Abstract It is a curious fact that very little data are available to constrain the velocity field of galaxies in the local neighborhood (<= 500 km/sec). Although tremendous progress has been made in recent years in mapping the large- scale gravitational field (out to scales of cz ~ 10, 000 km/sec), the major impediment to constraining the local flow is the lack of a consistent set of distances to nearby galaxies. Locally the deviations from a pure Hubble flow have been predicted to be large and measurable, as much as 1 magnitude in distance modulus. Such an effect should be easily detectable or refutable. This proposal aims to provide distances to a sample of nearby galaxies selected to lie at to the maximum in the predicted infall model. We propose to measure the distances to a sample of 13 galaxies with cz < 550 km/sec, specifically chosen to search for a strong anisotropy in the local flow field. Although previously, no fast, accurate method w as available to measure distances to nearby galaxies, this situation has recently changed. Distances will be measured using the discontinuity in the luminosity function at the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), a method with a solid empirical calibration having a precision comparable to Cepheid variables, but which is much more efficient in terms of observing time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8199( 5) - 09/09/99 08:41 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have assembled an all-sky sample of 275 galaxies with LG frame radial velocities less than +550 km/sec. Their distribution on the sky (in Galactic co -ordinates) is shown in Figure 1. We are proposing to obtain TRGB distances to a subset of 13 of these galaxies well- distributed over the sky but concentrated at negative velocity contours, especially around l = 170-240 and b = 10-30. The peak flow predicted by the IRAS data is --300 km/sec; accordingly, we expect that those regions will have an observed cz = +500 km/sec but the galaxies there will in fact have distances corresponding to a pure Hubble- flow velocity of +800 km/sec, a relative DM of 1.0mag. This is a strong prediction of a large effect that should be easy to detect or refute. Measurements of even a few of these galaxies will be extraordinarily useful. Single-orbit, cosmic- ray split I-band observations are requested for each of our target galaxies. Fields have been chosen su ff iciently offset from the main body of each of the galaxies so as to avoid over-crowding as well as maximize the contribution of Population II halo stars, while simultaneously avoiding Population I contamination and reddening. Complementary V-band frames are to be obtained for 2 galaxies which are at low-Galactic latitude, where the foreground contamination and reddening are known to be high and/or uncertain and therefore need to be determined. The color-magnitude diagrams will allow us to discriminate the foreground component and measure the reddening directly for that line of sight. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None We have already obtained high quality imaging data with the LRIS instrument on the Keck telescope. These observations will set good constraints on TRGB distances to ~ 10 local galaxies, but we discovered again why the HST is esssential for probing beyond a distance of approximately 3 Mpc. Most of the Keck observations, although taken in 0.6" seeing, failed to adequately resolve the target galaxies into stars.
