Abstract Gravitational lenses are powerful tools for studying cosmology, galactic structure, and galaxy evolution. Such studies require large, uniform sets of photometric observations and must be conducted from space because typical image separations are ~1". CASTLES ( CfA- Arizona- Space- Telescope- LEns- Survey) is an ongoing survey of known lensed systems. Some of its goals are: to create a complete, uniform high- resolution photometric sample of the known galaxy-mass lenses; to obtain redshift estimates for all lens galaxies which lack spectroscopic redshifts; to find any source or lens components that have escaped detection and determine their photometric properties; to obtain precise astrometric data for all source components to improve lens models and estimates of H_0; and to investigate the wide field environments of the lens galaxies and their role in lensing. We propose to obtain WFPC2 V and I images of the 14 new lens systems discovered after previous CASTLES proposals; to re-image 13 lens systems with inadequate non-CASTLES observations; to image 2 systems that were excluded from CASTLES due to orbit cutbacks; and to obtain WFPC2 I images of 5 binary quasars. We again would waive any proprietary period for our data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8175( 10) - 12/11/00 15:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to extend CASTLES by (1) obtaining WFPC2 V (F555W) and I (F814W) observations of the 14 new lenses, (2) obtaining deeper WFPC2 V and I images of the 13 lenses where existing non-CASTLES observations are completely inadequate for accurate photometry, (3) obtaining WFPC2 I images of the 5 unobserved quasar binaries, and (4) including 3 new lenses that are projected to be discovered during the period leading up to these observations. Eight of the new lenses now have H band observations from the CASTLES Cycle 7-NICMOS program. Table 1 lists the existing and planned observations of lens systems and the targets we are proposing for Cycle 8. If the NICMOS repair mission proceeds, we will be able to complete the NICMOS photometry in Cycle 9, although that is not a requirement to accomplish the majority of our goals. In the original CASTLES proposal we included WFPC2 V and I observations only if there were no existing images. Many of these non-CASTLES images were fractional-orbit, multiple- filter snapshots that were adequate for demonstrating that the systems were gravitational lenses. Most were not dithered or adequately CR-split. Experience now shows that many of these images are completely useless for the quantitative scientific goals of the CASTLES project. We have added these 13 systems to the current proposal, with minimal orbital estimates predicated on being able to analyze the new and old observations simultaneously. In most cases the S/N ratio of the I (V) images will be improved by a factor of 2 (4). Our current sample contains a small set of targets that are now considered binary QSOs, rather than lens systems. We propose to obtain I images for those systems without any HST imaging (see Table 1). We include these targets to confirm that they are indeed not lensed, to search for any host galaxy structure, and to investigate their local environments. In the 18 months between our Cycles 7 and 8 proposals, a total of 14 new lenses were discovered, 8 of which we managed to include in our Cycle 7-NICMOS observations; we expect the trend to continue. We request 8 orbits beyond those assigned to specific targets for lenses discovered during the course of Cycle 8. The new discoveries are divided between systematic surveys and serendipitous discoveries. We already have an agreement with Paul Schechter and collaborators that they will quickly supply any new candidates from their surveys for CASTLES observations. In the past year, their projects have found 3 new lenses which we confirmed in Cycle 7- NICMOS. We emphasize strongly that the 8 orbits for new lenses are not intended merely to ``pad'' this proposal, but to keep up with a rapidly moving field and to provide an up-to-date data resource that is available to the entire community. We designed our program to complement the CASTLES NICMOS observations. Our exposures will suffice to obtain S/N ~ 10 in the central pixels of the majority of the lens galaxies. Thus, for example, we will be able to study both the overall color and color gradients in the lens galaxies. The majority of our targets are assigned 1 orbit in each of F555W and F814W. To optimize cosmic-ray and hot pixel removal, we plan to divide each observation into 4 dithered exposures. Based on our previous WFPC2 experience, the expected ~10\ outweighed by the improved image quality from combined, dithered observations. When existing data are of sufficient quality, we will combine them with our new images. Because diffraction spikes could degrade the quality of the combined images, we will use the same roll angle for new data as for existing exposures if the scheduling is feasible. Our collaboration is well placed to extend CASTLES. We combine considerable theoretical and observational experience. We have: (i) observed many individual lensed systems, using HST and other telescopes; in particular, the NICMOS part of CASTLES is approaching completion as we submit this proposal; (ii) developed a publicly-available, sophisticated custom package of C- programs and IRAF routines for our WFPC2 and NICMOS reductions; (iii) fitted lens models to individual systems, and compared them to the optical properties of the lenses; (iv) conducted systematic searches for lenses e.g. Kochanek, Falco & Schild 1995; ApJ 452:109; (v) studied the cosmological applications of lensing, based on statistical analyses of the known lenses, and systematically modeled all the known lensed systems using the same modeling software; and (vi) studied many of the same issues using other astronomical tools. We again would waive any proprietary period for our data, adding to our WWW-based archive (http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/castles) of the data we are acquiring in Cycle 7, and earlier data, as they become available. NOTE: our total orbit assignment was cut to about 1/3 of our initial request, thus necessitating a severe limiting of the number of targets. We also swapped targets with the WFPC2 portion of GO-7495, as approved by ST.
