Abstract Our recent finding of a flat IMF below 3 M_\odot in the LMC cluster R136 raises a pressing question: is the IMF universal at low masses? We propose to address the issue by taking deep WFPC2 images of eleven young, rich clusters in the LMC/SMC, at different conditions of star density, metallicity and age. We will investigate the low end of the IMF (5 - 0.5 M_\odot) with the objective of exploring how the local conditions may impact the IMF at low masses. By restricting the sample to the LMC/SMC, uncertainties due to distances, reddening corrections, and field star contamination are eliminated or largely reduced. Such effects are a major source of uncertainty in IMF determinations of young Galactic clusters and associations. Only HST can provide the resolution and limiting magnitude required to reach the low-mass end of the IMF at extragalactic distances. With such a systematic study we will be able to remove all the uncertainties related to different reduction and ana ly sis methods, perform a useful comparison of the results, and explore the parameter space of the physical conditions and their impact on the IMF. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8134( 7) - 03/16/00 09:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observation Strategy, Limiting Magnitude and Exposure Times, We will derive the CMDs for these young clusters from the two bandpasses F555W (V) and F814W (I) . These filters have been selected to optimize the detection of the pre-main sequence stars, down to 0.5 M_\odot. We will center the central region of each cluster on the PC chip in order to take advantage of the PC spatial sampling (0.''045/pixel). We will use the large field of the three flanking WF chips to study the external regions required to correct the luminosity function and the IMF for foreground objects. In the special case of LH52, which has an extension of 4.'5 * 4.'5, we will observe the cluster with the three WF chips in two visits at different orientations on the sky, to achieve good spatial coverage. Our scientific objective is to determine the low end of the IMF for these young clusters down to a mass limit of 0.5 M_\odot. For a star of spectral type G, which is a good match to the colors o f our observed R136 pre-main sequence stars, such limit corresponds to V = 25 and I = 24.5 respectively (Shaerer et al. 1983). We have used the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) to estimate that we can reach such a limit for a G5 star with magnitude V = 25 in a total exposure time of 1400 s, with a S/N of 18 in the F555W filter and 14 in the F814W respectively. Each 1400 s observation comprises a dithered pair of CRSPLIT 700 second exposures, to remove the cosmic rays. As it can be seen from Figure 2, the selected clusters are rich in bright stars: this is a concern, since obtaining deep exposures necessarily implies saturation in the brightest objects, and therefore loss of useful spatial information. In a 350s exposure, stars of magnitudes 18 and 18.5 in the F555W and F814W filters, respectively, will start to saturate. We estimate, for the clusters which have been studied by Elson et al., that ~ 7 stars will have magnitudes in the range V = 13.5- 14.5, whi le ~ 15 stars will be in the range 14.5-15.5. Blooming, therefore, will have a minor impact on the observations, with less than 0.1\ completeness tests will take in account the problem of a reduced effective area. Since we are also interested to gain photometric information on the brightest stars, as well as the faintest, we will include short (~eq 10 s) exposures in both bandpasses. , The Photometric Accuracy , Two recent reports issued by the WFPC2 team at STScI (WFPC2 ISR 97-08 and WFPC2 TIR 98-01), describe the impact of increasing Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE) in WFPC2, especially at low signal levels. High CTE makes an object imaged at high WFPC2 CCD row numbers appear fainter than it would appear if imaged at low row numbers. The WFPC2 CTE signal loss is more significant for faint stars with low background and is increasing with time. In our proposed science observations, the sky background should help to mitigate the effect of CTE loss (see ISR 97-08). In addition, recipes for correcting signal loss have been publ is hed by STScI which now account for the time dependence of the problem, achieving accuracies of ~4\ one cluster (NGC2214) we plan to repeat the observations with the FOV rotated by 180^o with respect of the previous visit. This will allow us to calibrate the effectiveness of the correction procedure and permit investigation of any sytematic calibration effects., Summary, We have used RPS2 to optimize the exposure sequences. All our targets are located in the CVZ. For each target we will include in one CVZ orbit 2*700s CRSPLIT exposures, and two shorter exposures, 2*10s. As already mentioned, we plan to observe LH52 in two visits, which will take one CVZ orbit each. In addition, the target selected for the CTE calibration (NGC2214) will be observed at an orientation of 180^o with respect to the first observation, and this adds one non CVZ orbit to the proposal, which requires in total 13 CVZ orbits and 1 regular orbit.
