Abstract Space-based UV and EUV surveys have revealed a new population of detached binary systems, comprising main-sequence primaries that dominate the optical light, with hot white-dwarf secondaries that are revealed only at short wavelengths. We propose a snapshot survey in order to search for resolved, Sirius-like systems among these candidates. Subsequent determinations of the visual orbits of the resolved binaries with HST will provide dynamical measurements of the white- dwarf masses. Since there are only a very few dynamically determined white-dwarf masses at present, this programme could lead to a doubling or tripling of the number known. As a result, this sample will yield direct observational data on the white dwarf mass-radius and initial-mass ash final-mass relations and provide important tests of the respective theoretical models. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8181( 4) - 02/17/99 17:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The required observations are a series of exposures with the Planetary Camera chip of the WFPC2, through a single filter for each binary. Exposure times were calculated (using the WWW exposure calculator), based on the spectral type and visual magnitude of the primary together with the temperature and estimated visual magnitude of the white dwarf, to achieve the maximum signal to noise just short of saturation of the CCD by the brighter component. Filters were chosen to give approximately equal fluxes from each component, optimising the ability to separate them in the image. Table 2 summarises the exposure times required together with the filters used. We propose to waive completely the proprietary data-rights period. These FUSE observations will give us access to the Lyman lines for determination of the stellar temperature and surface gravity, from which we can determine the stellar mass. This work will, therefore, complement the binary separation measurements that will be obtained with our HST observations. There are no time-dependent or other requirements on either the FUSE or WFPC2 observations of each target.
