Abstract Recent progress in understanding the kinematics of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) in Seyfert galaxies has identified three distinct components --- a high velocity nuclear flow, a more widespread gravitational component, and a jet-accelerated component. In this proposal, we aim to isolate and study the jet-accelerated component. A ground based long-slit survey shows that the kinematic signature of jet interactions while detectable, is usually confused by the presence of the other two components. Higher spatial resolution is essential if we are to isolate the jet- perturbed gas. We have selected 7 Seyferts with linear (jet-like) radio structure, pre-existing HST emission line images, and some indication (kinematic and/or morphological) of a jet perturbed component. Using STIS, we will obtain one (or in some cases, two) long slit exposures of the OIII Lambda5007, taken along the radio axis and through the brighter emission features. This will allow us to zero in on the jet-acce lerated gas --- isolating and mea suring its strength, location, and velocity field, all of which can be used to test the nature of the jet-gas interaction. In some objects we will also obtain a short G430L exposure to study the excitation conditions in the jet. In the big picture, jet interactions are an important and widespread astrophysical phenomenon. Unlike other contexts, the pervasive distribution of line emitting gas in Seyfert nuclei provides the perfect `highlight' with which to study this interaction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8253( 9) - 08/03/99 09:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We use STIS/CCD and the G430M grating with 0.2 arcsec slit. The spectral slice of 286 Angstrom is chosen to include the OIII Lambda4959, 5007 lines and, depending on available tilt, HBeta. The velocity resolution of 40 km s^-1 is ideal for resolving the OIII profile and deblending different velocity components. (Note that the resolution of G430L is usually too low to achieve this). For half our sample, a single slit covers all the emission of interest, and for these we also aquire a short exposure using G430L to ascertain the excitation along the jet. For the other objects, emission away from the jet axis may be important, and we sacrifice some of the exposure time to aquire a short second slit exposure. In Mkn 34, the line and radio emission are sufficiently extended and bright to warrent a second orbit to aquire three parallel slits, with a short G430L exposure down the central one. Exposures : \ \ Our first approach has been to establish that a single orbit gives adequate S/N for a single slit. Acquisition requires 6 minutes for guide stars and typically 6 minutes for STIS aquisition (our objects have bright compact nuclei). We do not need a peakup because we can accept 0.1 arcsec accuracy of slit placement. We have 5 minutes for the first CCD exposure and 1 minute overhead for a CRSPLIT. Thus, we have 18 minutes overhead in an orbit, leaving about 36 minutes for a single exposure. We have inspected all emission line images and estimated (or taken from the literature) the OIII surface brightness. Since the emission is often clumpy, the surface brightness can be gratifyingly high just where we suspect the jet accelerated gas to be. Further away from these knots, the emission can be somewhat weaker. As an example of a typical case, NGC 5929 has weak distributed flux at 4 * 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2, rising to 5 * 10^-13 over the brighter knots. Typical continuum fluxes ~ 1 arcsec off nucleus are ~ 3 * 10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 arcsec^-2. If we assume this emission is spread over 5 Angstrom and we integrate over 2 spatial pixels (0.1 arcsec), then in 30 minutes (CRSPLIT) we derive S/N ~ 6 per pixel for the weakest flux, rising to 30 per pixel right on the peak knot of emission. Thus, over the peak knots we should easily be able to detect extended wings on the OIII profile, while we should be able to get modest profile information even over the weaker parts of the emission region. (Note, STIS slit exposures in Figure 1 were each 30 mins). Target Aquisition : \ \ Essentially all objects have well defined nuclei as seen in existing (post-COSTAR) HST images. We are confident, therefore, of being able to aquire them easily using the `diffuse' option. For most cases, we will not need a further peakup, because we can tolerate a 0.1 arcsec accuracy (typical emission knots are a few tenths of an arcsec across). For those objects which we feel need a peak up, we simply tolerate an exposure of ~ 25 mins instead of ~ 30 mins. Orbit estimation : \ \ As described above, 6 objects require a single slit position with 30 min exposure, while one requres a second orbit for an additional slit and slitless exposure. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None, though we require accurate slit orientation. If awarded HST time we would obtain new VLA images for a number of the sources with only early VLA maps available. We recently reobserved Mkn 34 at 2cm and 3.6cm in A configuration. We would apply for time using the same configuration for those others in the sample without such existing maps.
