Figure 3). \medskip We wrote a mini-scheduler to simulate the expected sequence of target and calibration exposures, overhead, and SAA interruptions. For a worst case scenario with 5 second exposures, we expect to get 3130 target exposures in 15 CVZ orbits. This includes time for 3 peakups, 36 wavecals, and 16 buffer dumps. We will be using the 2" * 2" aperture to improve photometric accuracy, so peakups are probably unnecessary. Similarly, repeated wavecals are not needed because we will reconstruct the relative location of each spectrum by cross-correlation along each axis. Nonetheless, we used the default wavecal and peakup requirements to determine the worst case schedule of observations for use in the feasibility assessments presented in Figures 3 and 4. In Table 2, we provide 5 (scientifically equivalent) targets to facilitate CVZ scheduling, which can be challenging. For proposal accounting purposes, we have selected HD 22001 (Kappa Ret, a member of the Hyades moving group) as our primary target and allocated zero orbits to the other stars, but we will accept any star that can be scheduled. The remaining stars would then be removed from the long range plan. The importance of nearly continuous time coverage in stellar seismology has been demonstrated repeatedly in analyses of ground-based solar and stellar data. Orbital gaps in a non-CVZ observation would be much worse than diurnal gaps from the ground because the orbital period is closer to characteristic mode and beat periods. Our need for CVZ scheduling should be distinguished from cases where CVZ merely enhances observing efficiency. None of the supporting observations for this program affect HST scheduling. As described in the Scientific Justification, we will also obtain and analyze high resolution optical spectra. Useful Hipparcos measurements already exist for all targets.
