Abstract Io plays a central role in the Jovian system, yet the mechanisms that couple its volcanoes, the tenuous atmosphere, the escaping corona and the plasma torus remain elusive. In 1999 there is the unique opportunity to combine HST observations with the Galileo close flybys of Io. A team comprising 40 experienced Io observers, modellers and theorists have come together to propose a campaign of HST observations that will address 4 critical issues concerning Io's enigmatic behavior: What do the compositions of plumes and surface deposits reveal about Io's volcanism? How is Io's SO2 atmosphere affected by volcanic activity? How does Io's atmosphere interact with the surrounding plasma environment? What are the unidentified atmospheric emitters detected by Galileo? What powers the Io torus emissions? Our team will perform 30 orbits of HST observations using WFPC2 and STIS to address these 4 tasks. On their own these HST observations will answer many issues of the emissions from Io's surface and plumes, atmosphere, corona and plasma torus. The synergy of combined HST and Galileo observations provides a powerful scientific opportunity that will not be repeated in the foreseeable future. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8169( 40) - 09/25/00 10:49 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ Our 30-orbit HST program targets Io and the Io plasma torus in close conjunction with Galileo spacecraft orbit perijoves in 1999, and two close Io flybys in orbits I24 and I25. The Galileo perijoves occur as follows: C21, 1-2 July; C22, 11 Aug; C23, 14 Sept; I24, 10-11 Oct; I25, 26 Nov (all dates in 1999). The two Io close flybys occur on 11 Oct at ~4:30UT; and 26 Nov at ~4UT. Our program consists of 16 visits with 19 targets. Visit 1: 2 orbits (Io) in early July with C21. Visit 2: 4 orbits targeting Io torus in C23 (Sept 1999). Visits 3-7: with I24 in October 1999. Visit 8: 1 orbit Acala plume, October 1999. Visits 9-11: 6 orbits with I25 in November 1999. Visits 12-16: 7 orbits with no time constraints. A short summary of the observations by task is given here. Task 1: Volcanoes. Pele plume: 5 orbits: 1 visits of 2 orbits during Galileo July 2nd 1999 observations (C21), and two visits of one and two orbits immediately before and after the Oct. 11 1999 flyby (I24). DUring the 2-orbit C21 visit #1, the plume will be imaged in a pre- transit orbit, and mapped using the 52x0.1 slit in a G230L spectroscopic observation to search for evidence of broad-band SO2 absorption. During the 2-orbit I24 visit #4, Io will be imaged with WFPC2 in the F255W, F336W, and F410M filters both immediately before (1st orbit), and during (2nd orbit) Jupiter transit, with most observing time (~ 30 min. per orbit) in the low S/N F255W filter. An identical observation sequence was done in July 1997, so S/N is known to be adequate. Acala plume: 1 orbit, visit #8, of WFPC2 imaging in F255W, F336W, and F410M filters with Io central longitude ~ 244 or 64 W, with Acala on the limb. The plume will be detectable at F255W if it is as bright as Pele was in July 1995. 0.9um spectroscopy: 1 orbit, visit #16, STIS spectral scan of Io's disk, central longitude ~ 290 W, G750L grating, 52X0.05 slit. 24 slit positions will span the disk. A similar Phase 2 Cycle 7 Ganymede scan has overhead of 60 sec.\ per slit position, with CR-SPLIT=2, and 37 minutes of on-target time after acquisition, so we expect 32 seconds exposure time per slit position on Io. The STIS ETC gives a S/N of 80 at 0.9um in 32 seconds with this instrument configuration, which is more than adequate. Task 2: Molecular Atmosphere. IO- MA1-SO2 (Pele), visit #5, during I24: Three HST orbits will be used to perform far-ultraviolet spectroscopy using the STIS/NUV-MAMA, grating G230L (1570-- 3180Angstrom) and the 52*0.1'' slit to measure the Io reflection spectrum which includes \sots and SO absorption bands indicative of the atmospheric abundances of these species. Both FOS and GHRS have previously measured the reflection spectrum at these wavelengths, so the flux is well known. The 52*0.1'' slit provides a compromise between adequate spectral resolution and throughput. Based on the previous detections of the bands by FOS observations, we estimate that S/N of ~20 is required in order to detect the bands at 2150Angstrom with the ~6Angstrom resolution of the G230L/52*0.1'' slit combination. The STIS ETC with an input spectrum of the Pele volcano region (peleflux2.dat) estimates ~7200 sec (~2 hr) is required to obtain S/N=18 over the Pele volcano. After acquisition and instrument overheads, this translates to three HST orbits each in I24 and I25. This observation will be followed immediately by a one-orbit STIS G140L observation to cross-calibrate the Lyman-alpha image technique of SO2 measurement with spectroscopically detected SO2 bands. IO-ECLPSE (visit #15): An additional observation of Io in eclipse, visit #15, using the STIS/NUV -MAMA with grating G230L and the 52*2'' slit will be used to search for emission from SO at 2550Angstrom produced by dissociative excitation of SO2. Task 3: Atomic Atmosphere. Most STIS imaging spectroscopy will use the 2" wide slit which produces full disk images of Io (~1.1" wide) at each emission line. IO-AA1-ECL1 (visit #12): STIS/FUV observations using grating G140L (1150- 1730Angstrom) and the 52X2 slit in TIMETAG mode will be made with Io passing into eclipse. Previous observations show good S/N ~30 for O 1356Angstrom emission patches ~0.3" across, with comparable S/N for emissions at 1304Angstrom (O) and 1479Angstrom (S). (S/N's apply to sunlit observations.) IO -AA2-I24B, C (visit #6, 7): During Galileo's Io fly-by in orbit I24, 3 orbits of MAMA G140L 52X2 TIMETAG spectroscopy will provide adequate S/N, based on previous observations as described above. 