Abstract Conventional wisdom holds that the masses of Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) in globular clusters (GCs) are significantly larger than the turnoff mass. We have, for the first time, supported this theoretical claim by directly measuring the mass of the blue straggler BSS--19 in the core of 47 Tuc to be M = 1.7 +/- 0.4 M(sun), nearly twice that of the oldest core- hydrogen burning cluster star (Shara et al. 1997, ApJ, 489, L59). Observations reveal that the BSS in Galactic open clusters have low rotation velocities. However, we also have found that BSS--19 is rotating rapidly, with a measured projected rotation velocity v sin i = 155 +/- 55 kms. We propose to obtain STIS spectroscopy of 20 BSS in each of the GCs 47 Tuc, M 3, and NGC 6752, in order to measure accurate masses and rotation rates. The mass distributions will test the most basic assumption about BSS, namely, that massive stars with lifetimes <= 10^9 yr are continuously forming (probably by coalescence) in the oldest (\gta 10^10 yr) objects in the universe. Together, the mass and rotation velocity distributions will distinguish between collisional and close binary coalescence scenarios. Our proposed observations will definitively constrain theories of BSS formation in GCs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8226( 5) - 09/15/99 10:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To accurately measure BSS masses, we require spectral coverage from 3500-- 5500Angstrom at a spectral resolution of \twid 7Angstrom\ FWHM and a signal-to- noise ratio (S/N) of 50 per Lambda-pixel. STIS first-order long-slit spectroscopy using the G430L grating satisfies these requirements. The spectral coverage allows simultaneous analysis of the slope of the Paschen continuum, the size of the Balmer jump, and the detailed shapes of the Balmer line profiles. We have shown that in FOS spectra, this analysis results in highly precise estimates of the atmospheric parameters T(eff)\ and \logg. The atmospheric parameters specify the Eddington flux at the stellar surface. Combined with the distance to the cluster, taken from the literature, and a measurement of the stellar apparent magnitude, taken from archival HST WFPC2 images, the stellar mass can be calculated. For BSS--19, we found M = 1.7 +/- 0.4 M(sun), with 2/3 of the quoted uncertainty being due to the uncertainty in the cluster distance modulus. The FOS spectrum has a spectral resolution of 3Angstrom\ FWHM and a (S/N) of 30 per Lambda-pixel. Our proposed STIS observations, with increased spectral coverage and higher S/N at somewhat lower resolution, will achieve at least the same precision in the measured parameters. To accurately measure BSS rotation rates, higher resolution spectra are required (\twid 1.5Angstrom\ FWHM) at a more modest S/N of 30 per Lambda- pixel. STIS first-order spectroscopy using the G430M grating is ideal for our purposes. Figure 2 shows synthetic spectra of the higher Balmer lines. The theoretical spectra have been rotationally broadened with velocities v \sin i = 100--300 kms, in steps of 100 kms. The high Balmer absorption line cores are seen to be highly sensitive diagnostics of stellar rotation. We have analyzed rotating synthetic spectra with artificially added noise, which demonstrates that at our proposed resolution and S/N, rotation velocities can be measured with a precision of 30 kms. This is the precision required to differentiate between the rotation velocities predicted by coalescence of primordial binaries (up to 400 kms) vs. coalescence in stellar captures/collisions (at most a few tens of kms). Our cluster targets range in magnitude from V = 15.5 to V = 18, all at very low reddening. We have used the Cycle 8 release of the STIS Exposure Time Calculator to estimate exposure times using the G430M and G430L gratings, 52*0.2 slit, S/N of 30 and 50 per Lambda-pixel for the G430M and G430L gratings, respectively, using as input Kurucz model spectra having spectral types ranging from A0V to F2V. We will bin by two pixels in the spectral direction with the G430M grating; no binning will be used with the G430L grating. In the G430M grating, typical exposure times range from 1200 s for V = 15.5 to 8000 s for V = 18, where for the fainter stars we accept the S/N penalty for the shorter exposure times. The effect on the rotational velocity precision is modest, worsening it only from 30 to 40 kms. Thus, for the brighter clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 6752 (both of which are are in the CVZ -- do we need CVZ scheduling? NO. We can observe both these clusters in one orbit per visit even without it.) the short exposure times for the faintest BSS will require one orbit per visit. For these two clusters, the exposure times will be lengthened so that the spectra will realize higher S/N, between 40 and 60, a not unwelcome compromise. For M3, the fainter BSS will require 3 orbits per visit. How many BSS can we observe per visit? Figure 3 shows 6 possible slit positions superimposed on the locations of BSS we have identified in archival WFPC2 images. The thick black lines represent the actual length and width of the 52*0.2 slit. A minimum of 2 BSS of course can always be placed within the slit. In fact, alignments of 3 BSS are common, and even 4 BSS at a time are possible. In Figure 3, the slit positions were placed by eye with a ruler. In subsequent Phase II preparations, we will optimize the slit positions by testing all pairs of stars which include 3^rd, 4^th, or more bonus BSS on the slit. For our current purposes, we take the average number of BSS well-placed in the slit per visit to be 3, for a total of 7 visits per cluster to observe 20 BSS in each. We note that adequate time is available in each visit to accomodate all overheads, including guide star acquisition, target acquisition, CCD flush and readout times, and grating changes. We do not require additional wavelength calibration exposures. The total number of required orbits is then 7*1 (47 Tuc) + 7*1 (NGC 6752) + 7*3 (M3) = 35.
