Abstract Study of the host galaxies of high redshift AGN is important if we are to attempt to investigate the population of high redshift galaxies which are not selected on the basis of luminous starburst activity. However, it is first important to establish how much the AGN affects the observed properties of the host galaxies even in samples of relatively weak AGN. We propose to use objects from a flux-limited sample of 7C radio sources, one of the first complete samples of radio sources with a flux limit more t han an order of magnitude fainter than 3C, to study the effects of weaker radio-loud AGN and their jets on the host galaxies of radio sources at z~ 1. This will complement studies already made or in progress of the much more radio- luminous 3C and 6C objec ts, and in particular we will be able to make a direct comparison with the 3C sample of Ridgway & Stockton (1997). Results from our ground- based study indicate that the alignment effect is still present in the 7C sample at z~ 0.7, but is probably weaker a nd on a smaller spatial scale than that in 3C. With HST data we can investigate the z~ 1 regime at high spatial resolution, and compare galaxies and quasars directly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8223( 3) - 10/25/99 11:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Comparing the results of Ridgway & Stockton (1997) with those of Best et al.\ (1997) it is clear that the mostly high surface brightness aligned features present in 3C radio galaxies can be well detected in single orbit integrations, such as those used by Best et al.. Our pilot study with the NOT indicates that the aligned features of the 7C radio sources should be on smaller spatial scales and are therefore, if anything, probably more compact than those of the 3C sources. In addition, the median total ma gnitudes of the 3C and 7C radio galaxies are the same to within the statistical uncertainty (Lacy et al.\ 1998b). However, the results of Ridgway & Stockton (1997) showed that the reduction in signal:noise resulting from a PSF subtraction was typically l arge enough that extra integration time is required on the quasars to reach the same limiting surface brightness. We have therefore elected to observe our radio galaxies for one orbit each, and our quasars for two. We will observe in exposures of about 90 0s to ease cosmic-ray rejection, and dither to recover some higher-resolution spatial information. With total integration times of up to 2700s per galaxy (depending on orbital visibility), we expect to obtain about a 3Sigma per pixel detection of emission with a surface brightness of 24 mag arcsec^-2 in V-band. In some cases, we will use small bits of time to take short exposures on nearby bright stars to monitor the PSF, but we also plan to use 1 orbit to obtain systematic PSF images in both filters on a suitable star. We will use the 7 e^-/DN gain setting to obtain the lowest effective read noise. Our exposures will typically result in ADC saturation for a few pixels near the peaks of our brighter quasars. Such saturation is of little practical importa nce; we have spent a lot of effort on trying various approaches to PSF subtraction and/or deconvolution, and we find empirically that there is little hope of detecting host-galaxy structure with the WFC within the central 0.2-- 0.3 arcsec radius region in any case. The sample is constrained by the available WFPC2 filters and our desire to avoid having strong lines in the bandpass, so that we can accurately determine extended continuum structure. Our bandpass will be centered near a rest-frame wavelength of 3200 Angstrom.
