Abstract The census of galaxies in the Local Volume of space is very incomplete, particularly at the faint end. We propose a snapshot survey to use the high spatial resolution of HST to determine whether selected galaxies are nearby on the basis of resolution into stars, and the magnitudes and colors of the brightest stars. Our sample is chosen from the survey by team members Karachentsev & Karachentseva (KK98) of some 260 nearby dwarf galaxy candidates. Our F606W & F814W snapshot survey will concentrate on the 75 candidates most likely to be within 4 Mpc. One HST orbit per galaxy results in a distance from the magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) and is sufficiently deep to identify the brightest stellar population. Keck, VLT, and other large telescopes will be used for spectroscopic follow-up for abundances and kinematics. As an example of the science to follow from this survey, consider the incompleteness of the dwarf galaxy census of the Local Group. Compariso ns with the composite luminosity f unction of nearby groups indicate that there may be as many as ~ 30 faint Local Group members yet to be discovered. If only 10% of this sample turn out to be Local Group members, the luminosity function of the Local Group will no longer appear truncated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8192( 3) - 02/17/99 15:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This Snapshot proposal aims to take one 600 s F606W exposure and one 600s F814W exposure in a single visit to produce a quick look color magnitude diagram of a possible nearby galaxy. The target will be centered on the geometric center of WFC3. The exposures will not be CR-SPLIT to maximize S/N. In an old stellar population characteristic of a dwarf spheroidal, the tip of the giant branch will be at M_I = - 4.0, M_V = -2.5 (Da Costa & Armandroff 1990). To look for dwarf galaxies out to 4 Mpc ((m-M)_o = 28.0), or roughly the distance to the M81 group, we need to detect at a reasonable S/N stars with I=24.0 and V=25.5. Assuming a S/N=10 the WFPC2 exposure calculator recommends 600 seconds in F606W and 600 seconds in F814W (no split). If an object is significantly closer and within the Local Group (say at 1 Mpc), then we will have the same S/N some 3 magnitudes down the RGB, and a metallicity estimate can be made. The majority of the galaxies are smaller than 1 arc-minute in size and will fit comfortably on a single WFC CCD. We propose one exposure in each filter for a total SNAP time of 34 min: 6 min guide star acquisition, 3 minutes for F606W overhead, 3 minutes for F814W overhead, plus exposure times. This fits well in the recommended 25 - 45 minute window for snaps. In a Snapshot proposal, th ere is no guarantee of getting both filters, but even one filter will allow us to see if the object is resolved, photometer those stars unaffected by cosmic rays, and look for star clusters. In the long 600 second exposure, the exposure time calculator predicts that cosmic rays will cover about 2.5\ exposure is obtained, cosmic rays will be a small problem. If two filters are obtained, then we can reject cosmic rays by scaling and combining both exposures at the price of a systematic error in the colors. But we will be able to see if the object is a dIrr (blue stars) or dSph (red stars), and an estimate of the R magnitudes of the brightest stars. We request a 3 month proprietary period for the data. Data reduction will be done through use of IRAF and STSDAS routines, plus DAOPHOT to obtain magnitudes and colors of the stars. The results will be a luminosity function, a color-magnitude diagram, and a list of extended objects which could be star clusters. For interpretatio n, the F606 & F814W system is well understood in terms of stellar populations. Immediate discoveries of new Local Volume members will be announced through a web site to be set up for this project, plus email and reports in various newsletters like the Dwarf Tales edited by one of us (Grebel). Papers will be written for each object in detail as enough HST and groundbased data becomes available and then a final summary paper at the end of the project.
