PI: Christian Knigge Columbia University in the City of New York CoI: Mr. David Zurek Space Telescope Science Institute N CoI: Dr. Michael Shara Space Telescope Science Institute N CoI: Dr. Knox Long Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We propose to carry out a deep, far-ultraviolet (FUV), time- resolved, spectroscopic search for faint cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the globular cluster (GC) 47 Tuc. We will use STIS to carry out FUV slitless spectroscopy and imaging of this cluster at 6 epochs for a total of 30 HST orbits. Since crowding is not a problem in the FUV, this will yield time- resolved spectra and photometry of all UV-bright objects in the cluster core. Our CV census will be both deep enough to be essentially complete M_V(limit) ~eq 11 spectroscopically and ~eq 13 photometrically and ``broad'' enough to involve all of the following CV characteristics:, (1) UV brightness;, (2) blue FUV spectral shape;, (3) strong C iv 1550 Angstrom emission;, (4) He ii 1640 Angstrom emission (especially in magnetic systems);, (5) short time-scale (~ minutes) variability (flickering, WD spin);, (6) intermediate time-scale (~ hours) variability (orbital variations);, (7) long time- scale (~ weeks) variability (dwar f nova eruptions)., Tidal capture theory predicts that we should discover 40 CVs in 47 Tuc and spectroscopically confirm 25. These numbers are large enough to allow the first definitive test of the theory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8219( 9) - 08/16/99 09:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ setcountersection0 noindent 1 Observing Plan vspace*0.5mm We propose to carry out a far-UV spectroscopic survey of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. We will observe the cluster for a total of 30 HST orbits, spread over 6 visits of 5 orbits each. As far as possible, successive observing epochs will be spaced several weeks apart. We will be able to take advantage of CVZ visibilities for 2 visits, with the spacing between these being subject to the constraints imposed by the CVZ windows. During each visit, the majority of time will be spent taking successive 10 min ACCUM exposures with the G140L (STIS/FUV-MAMA) grating in slitless mode. We will use the F25QTZ filter to block all light shortward of about 1450 Angstrom, because the geocoronal backgrounds due to LyAlpha and O i 1302 Angstrom must be suppressed in order to reach our intended limiting magnitudes. The remaining science time in each visit will be spent on a sequence of (mostly) 10 min STIS/F25QTZ FUV images and two 1 mi n STIS/CCD/50CCD exposures. The F U V images serve three purposes (see also following sections and Table 1): (i) they will allow us to search for short time-scale variability essentially all the way down to the spectroscopic detection limit; (ii) their sum will actually go somewhat deeper than our spectroscopy and should reveal additional CV candidates; (iii) they will allow us to assess and correct for any remaining crowding in the slitless FUV spectral images. The optical CCD images, on the other hand, will allow us to tie our data to existing WFPC/WFPC2 and FOC observations of 47 Tuc. Based on this strategy, we estimate that, in our two CVZ visits (96 min visibility/orbit), we will be spending 2*380 min total on slitless FUV spectroscopy, 2*39 min total on FUV imaging and 2*2 min total on optical imaging. The remaining time, 2*59 min is needed for overheads. The corresponding breakdown for our four non-CVZ visits (58 min visibility/orbit) is 4*180 min (slitless FUV spectroscopy), 4*35 min (FUV imaging), 4 *2 min (optical imaging) and 4*73 mi n (overheads). In our overhead calculations, we have allowed for guide star acquisitions and reacquisitions, all necessary instrument overheads, 1 POS-TARG and 2 WAVECALs per visit, as well as for taking 2 FUV images of the WAVECAL aperture per visit so that its position in the FOV can be determined. vspace*2mm noindent 2 Target Selection vspace*0.5mm 47 Tuc is ideally suited to our science goals and observing strategy: (i) It is one of the closest (m-M)_0=13.32 and least reddened E(B- V)=0.05 GCs. (ii) It lies in the wings of the CVZ, allowing efficient use of HST time.(iii) It does not have a blue horizontal branch. This is a critical requirement because blue horizontal branch stars (BHBSs) are extremely UV bright. Since the STIS/MAMA PSF is about an order of magnitude wider for slitless spectroscopy than for imaging, BHBSs could easily ``obscure'' almost all of the spectroscopic FOV at our intended detection limit (see below). This consideration immediately rules out the alternative candidate NGC 6752 as a target, for example. (iii) It is one of one of only two GCs for which clear, testable predictions of CV numbers based on state-of-the-art simulations are available (Di Stefano & Rappaport 1994). Scaling these predictions to other clusters inevitably introduces uncertainties of factors around 2-3. noindent 3 Exposure Time Calculations & Detection Limits vspace*0.5mm In Table 1, we list the S/N per resolution element we would achieve for several prototypical CVs at the distance and reddening of 47 Tuc; Figure 2 shows the corresponding simulated STIS spectra. U Gem is unusual among the prototypes, since it belongs to the minority (35\ lines. We have deliberately chosen to