1 orbit of STIS/FUV-MAMA G140M(1276) TIMETAG spectroscopy is required to spatially resolve and spectrally separate the S and S+ 1256Angstrom emission multiplets; S/N ~25 based on previous observations. IO-AA3-I25A, B (visits #9, 11): During Galileo's Io fly-by in orbit I25, 2 orbits of MAMA G140L 52X2 TIMETAG spectroscopy will be obtained with S/N's ~ 30 as described above. Also, 2 orbits of STIS/FUV-MAMA G140M(1218) TIMETAG spectroscopy with the planetary slit 36X0.05P45 will be obtained. The planetary slit is unsupported but allows simultaneous imaging of both the N and S polar patches of Iogenic hydrogen Ly-Alpha. S/N is expected to be low (~3) but adequate for the simple tests proposed. This observation should be obtained when Io's geocentric velocity is as large as possible so that the core of the emission line is Doppler shifted from geocoronal Ly-Alpha. IO-ECLPSE (visit #13): Visible STIS/CCD spectroscopy of Io in eclipse will identify the emitting species seen in Galileo broad-band images. One orbit each using the G750M (5808 -6380Angstrom) and G430L gratings (2900-5700Angstrom) -both with the 2X2 slit- will search for atomic, ionic, molecular emissions as well as thermal emissions from hotspots. The G750M mode will image the known OI 6300Angstrom emission line at a S/N ~25% higher than dedicated WFPC2 exposures. S/N's are conservatively calculated assuming that scattered and diffracted light seen in WFPC2 images dominates the noise background. The STIS 2x2 slit may reduce instrumental scattering but we have not made this assumption. Task 4: Torus. For C23, I24 and I25, we will perform STIS FUV MAMA G140L 52x0.5 ACCUM mode observations, stepping the slit (using PATTERN) across a 25''*25'' square centered on the torus during one HST orbit. This setting obtains S+ 1256Angstrom, S++ 1198Angstrom and 1714Angstrom (whose ratio measures electron temperature) and S+3 1406Angstrom. Previous STIS observations show all have S/N's between 4 and 18 in 0.1Rj^2 (=2''^2) bins. For C23, four orbits are needed to span the longitude range sampled by Galileo, but only one orbit each is needed for I24 and I25. For I25 an additional orbit of STIS imaging will be used to measure the spatial structure of the torus in the UV at spatial resolution comparable to Galileo, using STIS to image S++ emissions at 1714, 1729Angstrom at SNR ~6 per 0.025Rj^2 (=0.5''^2) spatial resolution element. Real Time Justification ----------------------- This extensive HST campaign is predicated on close coordination of HST and Galileo in situ observations that are extremely time-critical in nature, as explained fully in our phase 1 proposal and approved by the TAC. We are fully aware of the difficulty in trying to execute such a tightly constrained, complicated observing program on solar system targets with HST. As such we emphasize that although we have stated our highest priorities for the time- critical observations in the phase 2 program, we are fully prepared to work closely, in detail, with STScI personnel in crafting a program that is flexible enough to be implemented and executed successfully. We realize this may involve compromises, and we are fully prepared to make them if necessary. Many of the observations in this program fall in two time-critical categories: (1) observations to be coordinated with the Galileo encounters (dates given above); and (2) observations taken with Io in eclipse by Jupiter or in Jupiter transit. We emphasize also that the eclipse observations may be EITHER INGRESS OR EGRESS - we do not have a preference, except that the acquisition strategy is different for the two and may need to be tailored to the type of eclipse that is schedulable. The Co-I's on this proposal (and others) will propose to use the major earth-based and space-based observatories to support these observations. A large campaign coordinated by the International Jupiter Watch is being planned. The relevant discipline leaders of the IJW are Co-I's on this proposal. Calibration Justification ------------------------- We have added the calibration observations (CCDFLATs for fringe removal) recommended by STScI/STIS to our program. An offset acquisition from any Galilean satellite is feasible (we use Europa but it can be changed to Ganymede or Callisto) is then followed by an orbit of Io in eclipse, followed by an orbit of Io in sunlight. The minimum amount of time in eclipse requested is 1350 seconds. An ingress observation starts with a STIS/CCD acquisition of Io in sunlight, followed by an observation of Io in eclipse. If scheduling an ingress observation is not feasible, we would consider an egress observation. An egress observation would require the acquistion of another Galilean satellite then an offset to Io in shadow. The orbits are split into two exposures each due to moving target limitations. We request the use of the unsupported 2X2 aperture to aide in Jupiter avoidance.
