Abstract We propose to obtain a deep mosaic of WFPC2 images for the radio selected cluster around 3C336 at z=0.93. This proposal is the last part of a program to take large HST WFPC2 mosaics of distant clusters. We augment the HST mosaics of the clusters with extensive ground-based spectroscopy and imaging from the Keck, MMT, ESO-VLT, NTT, and WHT telescopes. The large areal coverage in high-z clusters is essential for studying the whole cluster population, and for determining radial gradients in their properties. We have the following scientific goals: (i) Use the Fundamental Plane of early-type galaxies to measure the evolution of M/L ratios out to z=1, putting strong constraints on the (star) formation epoch of early-type galaxies. (ii) Determine the density-morphology relation at z=1, and its evolution from z=0 to z=1. The radial distributions of starburst and post-starburst galaxies, as well as galaxy mergers, will be of particular interest. (iii) Use weak lensing to derive the detailed mass distribution of the cluster. 3C336 is well suited because it is a massive, high redshift cluster, with a measured velocity dispersion. It will provide great leverage on galactic evolutionary studies because of its high redshift. The fully processed mosaic of this cluster, covering 5*5 arcmin (1.5times1.5h^-2 Mpc), will be made available to the astronomical community, with our other cluster mosaics at z=0.33, 0.58, and 0.83. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8220( 8) - 08/30/00 09:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image an area of 5x5 arcmin, with 5 independent pointings which form a mosaic. This large area is essential for several reasons: (i) It will provide us with a large number of bright early-type galaxies for which we can measure the Fundamental Plane parameters. A large number is necessary to determine the scatter accurately, and to measure possible gradients in the cluster. In practice, we can routinely measure velocity dispersions down to Sigma = 100 km/s at a redshift of 0.8 to 1. (ii) It will provide us with the high resolution required to determine galaxy morphologies, and measure the morphological distribution of galaxies as a function of distance from the cluster center. We will obtain morphologies, length scales, bulge-to-disk ratios, etc. (iii) The large area is also needed to provide full information on the mass distribution through weak lensing. The area of the mosaic is well matched to the field size of spectrographs on ground based telescopes, so that structural parameters can be derived from HST images for most of the galaxies that are measured spectroscopically. For each WFPC2 field, an integration time of 8 orbits is required. This number is a compromise between the wish to obtain data of the same quality as we have obtained earlier on CL 1358 at z=0.33, and the wish to keep the integration time reasonable. It would require > 20 orbits to obtain data fully equivalent to our CL 1358 data, and data taken by other programs on the centers of clusters at intermediate redshifts. With 8 orbits, we can achieve our main scientific goals. The resulting S/N in the added images is approximately 10 at an effective radius. That will be just sufficient to find morphological details such as spiral arms, tidal features, etc. We will be able to find background galaxies to fainter than I=27. The number density of galaxies is expected to be around 150 per square arcmin at that magnitude limit. Hence we will have around 4000 background galaxies in the full mosaic, which will produce a very high resolution shear map. We will take the exposures in the F814W filter. It is the reddest, efficient filter, and is well matched to the redshift of the cluster. We have delineated the field in Figure 3. We will get good spatial coverage over the field with 5 different pointings. The center of the cluster has been imaged for 5 orbits in the F814W passband. These images have not been dithered with half pixel steps. We have found that this dithering is crucial to determine accurate length-scales of cluster members, and shapes of background galaxies (e.g., Hoekstra et al 1998). We therefore propose to observe the central position with another 4 orbits, instead of the 3 orbits needed to achieve a total of 8 orbits on the center. In this way we obtain a dataset which is dithered in a consistent way. In total, we need an integration time of 4 x 8 + 4 = 36 orbits. We intend to use STIS in parallel mode during our WFPC2 imaging. This layout of 5 pointings produces a nice, square, mosaic. It covers most of the length of the Keck spectrograph slit. The square shape will allow a good determination of the cluster mass through weak lensing. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our supporting observations made with ground based facilities are a crucial part of this program. We use MMT, Keck, WHT, ESO, ESO-VLT to obtain redshifts in our fields (with a goal of obtaining more than 200 redshifts per cluster field). Furthermore, we take deep ground based images from the optical to the IR, and take very high S/N spectra to measure the internal kinematics. These programs have been very successful, as has been demonstrated by our latest result on MS1054-3, where we have measured velocity dispersions for 30 galaxies, and redshifts for 186 galaxies in a single run. We will continue to obtain redshifts in our upcoming January Keck run, and will begin collecting spectroscopy in the 3C336 field. We expect that we can obtain more than 200 redshifts and 20 velocity dispersions in a single observing run. These supporting observations do not affect the scheduling of the HST observations.
