Abstract We propose to use the unique high-resolution optical and ultraviolet capabilities of HST to investigate the physics of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the nature of their host galaxies. Our approach is three-pronged: 1] rapid ultraviolet spectroscopy obtained within days of several outbursts will allow us to probe the physics of the relativistic fireball and constrain the density of the surrounding medium and the dust extinction in the host to the fireball, and in many cases will provide the redshift of the GRB; 2] ultraviolet spectroscopy and imaging will allow us to obtain redshifts of host galaxies which cannot be found by Keck or the VLT (due to a lack of strong visible lines in the redshift range 1.3 < z < 2.4), permitting us to measure the rate of GRBs as a function of cosmological time; 3] optical images of the hosts taken both shortly after outburst and up to a year later will permit a study of the morphology of the hosts, determination of the position of the burst on t he host to 100 pc accuracy, and e x amination of the late time behavior of the afterglow. The morphology and astrometry will provide a crucial discriminant between models for the creation of GRBs; the long-term behavior of the light-curve probes the density of the host ISM and the energetics of the fireball. This comprehensive set of observations will provide new insights into the astrophysics of GRBs and their high redshift host galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8189( 27) - 03/21/01 15:41 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In this figure we simulate the observed NUV MAMA PRISM spectrum which would be obtained from a 5 orbit observation (4.5 orbits + 0.5 orbits setup) taken 5 days after outburst of an OT which has R = 20 at 24 hours after outburst, falls as t^-1.25, and has a spectral index f(Lambda) = lambda^-1 (l.h.s.) and f(Lambda) = lambda^0 (r.h.s.). The spectrum has a Lyman limit cutoff appropriate for an object at z=1.5 The former is roughly what is expected from standard afterglow theory citespn98, the latter simulates the effect of internal extinction in the host -- both of these spectral indices have been seen in the optical colors of GRB afterglows. An OT could be up to a factor of ~ 3 fainter and trigger our prompt NUV spectroscopic TOO. endfigure sectionOverview We expect that during the year of Cycle 8, there will be about 9 Beppo-Sax Bursts, and, if all goes well, 20 HETE Bursts (HETE is expected to produce about 30 bursts per year, but is now scheduled for launch in October, or 3-4 months after the start of t he Cycle). Given that HETE will be a new instrument we assume for purposes of this proposal that between Beppo-Sax and HETE 20 bursts will be successfully localized. We will only trigger on bursts that occur in the half of the sky, |b| > 30, so that our efforts are spent understanding the nature of the bursts and their hosts rather than Galactic extinction (this is particularly important for the NUV work, due to the 2200 Angstrom feature in Galactic dust). We can therefore expect to be able to observe at least one-dozen high-latitude bursts over the course of the year. sectionPrompt NUV MAMA Spectroscopy of the OT Based on observations of the 9 well- identified OTs, we would expect that approximately one-half will be brighter than R = 21 at 24 hours after outburst. These will be our targets. We will ask for a TOO to occur within 2-5 days of the request. Five orbits will be requested on each TOO. Much of the first orbit will be spent in calibration. As can be seen in F i gure 4, we can expect good sign a l to noise on these objects, allowing us to both determine a spectral index and the redshift (from the Lyman limit) if 1.2 < z < 2.4. Crucial to the success of this program is our choice of the prism over the gratings. The prism has a throughput which is a factor of ten better than the gratings at their peak. Although calibrating the prism requires more effort than the gratings, through the use of a careful observing procedure we should be able to calibrate to about one pixel or 10 Angstrom to 20 Angstrom. The 52 * 0.2 slit will be used. Past experience suggests other demands on the telescope will prevent some requests for a fast TOO from being accommodated. We expect that of the six potential opportunities, we will be able to schedule four. We therefore ask for 4 * 5 = 20 orbits for this part of the program. sectionLate Time NUV Spectroscopy and Imaging of Hosts Based on the work of Hogg and Fruchter (1998) (and the fact that of the three bursts with |b| > 30 t wo h ave redshifts) we expect Ke ck o r t he VLT to obtain the redshifts of 60\ We then expect 4 -- 5 hosts without redshifts six- months after outburst. At least one of these should have its redshift established by the fast NUV OT observations described above. Therefore we expect to have 4 new targets. Hosts brighter than V ~ 23.5 will be observed with the STIS NUV MAMA and prism. To supress sky background the available 6'' aperture will be used in slitless mode, although a slit and lamp will be used for wavelength calibration. Fainter hosts (up to V <25.5) will be imaged with the NUV MAMA. In cases where the break is not detected we will request further FUV MAMA observations. Each observation will require 3 orbits for imaging or 4 for spectrocopy. We estimate 17 orbits will suffice for this part of our program. In addition to the TOO program we request to observe the high latitude host of GRB 980613, which was discovered a few months ago, but which meets the conditions of our TOO -- (|b| > 30^deg re es and deep Keck spectra but no re dsh ift determination (Metzger, in preparation). The host has V ~ 24. We therefore request 5 additional orbits to image the host in the NUV and the optical. sectionSTIS/CCD Imaging of the GRBs and their hosts In order to both obtain morphological information on the GRB hosts and to locate the position of the GRB on the host to 0arcs01 we plan to observe all expected 12 high latitude GRBs with the STIS CCD. We request one orbit within 2-3 weeks of outburst, followed by a second two-orbit observation six months to a year later. The preferred times of the observations will be determined by the initial magnitude and power-law decay of the GRB OT. The first orbit will be made deliberately short (< 2000s of exposure) to allow it to be easily placed on the schedule. During this orbit long and short exposure lengths will be used to insure that both the background objects and the OT are properly exposed. Due to the probability that some TOO requests will not be accommodate d, w e re ques t 10 * 3 = 30 orbit s. T ogeth er wi th the CCD image we will take of the host of GRB 980316, this will mean a total of ~ 14 hosts will have been imaged by HST at the end of this program, nearly quintupling the sample of 3 now available.
