Abstract The results from the high-z supernova groups that the Universe is accelerating rests entirely on the observation that the distant SN Ia are 0.25 magnitudes fainter than expected for an empty Universe. While both groups have argued that this magnitude offset is not due to quantifiable systematic effects, it is critical to test this assumption in new ways. We propose to use WFPC2 to obtain rest frame U and B photometry for four z~ 0.85 SN Ia. These observations will be coupled to ground- based rest frame V photometry and spectra. These data, combined with previous samples, will extend the D_L vs. z diagram for SN Ia to z~0.85, and allow us to discriminate the redshift dependence of supernova apparent magnitudes in an accelerating Universe from that expected to result from systematic effects such as age of the stellar population, chemical evolution, a drift in the properties of dust, and weak gravitational lensing. Evolution of SN Ia is a primary concern and it is only by careful object by object comparison that subtle effects will be apparent. We therefore also propose to use WFPC2 to obtain rest frame B and V photometry for four z~ 0.5 SN Ia. These data will be combined with extensive Keck spectra and rest frame U and R photometry obtained from the ground. The four z~ 0.5 objects will have light curves and spectra of comparable quality to nearby SN Ia, and will provide a basis for a detailed comparison. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8177( 11) - 05/17/01 12:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To measure accurate distances with SN Ia, precise photometry in at least two of the rest frame equivalents to B, V, R, and I is required spanning ~ 20 days (rest frame) around maximum light, with U providing information more aimed at studying systematic effects such as evolution or extinction. Figure 5 shows the atmospheric transmission and emission, as well as the broad bands we propose to use here (top panel). In the bottom panel, U, B, V, and R are shown redshifted to z = 0.5 and z=0.85. As the figure shows, at z~ 0.5, V~ U, F675W ~ B, F814W ~ V; and at z~ 0.85, F675W ~ U, F814W ~ B. We have designed a 0.95micron filter (F950), which provides a good translation to R at z=0.5, and V at z=0.85. This is the reddest bandpass possible before night time sky emission overwhelms the faint SNe we plan to observe, and is accessible by some CCDs (e.g., Lincoln Lab CCDs with deep depletion have 40% QE, instruments on 4m class telescopes will provide S/N ratios > 20 for z=0.85 SN Ia near maximum light, and that the filter is not strongly affected by variability in the night sky transmission. The bottom panel shows the UBVR bands redshifted to z=0.85 (dotted lines) and z=0.5 (solid lines). We have performed simulations to determine how to optimize our signal to noise ratio in measuring distances per unit HST time. Photometric uncertainties were estimated with the Exposure Time Calculator and verified using our Cycle 7 data. These simulations indicate we should observe each SN as soon as possible after discovery, and then revisit it regularly until 25 days (rest frame) after maximum light. Since we wish to observe SN Ia at both z ~ 0.5 and z~ 0.85, we have chosen a time sequence (and filter sequence) which allows either redshift of SN to be observed with the same observations. We specify how and when the SN observations are to be made, and their position, accurate to +/-1^degrees, months in advance. Many of the SN Ia that we discover in our ground-based program will typically be 10 or more days before maximum light (observer's frame) --- and we choose particularly young objects based on their spectra. After the supernovae are discovered, their accurate position is updated, and sent up in the HST SMS load, to be executed 5 days later. This procedure has worked well in Cycle 7, but we realize the time-critical nature of this program still poses some operational difficulties. We stand prepared to do whatever it takes to overcome them. In particular, we believe that Ron Gilliland's presence at STScI will help insure that the program is executed rapidly and smoothly. The advent of low-noise large-format CCDs has revolutionized our ability to detect distant supernovae as demonstrated by Perlmutter et al. (1997) and Schmidt et al. (1997). By observing fields at the end of a dark run, and then revisiting the fields 4 weeks later, young objects can be found by subtracting the first images from the second. Our experience at CFHT indicates that we can reliably find in excess of 10 supernovae/(sq. degree) if we image down to m_I=24. The objects will have redshifts to z ~ 1, and include enough candidates to find targets close to the optimum redshifts for this study, z ~ 0.5, and z~ 0.85. We have active programs in place at the CTIO 4m and CFHT to discover supernovae using the large (and improving) mosaic cameras available on these telescopes, and at Keck for obtaining follow up spectroscopy. We will apply for time to use the VLT and the new MMT to increase our spectral capabilities. Our ground-based photometry will be carried out using ESO 3.6m, ESO NTT, Hawaii 88- inch (with Tip-Tilt correction), WIYN, CTIO 4m (with Tip-Tilt correction), ARC 3.5m, MSSSO 2.3m (with Tip-Tilt correction), and Danish 1.5m telescopes where we have successfully obtained data in the past. We are observing 3 fields for this fall 1999 campaign on HST and have adopted the following naming conventions: 1) Field 23:30:00 +00:08:00 Names: SN1999B[1, 2, 3] Targets no. 11, 21 and 31, Visit sets 11-15, 21-25 and 31-35. 2) Field 02:30:00 -00:05:00 Names: SN1999C[4, 5, 6] Targets no. 41, 51 and 61, Visit sets 41-45, 51-55 and 61-65. 3) Field 04:15:30 +05:35:00 Names: SN1999D[7, 8] Targets no. 71, and 81, Visit sets 71-75 and 81-85. In all cases we prefer that the same ORIENT be maintained for the full visit set if possible, but can relax this as needed to allow scheduling. In all cases the preferred no. of days after the ~22 Nov 99 start is +9, 18, 27, 45 for successive visits to the same target. Note that for Targets/Visits 71 and 81 the start window is extended by three days to provide flexibility, also that in the full program only Visits 75 and 85 were not able to use SAME ORIENT. Note to PC/CS: We are actually planning to observe 3, 3, 2 Supernovae in the 3 primary search fields respectively, i.e., each of the targets specified here is expected to execute. As before we will provide STScI with at least a comparable number of secondary targets in each field in case guide stars cannot be found for the primary candidates.
