Abstract We unexpectedly discovered evidence, based upon two GHRS G160M spectra, of greatly elevated abundances of odd-numbered nuclei Phosphorus and Aluminum as well as a Nitrogen to Carbon ratio of 10 in the photosphere of the white dwarf in the dwarf nova VW Hy ons and determine the first chem ical abundances of many odd-numbered proton capture species; (2) determine a accurate mass for the white dwarf and; (3) probe changes in the accretion belt and surface abundances as a function of time since a superoutburst. This study will hold important ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8139( 14) - 11/21/01 10:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To achieve our scientific goals, we request two sets of observations: (a) Orbital phase-resolved (P_ orb=107 min) E140M spectra during two consecutive CVZ orbits, corresponding to 192 min, which will be used to determine the mass of the white dwarf in VW he orbital period, with a resolu tion of ~32 km/s. These data will be sufficient to obtain a radial velocity curve of the white dwarf from the numerous narrow metal absorption lines. In addition, the full 150 min worth of data, corrected for the WD motion, will be summed up to obtain a h Thus, each orbit will result in a S/N~10 spectrum at the full resolution. These will be entirely sufficient to derive the v\sin i and the chemical abundances. This broad wavelength interval or the E140M grating encompasses over 40 strong transitions of odd-numbered nuclear species of N Real Time Justification ----------------------- The first set (a) of two orbits has to be scheduled in the CVZ to achieve full binary orbital phase coverage. The second set of 5 orbits has to be scheduled as a time-critical set to determine the time dependence of v sin(i), accretion belt properties a possible, even though the first spectrum may still be disc- dominated, in order to get information on the WD parameters just after the end of the superoutburst. The second spectrum, after 17d, almost certainly will reveal the exposed white dwarf. The consecutive spectra are spaced to acc Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- PC: To protect the MAMA from damage due to an overly bright source, safeguards have been put in place to observe blank sky in the case of a superoutburst too close to the observations in visit 02 to 06. The coordinates supplied for VW- HYI are actually 10" south of the target itself. A USE OFFSET command has been placed on each visit such that if outburst is detected sufficiently in advance of the observation and bright object concerns can be laid to rest, an offset of 10" north in Dec will be uplinked to the telescope. OPUS will be notified that such an offset should be made. If outburst has not occurred as expected by ~1 week before observation, the offset will remain at 0 and observations will be of a safe blank sky. Currently, outburst is expected to occur in early May with observations beginning May20-21, 2000. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Paper Products: YES Media: ELECTRONIC Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8139( 14) - 11/21/01 10:52 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 VW-HYI STAR, DWARF NOVA, RA=04H 9M 11.300S +/- 0.15S, 2000.0 V = 13.6+/-0.1 INTERACTING BINARY DEC=-71D 17' 51.2" +/- 0.2", B-V = +0.0+/-0.1 PLATE-ID=0186 E(B-V) = 0.0+/-0.1 F-CONT(1400)=8.0+/-1e-14 Coordinate Source: Comments: These coordinates are offset from the target by 10".
