Abstract We propose to use the unparalleled resolution of the WFPC2 Planetary Camera to search for close binaries amongst the sample of 37 low-temperature L dwarfs, identified primarily in the course of the DENIS and 2MASS near-infrared surveys. Our goals are twofold: first, statistical analysis to estimate the binary fraction amongst these very low mass objects; second, identification of individual binary systems suitable for long- term monitoring to determine astrometric orbits, and hence masses. Comparison with theoretical models indicates that the L-dwarfs in our sample have temperatures of ~ 1500 < T_eff < 2300K and luminosities of 12 < M_bol < 15, implying in most cases distances between 20 and 60 parsecs. Given those distances, and a binary fraction and semi-major axis distribution comparable with that amongst late-type M-dwarfs, our previous HST observations indicate that between 15 and 20\ spatially. These HST observations will be supplemented by near-infrared ground-based radial-velocity measurements and deeper, but lower resolution, imaging. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8146( 3) - 08/11/99 17:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain PC observations of a sample of 37 field L-dwarfs. We will use the F814W and F606W filters for these observations, with the latter aimed primarily at eliminating background-source contamination: even background M- dwarfs are bluer than L-dwarfs. All of the L-dwarf targets should be detected in the F606W observations, but any bona-fide lower-luminosity companions will probably be visible only in the F814W exposures. Most of our targets have F814W_AB$ magnitudes, determined directly from our spectra, between 17.5 and 20, with a few brighter sources. At these magnitudes, exposure times between 60 and 600 seconds are sufficient to give peak fluxes between 20\ we will adopt a standard 100-second exposure in the F606W filter. The latter gives ~10\ the vast majority of background sources. Whenever possible, we will aim to obtain two F814W images and a single F606W image of each target. Experience has shown that duplicated exposures provide reliable cosmic-ray identification and elimination, while the R-band exposure is aimed solely at discriminating against neutral-coloured background sources. Given the relatively short time on target, these observations are best undertaken as part of a snapshot programme. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have obtained spectroscopy of all of the targets using LRIS on the Keck II telescope. In addition, Koerner and Kirkpatrick have been pursuing a programme of near-infrared imaging of a subset of the sources. That programme, also aimed at detecting low-mass companions, complements the present proposal in that it has lower spatial resolution (typically 0.5 arcseconds, versus 0.1 arcseconds with PC) but is capable of detecting lower-luminosity planetary-mass companions at wide separations. Finally, we are initiating a programme of near-infrared radial velocity monitoring to search for spectroscopic binaries. We are applying for time with CGS4 on UKIRT for this programme (time has been allocated for near-IR spectral classification observations in December 1998).
