Abstract 30 Doradus is the nearest and best resolved extragalactic starburst, hence a paradigm for the phenomenon. Recent NICMOS observations of the new stellar generation being triggered by the outflows from R136 establish 30 Dor as a prime region for investigation of massive-star formation as well. Since 1" already subtends 50, 000 AU at 50 kpc, HST makes unique contributions to the study of 30 Dor. A recent groundbased spectral-classification study has provided new insights into the stellar content of 30 Dor, but many of the targets are resolved into multiple systems in the available WFPC2 images. We propose to obtain spatially resolved STIS blue spectroscopy of some of the newly found multiple systems, which is essential to determine accurate stellar tempertures and masses. Several systems each in the new and previous stellar generations are included. The HST spatial resolution also reduces the contamination of t he stellar spectra by the nebula r emission lines, which is a critical advantage. We also propose dithered PC nebular- line images of the young Trapezium systems Knots 1-3, which interact strongly with the surrounding interstellar medium, forming several parsec-scale jets. Finally, we shall do two WFPC2 pointings with continuum filters, to complete the coverage of the field, which currently limits the search for multiple systems and the illuminating comparisons with IR and other data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8163( 5) - 06/20/00 09:11 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Spectral classification and atmospheric analysis of OB stars requires coverage of 3900-4800 Angstrom with moderate resolution. The two applicable STIS resolutions are lower and higher than the optimum for our purposes, which necessitates some compromises as a function of the stellar magnitudes. In order to keep the orbit requirements to one for most of the stars, and two for the two faintest, while obtaining the best possible information, we have adopted the following three strategies: for three 14th mag systems, we shall do the four G430M settings centered at 3936, 4194, 4451, and 4706 Angstrom; for two 15th mag systems, we shall omit the shortest of those settings; and for three 16-17th mag objects, we shall do a G430L observation plus the 4451 Angstrom setting only of G430M. To compensate the excessively low resolution, the G430L exposures will be to S/N of 100; while S/N of 30 is sufficient for the G430M, which will be binned by six pix els to a resolution of 1.7 Ang strom and an effective S/N of 50 per resolution element. Exposure times have been calculated with the STIS ETC, adopting a model O5 spectrum and the observed V and E_B-V for each object. Examples of the results for the three cases above are 4+4+4+5=17 min for P294/304; 9+9+10=28 min for P1201/1222; and 45+42=87 min for P409AB, respectively. The total GS, ACQ, and instrumental overheads for the three cases are 36, 30, and 24 or 29 min (depending on whether one or two orbits are required in the last case), respectively. (No peakup is required with the 52X0.2 slit.) The orbital visibility at this declination is 58 min. These results lead to the orbit requirements listed in the Observing Summary. We shall request special orientations of the slit to obtain two comparably bright components simultaneously in most cases, so we do not request the CVZ. The separations range from 0arcs1 to 1" . Given the 0arcs05 pixel scale of the STIS CCD, ta ilored extractions of the saddle-s haped spectral image profiles of the closer pairs will be performed. For instance, the outer half of each peak may be subtracted from the remainder of the profile to recover each of the two individual spectrograms. The two-position dithered PC images of Knots 1-3 in F502N, F656N, and F673N will require two orbits per target, as follows. They will provide a substantial improvement in spatial resolution with respect to WFC images, by at least a factor two. The first orbit on each target will be used to obtain four dithered exposures in F673N, with a total exposure time of 2000 sec; with 660 sec for overheads, the total is 58 min. The second orbit will be used to obtain two dithered exposures in both F502N and F656N, with a total exposure time of 1000 sec, and 800 sec for each; adding 720 sec of GS and instrumental overheads, a total of 56 min is required. (CR splitting may not be required with dithered exposures.) From flux me asurements in archival WFC images of Knot 3, we predict typical S/N ratios of nebular features in our PC images of about 37, 46, and 16 for filters F502N, F656N, and F673N, respectively. Finally, the two WFPC2 pointings to complete the coverage of 30 Dor in F336W, F555W, and F814W can be accomplished in one orbit (unlike in the figure, the image orientations will be the same for both). One CR-SPLIT exposure of 80 sec, and a short exposure in each filter will be made, to match the archival data for the rest of the field; with the instrumental overhead, 420 sec are required for each filter, or 1290 sec for each field. With the addition of 840 sec for GS acquisitions and telescope movement, the total time for both pointings is 57 min.
