Abstract The ROSAT Deep Survey covers an area of 0.3 deg^2 in the direction of the Lockman Hole and has found a source density of ~ 1000 deg^-2 with fluxes above 10^-15 cgs. Spectroscopic identifications of optical counterparts at the Keck telescope are complete to an X-ray flux limit of 2 \cdot 10^-15 cgs and optical magnitudes of R<23.5^m. Approximately 70\ 0.08 to 4.45. This is the highest AGN surface density detected in any waveband. The X-ray luminosity function of AGN shows substantial density evolution, resulting in a significantly larger space density of low- luminosity AGN (mainly Seyferts) in the redshift range 1 < z <2, than expected from the conventional pure luminosity evolution models. We have selected a statistically complete sample of Seyfert galaxies from the ROSAT Deep Survey. The galaxies have a redshift range of 0.9--1.9; this is the most distant available Seyfert sample. We propose to image these objects with broad-band WFPC2 filters in order to investigate the e vo lution of their morphology and e nvironments. The observations will provide insights into the Seyfert phenomenon at intermediate redshift and will complement similar HST studies of normal galaxies, clusters and quasars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8194( 6) - 10/27/99 06:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our faint sample of Seyfert galaxies in the Lockman Hole is about a factor of 20 more distant than local samples. With an angular resolution about a factor of 5-10 better than groundbased telescopes we can obtain images of a rest-frame spatial resolution similar to that of local samples, which are definitely not achievable from the ground. In particular HST will be able to separate the nuclear emission from the host-galaxy continuum and study the host galaxy morphology as well as possible signatures of interaction and star forming activity. With its ~2.5 arcmin field-of-view, WFPC2 will be able to study the environment of our Seyfert galaxies and search for possible companions out to a distance of ~300 kpc, a size typical for groups of galaxies. Our objects have R magnitudes in the range 20--23 and are therefore relatively easy for HST. The prime scientific goal, morphological studies of high-redshift Seyfert host galaxies and interactions, can be compared with successful HS T studies to discern quasar host g alaxies (e.g. Bahcall et al. 1997, ApJ 479, 642; Hooper et al., 1997, ApJ 480, 95; McLure et al., 1998). Our advantage with Seyfert galaxies compared to QSOs is that the nuclei of host galaxies will be at least a factor of 10--100 fainter, so that systematic errors in the PSF subtraction, which limit the QSO studies, should provide much less of a problem. We will use the ``TINYTIM'' point spread function simulator for removal of the nuclear point source. We propose visits of one orbit per object, using WFPC2 with the F606W, F702W and F814W filters for target redshifts around 0.9, 1.4 and 1.9, respectively. This way we will obtain similar rest-frame wavelengths in the range 2700-3200 Angstrom \ for all objects. Two exposures of each object will be taken in order to remove cosmic ray events. We estimate a net exposure time of 1000-1500 s per target, which should allow to trace extended emission down to a surface brightness Mu ~ 26 mag arcsec^-2, enabling us to study the morpho lo gy of the host galaxy, detect po ssible companions and search for tidal tails and bridges. The total number of required WFPC2 visits is 21. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The Lockman Hole is more than 100 orbits in the CVZ, and we could benefit from such scheduling. However, we need low- background conditions to achieve the optimum sensitivity, therefore we do not put CVZ as a requirement.
