Abstract A systematic search for giant planet and brown dwarf companions to stars in the solar neighborhood is a cornerstone of the NICMOS IDT's Environments of Nearby Stars (EONS) program. A carefully selected candidate list of 74 stars was observed using the NICMOS coronagraph at 1.6 microns. We have found possible sub-stellar companions as faint as H=22, 10 to ~15 magnitudes fainter than their primaries at separations of ~0.8" to 5.0" corresponding to minimum physical separations of less than 10 AU for some of the stars in the sample. The lower mass limit depends on age, distance, and spectral type, but can be as low as 3-5 M(Jupiter) for many of our targets. Following the initial search-phase, second epoch spectrographic observations are required to characterize the physical nature of the putative companions. STIS spectra will allow us to compare the atomic line and molecular band strengths of key tracers for very low mass M and L stars (TiO, VO, and FeH bands), brown dwarfs similar to GL 229B (LiI 8216, CsI 8521 and 8944, H20 9300 and 9500 bands), RbI 7800 and 7948, CrH 8611 and 8800 for hotter BDs, and CH4 8890 in giant-Jupiters. Ground- based atmospheric absorption compromises the ability to obtain high quality spectra in the broad H2O vapor bands in the ~9300-9600 spectral region. With such observations, we can address questions as fundamental as: Is here a continuity of objects across the sub-stellar mass spectrum bridging the main sequence to planetary objects? What is their frequency of occurrence? At what distances will they be found from their primaries? And, what implications will these discoveries have for our understanding of stellar/planetary formation mechanisms? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8176( 11) - 08/17/00 14:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ 1) Each observation begins by acquiring the PRIMARY star into the 52"x0.2" slit by a mode-2 ACQ exposure. Exposure times for the ACQs were determined using the STIS ETC, I-band magnitudes as given in our Phase 1 proposal (and now on the Phase 2 ACQ mode exposure line comments). We employ the ND3 or ND5 filters for all ACQs as required, except for HD98800 where the OIII filter is used. 2) Following the ACQ exposures the secondary target is placed in the slit by means of a SAM derived from the definition of offset targets. High precision astrometric target offsets were determined from Cycle 7 NICMOS target acquisition and/or coronagraphic images. We wish to keep the primary as far out of the slit as possible, so we employ relatively tight ORIENT ranges (+/-5 degrees) so that the line joining the primary and secondary is perpendicular to the slit. We do not care which side of the slit the primary is on, so we use two ORIENT ranges separated by 180 degrees. We do this to allow for better schedualbility. 3) Spectral imaging sequences for CD-33.7795, HR 7329, GL503.2, GL577, HD102982, and HD98800 will each be completed in one orbit. With the exception of HD98800, spectra of each of these targets is obtained with the G750M grating in three tilt settings of 8311, 8825 and 9336 Angstrom central wavelengths to cover the spectral regions of interest. At each tilt setting we execute a 2 position dither along the slit of 0.35" to allow replacement of bad/hot pixels. At each position the exposures are CR-split for cosmic ray removal.. Thus we obtain 4 spectra at each tilt setting. After each set of 4 spectral images we obtain CCDFLATS required to calibrate out the effects of fringing which will appear longward of ~ 7500 Angstroms (or region of interest). The last of the fringe flats is taken in target occultation. 4) For HD98800 we acquire with the F25x50OIII and then first obtain G750L spectra for the A and B components, with an intervening fringe flat. For both components we use a CR-SPLIT 3-position step pattern, and a gain of 1 (i.e., 6 spectra for each). We then obtain G750M/6768 spectra of the B and A components with a CR- SPLIT 2-step pattern (primarily for Li 6708, but also this setting covers H- alpha) This will give a S/N of ~200 for a 40s integration at each step position at 6708. A fringe flat for G750M/6768 is taken after the A spectra in occultation. For this target we are requesting F30 schedualability. 5) ROSAT 116 is observed in two 3-orbit visits. In the first orbit of the first visit we obtain a low res (G750L) spectrum of the primary (also with a 2-step, CR split exposure), and a corresponding CCDFLAT) before putting the secondary target in the slit. In the remainder of the first orbit, and in the second and third orbits, we obtain G750L spectra (2-step, CR-split) to fill the orbits, with CCDFLATS taken in target occultation. These three orbits must be implicitly executed as a NO GAP sequence, as enforced by the ONBOARD ACQ FOR requirement on the ACQ line in the first orbit. We do not reacquire on the second and third orbits, but rely on the PCS to re-establish the vehicle pointing quaternion to reposition the secondary target in the slit. This structure is repeated nearly identically in the second ROSAT 116 visit, except we omit the low res spectrum of the primary. We have broken this up into two 3-orbit visits based upon the "<6 orbit" breaking rule imposed in the cycle 8 proposal instructions, and our realization that PCS performance can be degraded over multiple orbits. The two visits need not be linked closely in time, but the MUST be done at the same ORIENT angle. 6) HD177996 is observed in a manner similar to ROSAT 116, but the second visit is only two orbits long. BRI00214-021 is only a single 3-orbit visit and is observed identically to the first ROSAT 116 visit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- NONE. We have no Real-Time Requirements Calibration Justification ------------------------- We obtain CCDFLATS at each grating/tilt setting to allow us to remove the effects of "fringing" longward of ~ 7500 Angstroms. The last CCDFLAT in each orbit should be taken in target occultation. Additional Comments ------------------- 1) On the recommendation of our CS we are not executing ACQ/PEAKUPS, but ACQuire directly into the 0.2" wide slit. This is contrary to the advise given by STScI on their Web server. We have been told that the acquisition performance exhibited in Cycle 7 demonstrates that peakups are not required following ACQs for the 0.2" slit. 2) RPS-2 complains with a "syntax error" on the use of a J2000 epoch for many of our targets which are PPM stars. The error message indicates that the epoch must be earlier than the current epoch (eg., 1999.130) EXCEPT for PPM and HIC stars. The stars it is complaining about are PPM stars, however. We have used these fixed target definitions successfully in Cycle 7 to acquire the same targets into the NICMOS coronagraph and do not wish to introduce any element of risk by changing them. If this extraneous "syntax error" precludes us from submission of the Phase-2 prop file via RPS-2 submission we will e-mail it to our PC. 3) Subsequent to our Phase-1 submission we have elected to drop ROSAT 7, which was on our original STIS target list. Follow-up NICMOS observations obtained after the Phase-1 submission deadline ruled out the possible substellar nature of this candidate. We had originally budgeted 4 orbits (from our allocated 20) for this target. In it's place we are requesting the substitution of two targets which were on our 7226/7227 surveys, but not calibrated and/or observed at the time of our original submision: BRI0214-021 (3 orbits) and HD98800 (1 orbit). We place a star of the same spectral type as TWA6A, K7V, offset from the slit in exactly the same position as it was when we observed TWA6. This means the star is offset by 2.5493", predominantly in X The ofsets are slightly different for both exposure lines 30 and 31, and there is a slight Y component as Visits 02 and 03 were rolled by 1 degree diffrerntially and were not oriented so that the line joining the stars was exactly orthogonal to the slit.
