Abstract About 20 bright Seyfert 1 galaxies are now known to have very broad (up to 100, 000 km s^-1) Fe KAlpha emission lines near 6.4 keV. The line profiles can be well described by a model involving Fe fluorescence in an accretion disk within 20 gravitational radii of the hole. The line profile is sensitive to the metric in this region and attempts have been made to derive the spin of the black hole for the galaxy with the best measured profile (MCG--6--30--15). This spin measurement is controversial because of the relatively poor quality of the line profile, but soon to be launched X-ray missions (AXAF, XMM and ASTRO-E) will provide profiles of sufficient quality for spin determination. The goal of the present proposal is to measure black hole masses for a small sample of these galaxies. Knowledge of both mass and spin provides a complete description of the hole and gives many benefits, including the Eddington ratio, the influence of the hole on stars, the variability timescale of the inner disk, the radiative efficiency of accretion, the source of power for radio jets and the history of accretion by the hole. We propose STIS spectroscopy of the disk of ionized gas we have recently discovered in MCG--6--30-- 15 to measure, or obtain upper limits to, the mass of its black hole, and WFPC2 imaging to search for similar such disks in 7 other galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8240( 6) - 04/16/99 13:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ 1. Long Slit Spectroscopy For MCG--6--30--15, we propose to obtain spectra with 3 parallel slits (indicated on Fig. 1) which will cover the very elongated nebulosity. As the nebulosity is of high excitation, we shall use G430M (to cover HBeta and OIIILambda4959, 5007) with the 0.2 arc sec wide slit. Using the values for S_lambda^d, average sky background, dark rate, and read noise given in the STIS Handbook V2.0, we simulated the STIS spectrum of MCG--6--30-- 15 from our WFPC2 O III and F547M images (see Fig. 1) assuming the emission line widths and ratios from ground- based spectra (Busko & Steiner 1988; Shuder & Osterbrock 1981). We find count rates at O III Lambda 5007 (in units of e^- s^- 1 pix^-1) of 0.38 and 1.4 * 10^-2 at the nucleus and R = 1'', respectively. With an integration time of 2200 sec, the S/N will be 29/pix at the nucleus and ~ 9/bin at R = 1'' (where we will bin by four pixels along the slit). A simulation of the STIS spectrogram of MCG-6-30-15 (central slit) is shown in Fig. 2. High S/N is required near the nucleus to resolve any kinematic sub- components that may exist, as was found in M84 by Bower et al. (1998). In view of the importance of the central slit spectrum and the acquisition overheads for this first spectrum, we request two orbits for it. The two off-nuclear spectra will be taken next and we ask for 1 orbit each, for a total of 4 orbits on MCG-- 6--30--15. begintabularlcccccc TABLE 1 & multicolumn6cProperties of Proposed Galaxies, noalign Galaxy & multicolumn6cProperty, & Morphology & z & B_mboxT^0 & M_mboxB & Brightness^a & Nucleus^b, noalign NGC 3783 & (R')SB(r)a & 0.009 & 12.04 & -21.12 & 15.5 & 17.43 , Mrk 766^c & (R')SB(s)a:& 0.012 & 13.79 & -19.89 & 16.1 & 17.13 , MCG-6-30-15^d & E/S0 & 0.008 & 13.33 & -19.38 & 16.0V & 17.0V , IC 4329A & SA0+ & 0.016 & 13.67 & -20.47 & 16.2 & 16.91 , NGC 4593 & (R)SB(rs)b & 0.009 & 11.48 & - 21.45 & 16.4 & 17.24 , NGC 5548 & (R')SA(s)0/a & 0.017 & 12.81 & -21.45 & 16.2 & 16.55 , NGC 6814 & SAB(rs)bc & 0.006 & 11.32 & -19.96 & 15.8 & 16.29 , NGC 7469 & (R')SAB(rs)a & 0.017 & 12.64 & -21.26 & 15.4 & 16.38 , noalign , endtabular ^a R magnitude (arc sec)^-2 of the starlight near the nucleus of the galaxy (measured from archival images - see Malkan et al. 1998), except for MCG--6--30--15 which is V magnitude (arc sec)^-2 from our F547M image. ^b Magnitude of nuclear point source (radius =0arcsec09) in HST snapshot survey (Malkan et al. 1998), except for MCG--6--30--15 which is V magnitude from our F547M image. Emission-Line Imaging Each galaxy will be imaged in 4 filters with the WFPC2 (old WPFC-1 images are not sufficient for our purposes since the circumnuclear morphology is lost in the extended PSF of the bright nuclear point source). The filters are chosen to include OIIILambda5007, HAlpha + NIILambdaLambda6548, 6584 and their adjacent continua. The on-band images will be taken with the Linear Ramp Filters at the appropriate wavelength. The 13 arc secs field of view