Abstract We will probe the gaseous environments of low mass pre-main sequence stars by studying the H_2 UV Lyman bands. We have detected fluorescent H_2 Lyman band emission, pumped by H I Lyman Alpha and Si IV, in 8 classical T Tauri stars but not in 3 naked T Tauri stars. The former all show evidence for dusty circumstellar disks; the latter show no evidence for dust disks. In T Tau the H_2 emission is extended, but a large fraction of the total emission arises within 15 AU of the star. We propose 2 investigations: 1. Where is source of the fluoresced H_2 in the T Tauri stars? High dispersion spectra will yield the line profiles and velocities. Gas in inner disks should evidence orbital motions. At low dispersion, using a long slit, we can map the large-scale spatial distribution of the molecular gas. 2. What is the gas disk survival timescale? Do those PMS stars which show evidence of inner holes in their dust disks have evidence of gas disks? Do the gas and dust disks dissipate at the same time? The answers will have implications for theories of disk clearing and planetary formation, and will provide insights into the spatial distribution of gas near classical T Tauri stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8157( 4) - 10/29/99 13:15 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our proposed studies have somewhat different observational requirements, but they are all related by the need to detect the H_2 Lyman bands between 1150 and 1700 Angstroms. This requires use of the STIS FUV MAMA. We will observe 4 cTTS and 3 nTTS/wTTS. The number of targets ensures that we will obtain representative results, because all PMS stars (especially the cTTS) vary. THE GAS DISK SURVIVAL TIMESCALE. We will obtain deep E140M spectra of 3 nTTS. V410 Tau appears to have no dust disk, and is nearly pole-on. Line widths are narrow, which will maximize detectability of weak H_2 lines. The other 2 stars, V819 Tau and V836 Tau, all have inner disk holes. All have H-alpha in emission, and appear to be intermediate between the cTTS and the nTTS. Extinctions are small. The primary requirement here is to reach the lowest practical limits. In this regime the background is dominated by dark noise. In a 4 orbit E140M exposure (about 9, 900 seconds), we reach a limiting sensitivity for a narrow line of about 6.E-16 erg/s/cm^2 (i.e., we can detect such a line at 3 sigma confidence.) This limiting sensitivity corresponds to a surface flux at the star of order 3000 erg/s/cm^2 for A_V=0, or 50, 000 for A_V=1. These fluxes are 1-2 orders of magnitude above those expected from photospheric starspots, and 1 -2 orders of magnitude below the fluxes detected from the cTTS. The echelle gratings offer the best tradeoff between resolution, sensitivity, and wavelength coverage. The Lyman lines fall between 1100 and 1700 Angstroms. The first order medium resolution gratings can cover only a few of the H_2 lines at any one setting. The high resolution of the echelle offers a better opportunity to identify weak molecular lines, especially in the cTTS, because of the enormous confusion arising from weak atomic as well as molecular lines. In addition, the background is lower in the echelle modes because of a narrower PSF (lower dark current), and because the sky + stellar continuum background per pixel is significantly lower. We will observe through the 0.2*0.06 arcsec slit to limit contamination from any possible extended gas. THE NATURE OF THE FLUORESCED GAS. We will obtain deep E140M spectra of 4 cTTS. The low resolution spectra of T Tau from the GHRS show the extent of line confusion and the reason why we need high resolution. We have medium resolution GHRS spectra of selected lines of the other targets, and know their H_2 fluxes (though, with the exception of T Tau, the exposures are short and the S/N in the H_2 lines is poor). The fluxes of the strongest H_2 lines in our targets are about 2.E-14 erg/s/cm^2. From simulations, we need about 1000 counts in a line to measure the width of the line profile to better than 5%. The strongest H_2 lines will count at a rate of about 0.1 counts/sec, so we will require integrations of order 10^4 seconds, or 5 orbits per star. We will observe through the 0.2*0.06 arcsec slit, both to maximize spectral resolution and to minimize contamination from spatially-extended gas. The targets, T Tau, RU Lup, DF Tau, and DG Tau, all have very different chromospheric line profiles, perhaps due to inclination effects and/or different mass accretion rates. Interpretation