include U Gem in our exposure time calculations, since we nevertheless want to be able to detect such systems (they can still be classified as CVs by other means, such as variability and blue FUV continuum). Table 1 also gives the limiting magnitudes down to which the same objects could be detected spe ctr oscopically and photometricall y in the 30 HST orbits we request. These limiting magnitudes were calculated by scaling the prototype spectra down to the relevant detection limits (spectroscopy: 3.4* 10^-18 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 at 1500 Angstrom; imaging photometry: S/N=5). Our spectroscopic detection limit is equivalent to S/N=5 at 1500 Angstrom after rebinning into 5 Angstrom bins. Its definition is based on the fact that we want to be able to detect strong emission lines even in the faintest CV candidates. The limit therefore corresponds to a 5-Sigma line-to- continuum contrast for a 10 Angstrom wide ``rectangular'' line with 10 Angstrom equivalent width in the spectrum of an object at the detection limit. Figure 3 shows simulated STIS spectra of objects at the detection limit, taking the UV spectra of the prototypes as templates. Table 1 also contains the limiting absolute magnitudes down to which the prototypical CVs could be detected in a single, 10 minute ACCUM FUV image. These show that, in searchin g fo r short time-scale variabilit y, we will be able to rely on the full time resolution for all but the very faintest CV candidates. vspace*2mm noindent 4 FUV Crowding & Instrument Safety vspace*0.5mm Because our slitless spectra will be taken in the FUV, crowding will not compromise our ability to detect and isolate CVs. The great benefits of observing GCs in the FUV are illustrated in Figure 1. This compares V-band WFPC2/F555W images of the GC NGC 6681 with a STIS/MAMA- FUV/F25QTZ calibration image of the same cluster. (Note that this FUV exposure is much too short to be of use in a search for faint CVs in NGC 6681). To obtain a quantitative estimate of the effects of crowding on our CV survey, we note that, other than CVs themselves, only blue stragglers (BSs) are UV- bright and numerous enough in 47 Tuc to warrant serious consideration in this respect. (As already stated above, 47 Tuc was partly chosen for our program because it does not have a blue horizontal branch.) Paresce et al. (1991) find 21 UV- brigh t BSs in the FOC 22"*22" FOV and g ive positions and F140W fluxes for all of these. Based on other archival HST data, we know that there will only be 3 additional BSs in the STIS 25"*25" FOV. Given the quality of the STIS/FUV-MAMA imaging PSF, our FUV images will clearly not suffer from any crowding at all. To determine the impact of these 24 BSs on our slitless spectroscopy, the spectral PSF for this instrumental set-up is needed (this sets the width of a spectrum in the cross-dispersion direction on the detector). We extracted this PSF from a slitless STIS/FUV-MAMA G140L calibration spectrum in the archive. As expected, it is very similar to the published PSF for the widest STIS slit. The length of a spectrum in the dispersion direction is set by the spectral range covered and the appropriate LSF. Taking the number, positions and fluxes of the BSs in our field of view and the PSF and LSF for our instrumental set-up, we calculate that 60\ BSs when searching for CVs at the detection limit. For more ty pical C Vs (M_V~eq9), this fractio n rises to 90\ Obscuration of the FOV by BSs will not compromise the completeness of our survey for two reasons: (i) the area affected can be accurately determined; (ii) our deep FUV images will not be subject to this effect. In the event that crowding among CV candidates themselves should become significant -- a ``problem'' we would very much like to encounter. -- our FUV images will also permit us to isolate and separate even the faintest of these objects. As a by-product, our CV survey will yield time-resolved FUV magnitudes and medium resolution spectra of all BSs in the inner part of the core of 47 Tuc. These will be of considerable interest in their own right and further add to the scientific impact of our program. We have used the existing optical and UV HST images of 47 Tuc to verify that our observations will not violate either global or local STIS/MAMA brightness limits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- 47 Tuc lies in the wings of the continuous viewing zone (CVZ). There are two CVZ windows at the position of 47 Tuc with durations of 21 and 13 orbits, respectively. We should be able to fit at least two of our 5 orbit CVZ visits into these windows, and preferably one in each. Correspondingly, we have assumed 96 min visibilities for 2 of our visits, but only 58 min visibilities for the remaining 4. We stress that our observing plan will be flexible if there should be any difficulty in scheduling the CVZ visits. Given the abundant amount of HST orbits with visibilities between 58 min and 96 min at the cluster position, any necessary changes will result in very minor sensitivity reductions, if any. We have not scheduled separate visits for MAMA and CCD exposures, since only 2 minutes (out of each 5 obit visit) will be needed to obtain the CCD images we require. This strategy has been cleared with the STIS instrument team, and the necessary overheads have been accounted for.
