Abstract We propose to use two orthogonal orientations of the STIS spectrograph slit to verify the orientation of the bipolar outflow in the interacting binary system Beta Lyrae (HD174638), and to investigate the extent of the outflow in four spectral regions of interest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8142( 6) - 06/20/00 14:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain imaging spectroscopy of Beta Lyrae with the STIS 52x0.5" slit oriented at or near a PA of 164 degrees during one orbit and at or near 74 degrees during another. These PA values have been obtained from polarimetric data indicating the orientation of the scattering planes within the binary system. When the slit is oriented close to the position angle of the outflow on the sky, we expect to see emission offset from that of the stellar continuum. We will use the G750M grating at the Lambda6768 and Lambda5734 prime grating tilts to search for outflow emission in the H-alpha and HeI Lambda5876 lines, and the G230MB grating at the Lambda2135 prime tilt to investigate VUV emission. We will also use the G430L grating to obtain information about the extent of the continuum emission above and below the Balmer jump. Since we do not know the spatial extent of the outflow, we must divide our observations into two components, sensitive to two different size scales. To probe the region near the star (on the order of a few hundred times the size of the binary system), we need to make sure the bright stellar region does not saturate the CCD, so that we will be able to remove the stellar PSF. Then a comparison of the widths of the stellar spectrum and the outflow spectrum (if seen) will yield an estimate of the size scale of the outflow. To do this, we will set the CCD gain to 4 and take four 2-second exposures at each of the two visible-region grating tilts, and four 10-second exposures at each of the short -wavelength grating tilts. The target will be stepped along the slit by 1/2 pixel after the second exposure in each set of four. To test whether the outflow is larger in extent, on the order of a few thousands of times the system size, we need to be sensitive to faint emission at larger spatial scales. In this case, where we are not specifically concerned with the continuum spectrum of the bright target, we are free to allow it to saturate, a nd therefore we also plan one longer (1 to 3 minutes) exposure at each grating configuration. The two orbits will consist of identical exposure sequences; the only difference between the two will be the slit orientation. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We require special scheduling only insofar as this is necessary in order to orient the spectrograph slit at the requested PAs. We expect the orbital phase of the binary to be irrelevant to observations of the outflow. We have no plans for supporting observations that would affect scheduling.