permitted by the Linear Ramp Filters is ideal for these compact nebulosities. Off-band images will be obtained with F547M and F814W. Using this medium- and wide-band filter reduces the off-band exposure times to less than 1/10 of the on-band, and allows most of the available observing time in a single orbit to be devoted to the on-band images. At the low redshifts being observed, contamination of F547M by OIIILambda5007 is negligible. We plan to dither the individual sub-exposures by non-integer pixel shifts to minimize the effects of the undersampled PSF. Since the (narrow) lines are always narrower than the passbands of the filters, the number of electrons/pixel is: Signal = N = 2.3x10^12 t(secs) (QT) Lambda (Angstrom ) B(erg cm^-2 s^-1 pixel^-1) The number of electrons of noise/pixel is: Noise = (N + (RN)^2)^0.5 where RN is the read noise. The emission- line fluxes were mostly taken from Whittle's (1992) compilation. To calculate the integrated line brightness, B, we assumed these fluxes referred to a 1 (arc sec)^2 area. In fact 1) the lines are spatially extended in ground based observations for almost all galaxies and 2) the lines are likely to be concentrated in knots in the HST images. Effect 1) tends to decrease the brightness and 2) to increase it, so our assumption may not be too bad. QT was taken from the updated information in the WFPC2 handbook. When more than one emission line is in the filter bandpass (i.e. HAlpha + NII LambdaLambda 6548, 6584 in the red filters), the products (QT) x B were summed. Demanding a Signal/Noise ~eq 50 in the line(s) yields the needed total exposure times (the ``first'' exposure time). To calculate the exposure time which would lead to saturation by the central point continuum source (the ``second'' exposure time), we have used the small aperture magnitude (radius = 0.09 arc secs) obtained by Malkan et al. (1998) from a survey of Seyfert galaxies though filter F606W. All of our seven galaxies were observed in this survey (for two - NGC 4593 and NGC 6814 - we have measured the nuclear magnitude from the archival image) and five are classified as ``Saturated Seyfert 1'' (SS1) nuclei, so the magnitudes (listed in Table 1) should be treated with care. Using these magnitudes, we calculated the exposure times to give a mean number of electrons/pixel = 10^4 in the point continuum source, which may be compared with the saturation level of 2.7 * 10^4 electrons. For cases in which this second exposure time is shorter than the first, we shall take a number of individual exposures through each filter with this shorter exposure time (to ensure we have images in which the nucleus is unsaturated) in addition to longer ones taken to optimise detection of fainter line emission. The range of OIII Lambda5007 fluxes in this imaging sample is 1.4 -- 13 * 10^- 13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and their average OIII Lambda5007 flux is 6 x 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 The assumed average brightness is then 6 x 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (WF pixel)^-1. In a 10 min exposure, we expect N = 1650 elects (WF pixel)^-1 and noise = 40 elects, for a signal to noise of 40. The S/N will be higher for HAlpha + NII due to the higher throughput and ramp filter transmission. We already know from experience (project GO 6419 and earlier) that such exposure times give splendid line images of these bright Seyferts, and thus ask for 1 orbit per galaxy for a total of 7 orbits. As described in the text, these Seyfert 1 galaxies with strong, broad Fe KAlpha emission will be top priority objects for all of the next generation X-ray missions (AXAF, XMM, ASTRO-E). In fact, MCG--6--30--15 is already scheduled for a 125 ksecs GTO observation in the first year of AXAF, one of the longest integrations on any source. We have recently obtained (Nagar et al. 1998) high sensitivity and resolution radio maps of MCG--6--30--15, Mrk 766, IC 4329A and NGC 5548 with the VLA in `A' configuration at 8.4 GHz (resolution about 0.25 arc secs). Earlier VLA `A' configuration observations at 6 and 20 cm (resolutions about 0.4 and 1.2 arc secs) are also available to us in digital format (Ulvestad & Wilson 1984a, b, 1989). We will compare these images with the HST images. MCG--6--30--15 contains a very low power and unusually compact (< 16 pc) nuclear radio source for a Seyfert galaxy, which no doubt accounts for the absence of a jet-driven narrow line region.
