Abstract Supernovae reveal the last stages of stellar evolution, create the chemical history of the Universe, energize the interstellar gas, and occupy the center of attention for the extragalactic distance scale and cosmology. HST can make unique contributions to understanding supernovae, as the SINS program has shown. Now HST is better than ever for this work: STIS is ideal for spatially-resolved observations of SN 1987A, where a rapidly developing encounter between the fast-moving debris and the stationary inner ring has just begun. Our approach for Cycle 8 is the intensive study of a few selected objects beyond SN 1987A: SN 1993J in M81, SN 1998bu, SN 1998S and a Target-of-Opportunity observation of a bright, new supernova to be discovered during Cycle 8. We aim to explore the UV emission from supernovae, exploit the spatial resolution of HST, and press the late-time observations of supernovae into uncharted territory. The SINS team provides extensive ground-based support and analytic power to create an effective observing program that uses HST to help understand the final, most violent stage of stellar evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8243( 38) - 11/01/00 00:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ There are 5 targets to observed in cycle 8. SN 1987A, SN 1993J, SN 1998S, SN 1998bu, and a supernova to be yet discovered. SN 1987A: wfpc2: visit #1 we certainly would like to get the CVZ, if for some reason it is not available, we will add EARTH AVOIDANCE ANGLE 16. visit #26 will be sometime in 2000. STIS: There are 2 big visit blocks with STIS. Visits 10, 12, 13, 18 all at orientation 74 degrees and Visits 20, 21, 22, 23 all at orientation 310 degrees. If we can't get all the visits scheduled we will add a priority to the visits and/or use SCHED to keep the orientation. The angle is very important, we would prefer to trim the exposure time by 10% than change the angle. When the servicing mission is announced we will contact STScI to discuss any scheduling conflicts for our observations. SN 1993J, SN 1998S and SN 1998bu are all straight forward. SN 1999XX the supernova to be named later, will have the same sequence as our very sucessful cycle 7 observations. ASAP (first available SMS). The second visit +10-20 days later, we would perfer 10 days . then a third visit +40-60 days. from the phase I proposal: SN 1987A Spectra of the interaction region in SN 1987A with STIS/G140L will be obtained at 4 locations, using the 0.2'' slit as illustrated in Fig. 3. Cycle 7 observations show that at least 5 orbits at each location will be needed to get good signal-to-noise on the fascinating emission at 15 000 km/s from the interaction zone. We want to map it for comparison with the ongoing radio observations and future AXAF observations. One problem we encountered is distinguishing redshifted Ly$\alpha$ from NV emission. We hope to solve this by measuring the H$\alpha$ profile and subtracting. Spectra of the debris will be obtained at H$\alpha$ with STIS/G750M to map its kinematics, using the 0.1'' slit. This will couple directly to the explosion physics and also provide information for subtraction of the hydrogen emission profile. A complete job will take three position angles. A S/N of ~10 can be achived with 3 orbits in each position. We also want to get a complete spectrum of the emission from the debris. Once per cycle is not excessive for this. 9 orbits. STIS spectra of the hot spot, with the medium resolution gratings, will allow us to diagnose the shock that is crushing this gas. We should be able to find the shock velocity, see the non- equilibrium effects in regions of different density, and derive some properties of the shock geometry. 2 orbits SINS member Nino Panagia and his students have been industrious in using the parallel images obtained during our spectroscopic visits to provide a deep multi-band survey of this interesting segment of the LMC. We would like to continue this practice, which provides information on the stellar population and star formation history of this region. Our imaging program will provide information on the debris luminosity and extent, eruption of new hot spots, and recombination of the rings. If done in the CVZ, a complete set that connects with our earlier observations takes 6 orbits. One set of observations will suffice for most purposes, but the reconaissance for eruption of new hot spots should be done again late in Cycle 8, which takes 2 additional orbits. SN1993J We know from experience the UV spectrum will take 6 orbits if we can do it in the CVZ as in Cycle 7. SN1998S Although we have less information than for 93J, this should be comparably bright. We will know more when we complete our Cycle 7 observations in early 1999. 6 orbits SN 1998bu To get a point where ground-based observations are futile, at an age of about 600 days, we need two orbits to get well-measured points on the light curve in V. Target of Opportunity We have developed a very effective set of observations which worked well for 92A, 93J, 94I, and 98S to gather unique spectra in the UV. We observe at the earliest available moment, at age 1 month and again at age 1 year. At the latest time, we image in BVR and I to examine the neighborhood of the explosion and to get a solid point on the late-time lightcurve. All of this, including effective target acquisition schemes, has been worked out in detail during Phase 2 for earlier cycles. 17 orbits Real Time Justification ----------------------- When SN 1987A is in the CVZ, we can make the most efficient use of the spacecraft in gathering our image data (which doesn't require a special roll angle). The STIS mapping has too many contraints to be accomodated in this way. SN 1993J also spends time in the CVZ, and this is a great help in getting the long exposure UV spectra. Our Target-of-Opportunity program would trigger for a supernova brighter than 14 mag, or fainter if there is also a gamma ray localization. The probability of having a 14 mag supernova in Cycle 8 is near unity-- especially considering the outstanding success of the automated supernova search being led by SINS-member Filippenko at Lick. However, we have been scupulous in applying high standards to our targets: avoiding crowded fields and obscuration by dust, while obtaining excellent astrometry and diagnostic spectroscopy from sites in Arizona, Texas, California, Chile, and Australia. Early observations are best for studying the UV emission from supernovae, which declines rapidly. Observations within 5 days of notification would be adequate. If a supernova is discovered in the Local Group, a more extensive program will be proposed by the SINS team for Director's Discretion time.
