Abstract We propose deep WFPC2 imaging and STIS slitless spectroscopy of two of our ultra- deep VLA fields. Those 4- and 6-cm maps have 1-Sigma levels of 3 and 11 Mu-Jy, respectively, comparable to VLA observations of the HDF, and show 14 and 9 sources in statistically complete samples. Keck spectroscopy and imaging to B, R, I ~26.5 have identified most of the sources as compact, luminous starbursting and interacting galaxies at redshifts z es1; about 25\ at z>1.5. Our goals here are: (1) identify the remaining sources; (2) pinpoint regions of star formation; (3) quantify the incidence of interaction using spatially-resolved kinematics; (4) quantify morphologies; and (5) constrain the evolution of these faintest of radio sources. Only the HDF and one other field have such deep VLA, HST, and Keck data, and there is strong evidence that field-to-field variations are significant. WFPC2 images with F814 will provide the resolution needed to measure morphologies on sub-kpc scales, iden ti fy interaction- induced star-formation, and distinguish AGN from non-AGN components. Slitless spectroscopy with STIS will reveal faint emission-line sources invisible in our Keck images and will provide spatially-resolved kinematics, necessary to disentangle the starforming components in interacting systems. The VLA fields extend over some 8\min\ each, so both WFPC2 and STIS can be used simultaneously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8191( 11) - 06/22/01 15:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose deep WFPC2 images of 10 (Lynx.2) and 5 (SA68) sources from the complete VLA samples, with coordinated parallel observations with STIS in slitless spectroscopic mode. The VLA fields are 8\min\ across, but the 10+5 sources can be imaged in two WFPC2 pointings per field. Therefore, each field would be imaged in two settings, with a 180degrees rotation in between. This way, the 51\sec\ STIS CCD FOV will be included within each WFPC2 pointing. The median I magnitude in our sample is I_med=20, but we are only 80\ brightness; some objects will in fact be fainter (and some are undetected at I=26.5). With 3000 seconds per orbit (55 minutes visibility at DEC=+44 for Lynx.2), we will reach 24 mag/arcsec^2 surface brightness with S/N=3.7, while for a point source we reach I_814=24 with S/N=36. Assuming most sources to be resolved at about the 1\sec\ level and aiming for at least S/N=10 per pixel, we then require about 7 orbits per pointing, or 14 total, in Lynx.2. The so mewhat shallower (in both VLA and Keck data) SA68 field would require 5 orbits per pointing, or 10 total, to reach about half a magnitude less deep. We will use CR-SPLITS, based on previous experience with WFPC2 cosmic ray contamination. The coordinated parallel STIS/CCD slitless spectra will be obtained with the G750L low-resolution grating, covering 4000Angstrom\ centered on 7751Angstrom\ for a centrally- located source, in 50CCD mode. Short undispersed images will allow identification of the spectra. Essentially this will be like the STIS Parallel Survey (Gardner Etal\ 1998, ApJL, 492, 99), which detected emission line galaxies at z es1 in random fields during pure parallel observations. With its 51\sec\ field of view, STIS will not be able to cover all the sources observed by the WFPC2. However, with judicious placement, we can cover about two-thirds of them (7 in Lynx.2, 3 in SA68). These would be the first STIS observations of Mujy-selected galaxies (not including t he optically-selected HDF). For 3000 s integrations over 5-7 orbits, we should be sensitive to unresolved emission line sources with line fluxes of ~ 10^- 16\flux -- 10^41\ergs for z=0.75, q_0 = 0.1, h=1.0, or SFR~ 1 \sfr for H-alpha\ -- at 7000Angstrom\ with S/N~10. Primary emission lines of interest will be redshifted H-alpha, \hb, O Iii, and O Ii\ -- all common to star-formation regions, and especially strong in interacting starbursts. While the resolution R = 750 (400 kms) is not ideal for emission lines expected to have FWHM<250kms, the huge wavelength coverage more than offsets the loss in velocity resolution. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We already have invested hundreds of hours of VLA time and several nights of Keck time obtaining the Mujy\ source catalogs and followup optical and near-IR imaging and spectra. We have essentially doubled the optical identifications and redshifts of known Mujy\ sources. Both the Lynx.2 and SA68 fields fields were studied extensively with photographic plates and CCDs on 4-meter class telescopes, and with the VLA and Westerbork radio telescopes as part of the massive Leiden-Berkeley Deep Survey (Windhorst et al. 1984, AASupp 58, 1; ibid, p. 39; Kron et al. 1985, AA, 146, 38).
