Abstract Early HST observations by Lynds et al. revealed a nuclear optical ``hotspot" with FWHM ~ 0.''25, now known to be displaced ~ 0.''1 from the most probable location of the `hidden' nucleus. The nature of the hotspot is mysterious and will be addressed by a high SNR STIS spectrum, combined with existing polarimetric observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8185( 7) - 11/08/99 07:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain three high SNR spectra to address the nature of the continuum radiation of the optical hotspot. We first observe the near-IR Ca II triplet region with G750M to measure a stellar velocity dispersion. Then the spectrum for H-beta region is obtained through G430M covering H-beta and OIII, with enough SNR to detect or set a tight limit on a broad H-beta component. Finally the high SNR continuum spectrum from near-UV to optical is taken with G430L to evaluate the starlight contribution and the unidentified continuum component. Throughout, we will run the slit at the north-south direction (PA = -14deg to 0deg), so that we cover the location of the hidden nucleus as well as the optical hotspot. Right after the G750M exposure, we need to acquire the fringe flat. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- A duplication check indicates GTO 7573 and GO 7353. As discussed in the justification in Phase I, they are brief and insufficient to investigate the nature of the continuum radiation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Paper Products: YES Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: Makoto Kishimoto, Physics Department, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106 Ship Via: Email: makoto@physics.ucsb.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8185( 7) - 11/08/99 07:29 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 NGC1068- GALAXY, SEYFERT, RA=02H 42M 40.711S +/- 0.10", J2000 V = V = 14.6+/-0.3 HOTSPOT HOTSPOT DEC=-00D 0' 47.81" +/- 0.10", +1148 B-V = 0.5+/-0.4 PLATE-ID=0085 E(B-V) = 0.02+/-0.01 F-CONT(4500)=4.0+/-1.2e-15 F-LINE(5007)=2.2+/-0.2e-12 W-LINE(5007)=25+/-5 8185( 7) - 11/08/99 07:29 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: ORIENT 31D TO 55D On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 NGC1068-HOT STIS/C ACQ F28X50L MIRROR ACQTYPE=DIFFUSE,CHECKBOX=5, 1 2.0 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 20, 40, SPOT CD P DIFFUSE-CENTER=FLUX-CENTROID 50 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20 NGC1068-HOT STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2 G750M 8561 CR-SPLIT=2,PATTERN=ALONG-SLIT, 1 600 S SPOT CD NUM-POS=3,STEP-SIZE=0.25355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 30 CCDFLAT STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2 G750M 8561 2 DEF CD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 40 NGC1068-HOT STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2 G430M 4961 CR-SPLIT=2,PATTERN=ALONG-SLIT, 1 800 S SPOT CD NUM-POS=3,STEP-SIZE=0.25355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 50 NGC1068-HOT STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2 G430L 4300 CR-SPLIT=4,PATTERN=ALONG-SLIT, 1 720 S SPOT CD NUM-POS=3,STEP-SIZE=0.25355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8185( 7) - 11/08/99 07:29 - [ 5] Summary Form for Proposal 8185 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apertures F28X50LP 52X0.2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations STIS/CCD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes ACQ ACCUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters ACQTYPE=DIFFUSE CHECKBOX=5 DIFFUSE-CENTER=FLUX-CENTROID STEP-SIZE=0.25355 NUM-POS=3 PATTERN=ALONG-SLIT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category GO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements ORIENT 31D TO 55D ONBOARD ACQ FOR 20, 40, 50 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spectral Elements MIRROR G750M G430M G430L ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target Names NGC1068-HOTSPOT CCDFLAT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wavelengths 8561 4961 4300 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
