Abstract We propose to perform high spatial resolution and moderate spectral resolution 5500Angstrom \ \ to 10000Angstrom \ STIS long-slit imaging spectroscopy of Mars, in order to identify and globally map the planet's iron-bearing surface mineralogy. STIS measurements would be obtained by push-broom scanning the 0.2 " slit entirely across the planet during each of four separate "visits" spaced ~6 hours apart over the course of a single Martian day. These hyperspectral STIS image cubes will be complemented by near-simultaneous WFPC2 UV-VIS imaging that will allow us to quantify the effects of water ice clouds or other aerosols on our STIS spectra. These data will be used to search for and globally map spectral signatures of climatically-diagnostic ferric and ferrous minerals at a spatial scale comparable to existing spacecraft orbital spectroscopy data (~20 km/pixel) and in a wavelength region not well spectrally-sampled by existing or planned Mars spacecraft instrumentation. A secondary objective of these observations is to provide unique new scientific and calibration measurements in support of four NASA Mars exploration missions. We require these observations to be scheduled near 0degrees phase angle at opposition (24 April 1999) in order to study this poorly explored part of the Martian phase curve and to maximize the spatial resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8152( 25) - 03/22/99 16:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our proposed observations would occur as four distinct "sets" of combined STIS/WFPC2 observations within one ~24 hour period. Each set is defined as two orbits that consist of STIS CCD G750L spectra of Mars arranged to span the planet from limb to limb, and one orbit that consists of ten short WFPC2 exposures of Mars using discrete filters and the LRFs. STIS: Grating: G750L (525-1140), Detector: CCD, Slit: 52*0.2 (spatial resolution: 20*80 km on Mars), exposure time: 0.8 sec, ~40 aperture positions/orbit, Readout: CR-split=2, SIZEAXIS2=480. Feasibility of exposure time, subframing technique, pointing strategy, and scanning were demonstrated by our STIS-UV and STIS-VIS observations conducted in Cycle 7 as part of program 7276 19, 20. Because Mars will be more than twice the apparent angular diameter in April 1999, however, it will require two orbits instead of one to uniformly pushbroom-scan the STIS slit completely across the planet (Figure 2). beginfigure ht to3.6inrule0pt3.6in specialpsfile=figure2.ps angle=0 hoffset=-62 voffset=-270 vscale=100 hscale=100 endfigure WFPC2: Eight narrow or medium PC filters, two LRF PC wavelengths, variable exposure times. Spatial resolution: 19 km/pixel on Mars. Feasibility demonstrated by success of numerous previous Mars WFPC2 imaging programs by our group ( e.g., programs 5493, 5832, 6741, 7276, 7792). Observation strategy would be identical to that used in, for example, program 7276. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have requested four sets of observations, each consisting of three orbits, within one specific ~24 hour period very close to opposition on 24 April 1999. Each set should consist of two orbits of STIS observations to scan entirely across the planet, followed (or preceded) immediately by one orbit of supporting WFPC2 imaging. We require ~90degrees Martian longitude spacing between the sets of observations so that STIS spectra of all surface regions can be obtained at two emission angles: 0degrees-45degrees, and 45degrees- 90degrees. In order to obtain the required ~90degrees spacing of Martian longitudes, the start of each set should be separated by ~6 hours, or four orbits ( i.e. start set 1 on orbit n, set 2 on n+4, set 3 on n+8, set 4 on n+12), so that they are evenly distributed around the planet. We ARE NOT placing any requirements on the exact starting time or Martian longitude of starting orbit n (as we have sometimes done in previous Mars observing requests), but are only requesting that the four sets of observations be centered as close as possible on the actual time of opposition (18:00 UT on 24 April 1999, minimum phase: 0.8degrees). Past experience (the PI was a Co- I on programs 6852 and 6741) indicates that it is possible to schedule such ~90degrees spaced observations, and that if necessary it is acceptable to acquire short exposures within the less intense parts of the SAA. Please note: Special approval has been given by the STScI Director's Office (M.G. Hauser) to submit this proposal for Cycle 8, despite the fact that the observations are to be taken before the nominal start of the cycle. Given this special exemption and the challenging nature and timing of the proposed observations, we realize that we may need to be flexible in the face of sometimes unpredictable scheduling realities. If this program is approved, we would work rapidly with STScI support personnel to develop the best possible Phase II observation plan, and would waive any proprietary data period in order to make the data immediately accessible via the WWW to mission scientists and the public. \ \ \ \ \ \ NASA Mission Operations/Data Analysis Support Our proposed STIS observations will provide a significant enhancement to the multispectral imaging studies performed in 1997 by the Mars Pathfinder (MPF) mission 21. High spectral resolution STIS observations of the MPF site and surrounding geologic units will help mission scientists (the PI is a member of the MPF science team) to identify the still-debated geologic classification of the landing site itself, and thus to place the MPF data into a broader regional context. Similarly, these observations will also support the calibration and interpretation of 1999 Mars Polar Lander data, as regional spectroscopic observations of high southern latitude terrains near the planned landing site will be obtained as part of our proposed HST measurements. Our proposed WFPC2 and STIS measurements will also provide important and complementary imaging data obtained simultaneous with MGS Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) imaging from Martian orbit 22. The MOC Wide Angle camera has only two channels, red and blue. The imaging bandpasses are broad, UV imaging in particular is not included, and there is no diurnal coverage. These HST data will provide synoptic context for MOC images, as well as an important cross-check and validation of the calibration of MOC data, as the MOC did not undergo an exhaustive calibration before launch and it does not carry any in-flight calibration targets to monitor the drift of the responsivity due to radiation damage or contamination of the optics. Our knowledge of the data, plans, and limitations of MOC data is extensive, as two Co-Is (James, Clancy) are members of MGS instrument science teams, and one Co-I (Ravine) is directly involved with the operation and calibration of the MOC. Similarly, these WFPC2 and STIS measurements will substantially aid the calibration and interpretation of multispectral imaging data to be obtained by the 1999 Mars Climate Orbiter (MCO) Mars Color Imager (MARCI) instrument. Like MGS, MCO will be in a low polar orbit, unable to obtain the synoptic view of atmospheric phenomena possible from HST. And like MOC, MARCI does not carry any on-board calibration target, so independent verification of the calibration and monitoring of the calibration drift based on HST observations is highly desired. Use of these proposed data in support of MARCI measurements will be extensive, as all of the members of this proposal team are either members or associates of the MARCI science team. As much advance knowledge as possible on the timing of the HST observations is desired in order to properly sequence the spacecraft observations.
