Abstract We propose to use WFPC2 for a gravitational lensing survey of the central regions of 16 X-ray luminous clusters from a statistically complete sample. Our sample is based on cluster detections in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and is representative of the population of rich clusters at z~ 0.2. The proposed WFPC2 survey will, for the first time, provide an unbiased view of strong lensing (arcs, multiply imaged systems and arclets) by such systems. Specifically, the strong lensing features and the shear field in the central regions of these clusters will be used to reconstruct accurately the mass distribution from galaxy to cluster scales. The resulting mass maps will be compared with HRI and ASCA observations in order to probe the dynamical state of, and the prevalence of substructure in, the cluster core. In combination with other indicators of the clusters' evolutionary state (e.g. the presence of a stable cooling flow) our study will provide the first coherent picture of mass accretion onto clusters at an epoch where cluster growth through mergers is expected to be common. Furthermore, the accurate mass models resulting from this survey will allow us to probe fundamental properties of the distant galaxy population, as well as provide new natural lenses for observations at longer wavelengths. Finally, the proposed observations will allow us to investigate the morphological mix and evolution of the cluster galaxy population. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8249( 11) - 10/20/99 10:26 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The best samples of X-ray luminous clusters with z~0.2 come from the ROSAT All- Sky Survey. In particular, the XBACS sample of Ebeling et al.\ (1996) provides a list of clusters found in both the ROSAT and Abell cluster catalogs. Our sample contains all 19 XBACS clusters north of delta=- 20^degrees, within the redshift range 0.17= 6 * 10^44 , erg s^-1 (0.5-2.0 keV) --- the expected central mass is therefore M(r<500 kpc) >= 2 * 10^14 M_\odot (Smail et al 1997). Note that the XBACS sample is incomplete at redshifts z>0.25--0.3 due to the incompleteness of the Abell catalog but is 90\ the region where cluster-lenses are most efficient ( e.g. Natarajan & Kneib 1997). The wide luminosity range allows us to probe a variety of X-ray morphologies thus avoiding a bias in favour of strong cooling flow clusters. The reddening limit is adopted to maintain a uniform depth to the resulting WFPC2 images and also to ensure that the number of bright stars in the frames is kept to a minimum. A declination cut of delta>-20^degrees was adopted to ensure observability with the Keck Telescopes (half of our sample is also observable with the VLT). Three of the 19 clusters in our complete sample have been or will be observed to an adequate depth using WFPC2: A 1689, A 2218 and A 2219, and so we remove them from our list. This leaves us with 16 massive clusters featuring a wide range of X-ray morphologies (Fig. 1) in a narrow and well-defined redshift range. Our observational strategy is similar to that successfully adopted for the Cycle 4 A 2218 observations discussed in Kneib et al.\ (1996) in which we discovered 5 new multiply imaged background galaxies (these were unidentified in even the best ground- based images of this well-studied cluster) and used these to construct what is arguably the most accurate mass model of a cluster lens so far achieved (Kneib et al.\ 1996). The observations totalled 3 orbits in F702W which is the most sensitive filter-telescope combination. The limiting magnitude reached is R(F702W)=25.5 (corresponding to the 50\ in galaxy counts), and we observe ~ 235 arclets that were use to compute the shear field. We have confirmed the reliability of our mass model for this cluster by using it to predict the redshifts for faint arclets visible in the WFPC2 frame. Subsequent ultra-deep spectroscopic observations of the brighter examples (Ebbels et al.\ 1996, 1998) have confirmed the accuracy of the predicted redshifts in all cases and hence give strong support to the mass model on which they were based. Furthermore, we will use our STIS parallel images (using the 50CCD `Clear' filter) of outer fields to do a `statistical' analysis of the shear at ~5 arcmin (~ 1.2 h^-1_50 Mpc) from the cluster center, and check how it compares to what we expect for isothermal or NFW mass models. No special calibration exposures are required. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. None -- all supporting observations have been undertaken.