of the existing H_2 line profiles is difficult, because of low S/N and because all were observed through the GHRS/LSA. The H_2-emitting gas is spatially extended in T Tau, and the spatial extent will affect the line profile. THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE MOLECULAR GAS. We will observe T Tau through the long slit at low dispersion to trace the spatial extent of the fluorescently-pumped H_2 gas. Here our requirement is a combination of sensitivity and spatial extent. We expect the surface brightness of the H_2 emission to decrease drastically as one moves off the star. We know that, in the case of T Tau, the spatial extent of the H_2 is of order 5-10 arcsec for the shocked gas (Herbst et al. 1996). To meet these goals, we will use G140L together with the 0.2*52 arcsecond slit. Our sensitivity in a 3 orbit integration (about 6500 seconds) to a narrow line is about 1.E-16 erg/s/cm^2 per spatial resolution element. This is about 0.5% the flux of the strongest H_2 lines in T Tau. For T Tau we will observe with the slit in 3 different orientations, all centered on T Tau N, the visible star. The first orientation will place the slit through the emission nebulosity 2 arcsec NW of the star (PA=-25D) (Herbst et al. 1996). The second orientation will be approximately perpendicular to the first. If the emission nebulosity is a bow shock illuminated by a jet from T Tau N, then this orientation should lie approximately in the plane containing the disk (keeping in mind that T Tau is oriented nearly pole-on). The final orientation (approximately N-S) will place the slit over T Tau S, the embedded infrared companion of T Tau. We will use the E140M spectra of the star (section 2 above) to help us interpret the G140L spectra, especially to deconvolve line blends. We will bin the spectra along the slit to generate sufficient signal to detect even weaker extended emission lines. Visits 1-3 obtain low dispersion spectra to map the circumstellar gas at position angles of 330, 270, and 0 degrees around T Tauri. We will acquire T Tau with the F25ND3 filter, because at V=10 it is close to the saturation limit in the F28X50LP filter. The long (7 second) exposure time accomodates the observed range of variability of the target. We will peak up on T Tau using the MIRROR and the 52X0.1 slit, and then observe through the wider 52X0.2 slit, since we are interested in the circumstellar gas. Orientations are computed by adding the 45 degree orientation of STIS long slit to the true position angle of the target. To make it easier to schedule the visits with orientation constraints, we set the visit parameter SCHED to 60% and decreased the exposure times. The first visit (PA=330) proved very difficult to schedule, so we widened the permissible orientation to +/- 15 degrees. The available window for this visit during 1999 is 7 days long. The second and third visits could be scheduled with a +/- 10 degree orientation constraint. Visit 2 is schedulable during a 10 day window with SCHED=60%; visit 3 is schedulable for about 2 months even without the SCHED parameter set. If the 7 and 10 day observability of visits 1 and 2, respectively, are too restrictive, we will consider increasing the SCHED parameter and slightly decreasing the observing time. Please contact the PI. Visits 4-10 contain G430L and E140M spectra with no orientation requirements. The purpose of the G430L spectrum is to act as a simultaneous activity and accretion monitor. The Hydrogen balmer-line profiles are sensitive to the accretion rate. While we will attempt to obtain simultaneous ground-based optical monitoring (at higher spectral resolution), a short G430L spectrum will ensure simultaneity while not detracting from the main science, the long E140M observation. Target orientation times and filters are selected to accomodate the historical range of variability of the targets. The expected count rate of the brightest target, T Tauri, in G140L, is 200 counts per second, based on GHRS G140L spectra. At this rate, the buffer need not be read out during an orbit, so we set the buffer dump time to 500 seconds. This rate may be changed without affecting the program. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There is no need for supporting observations for the molecular gas studies. However, we will be arranging ground- based spectroscopy and photometry to support ancillary studies of the transition region line profiles and the chromospheric activity. G. Gahm will request time on the Nordic Optical Telescope.
