Abstract We are proposing to observe four non-interacting double-lined spectroscopic binaries discovered in the R136 cluster by our Cycle 6 FOS spectroscopy (Massey & Hunter 1998, ApJ, 493, 180). These binaries are all of very early type (O3-4 + O3-8) and should prove to be of very high mass. These data will allow us to extend the empirical mass-luminosity relation to higher masses, providing crucial checks on stellar interior and atmosphere models. Examination of the WFPC2 archives reveals that at least three of the four systems undergo eclipses. We plan to obtain simultaneous spectroscopy and photometry for all four systems during a single 2- orbit visit. Fourteen such visits, over an interval of a few weeks, should provide direct measurements for the masses of eight of the highest mass stars ever analyzed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8217( 3) - 01/22/99 13:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ There are four binaries in the R136 cluster that will be observed in each 2- orbit visit: R136-038 (O3III(f*) + O8:, V=14.6), R136-039 (O4 V((f)) + O6:, V= 14.6), R136-042( O3 V + O3 V, V=14.6), and R136-077 (O3 V + O3 V, V=15.6). These four systems are all located within 15 arcseconds of the offset star and require a single acquistion. Our observing procedure will be start each visit by pointing to the center of the R136 cluster and taking a short (2.2 sec) image for photometry (using the 28 x 52 arcsec FOV with the long-pass filter). This exposure time was calculated to give us a S/N of 100 for our faintest object (if in eclipse), and still not staturate on the brightest star in the FOV. We will then go through the acquisition for our spectroscopy, by acquiring our isolated bright offset star Melnick 34, located within 12 arcseconds of each of our four targets. Since we are relying upon blind offsets to our 4 targets we've chosen to do a PEAKUP at our offset star despite our use of a 0.2 arcsecond slit. We will then observe each binary in turn, using the G430M grating, centered at Lambda 4451, in order to include HGamma through He II Lambda 4542, achieving a S/N of ~50 per 0.56 Angstrom spectral resolution element. This requires 1000 seconds each for our three brighter sources, and 1200 sec for our faintest target. We will end the visit by taking another short full FOV image for photometry. We fit all of this fun stuff into a single 2- orbit visit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Timing is critical not only in comedy (Penn & Teller 1997, How to Play in Traffic, p. 103), but also in obtaining optimal data from spectroscopic binaries. We have argued that (a) the periods we're interested in range from 1.5 to 20 days, and (b) that we are much more interested in obtaining good phase coverage during a single cycle, than in determining the period to high accuracy. We have run simulations based upon several different timing schemes, and have adopted a scheme used by Abi Saha for observing cepheids as part of the distance scale key project: our visits need to be separated in time by a geomtrical sequence, with intervals determined by A * B**(i-1) (i=1, 15) After many simulations, we have chosen A=0.50 days and B=1.175 days to give excellent phase coverage over the periods of interest, AND guarentee the the total time covered (25 days) is less than typical target visibility windows. The advantage of this scheme is that we obtain excellent phase coverage for ALL periods within the range of scientific interest (1.5-20 days). Although we realize this is going to complicate the life of the hard-working schedulers, it is necessary for the scientific success of the program: with just 15 visits we can have good phase coverage over the entire range of periods of scientific interest A "slop" of plus or minus 15% in the size of these intervals does not greatly affect the phase coverage, and we have explictly included this in our RPS2 submission.
