Abstract We propose a UV spectroscopic snapshot survey of AGN scheduled to be observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The FUSE GTO program includes all AGN with known far- UV fluxes in excess of 1.5 * 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 A^-1 over the 900 --1200 A wavelength range. Of these, 88 are low-redshift AGN with z < 0.3. Contemporaneous STIS/MAMA observations using gratings G140L and G230L will give complete coverage of all UV resonance absorption and emission lines from the Lyman limit to Mg II. A 31-minute snapshot with exposures divided between G140L and G230L will yield spectra with a minimum S/N of 15 per resolution element at all wavelengths for all these targets. In addition to the emission line measurements, we will be sensitive to intrinsic absorption lines to a limiting equivalent width of 0.3 A at the 3-sigma level. Finally, in combination with the FUSE spectra, we will measure the continuum shape across the peak of the ``big blue bump", permitting us to see if the 1000 Angstrom\ break found in the HST composite quasar spectrum by Zheng et al. is present in the lowest redshift AGN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8144( 4) - 03/05/99 09:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All of our selected 88 targets have UV continuum flux levels exceeding 1.5 * 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 A^-1, at 1200 A. To minimize target acquisition overheads we will use STIS in slitless mode. A guide star acquisition will assure good imaging and hence full spectral resolution on these point sources. Allowing 15 m for MAMA science observing, our snapshots total ~35 m, as indicated by RPS2, near the center of the distribution for snapshots having a high rate of scheduling and execution. At a continuum flux level of 1.5 * 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 A^-1, the STIS Exposure Time Calculator shows that 600 s in G140L with the FUV-MAMA gives over 500 counts per resolution element at 1200 A, decreasing to about 120 per element at 1700 Angstrom. 300 s with G230L and the NUV-MAMA gives comparable counts at 1700 A and peaks at over 700 counts at 2700 A. With the resulting minimum S/N of > 15 per resolution element over the full wavelength range from 1200 to 3200 A, we are sensitive to absorption lines with EW > 0.3 A at a confidence level of 3 sigma. All of our targets will be observed in the FUSE GTO AGN snapshot program, beginning in the spring/summer of 1999, the same as the start of Cycle 8. Coordination will be achieved by waiting until a snapshot is scheduled in an HST SMS. FUSE planning can modify schedules to achieve contemporaneous observations with less than 1-week notice, so the typical advance warning available from HST is plenty of time. We will also obtain contemporaneous ground-based optical spectra of the sample at KPNO, CTIO, and the ARC 3.5m telescope.
