Proposal For 3. Cycle GO 8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Investigators Contact? PI: Michael Brown California Institute of Technology ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract The large number of collisions thought to have taken place in the primordial Kuiper belt suggests that many Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) could have suffered binary- forming collisions similar to that which formed the Pluto -- Charon binary. Detection of such KBO binaries would allow us to measure KBO masses, would help us to understand the past collisional environment of the Kuiper belt, and would give a context to the otherwise unique-seeming formation of the Pluto -- Charon binary. We propose a STIS CCD search for binarity in three known KBOs. The three we target include the largest (1996 TO66), the closest (1996 TP66), and the most eccentric (1996 TL66) known. We have performed deep searches around each of these KBOs with the Keck telescope and have not detected distant satellites; any satellites must therefore be closer than about ~0.5 arcseconds. Collisionally formed satellites analogous to Charon should be at distances of only ~0.2 arcseconds; their detection will require t he resolving power and sensitivity of HST. We have carefully constructed an observing program optimized to detect any such very close satellites. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8258( 5) - 08/07/00 14:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations searching for KBO binarity need to be carefully optimized to maximize the likelihood of success. We have examined choices of instrument and tracking strategies and have concluded that the best method is to observe as close as possible to the KBO stationary point and to use the bare STIS CCD to take short exposures without tracking the KBO. We find that this observation strategy is optimal for resolving close binaries. The strategy is not optimal for finding more distant (>1 arcsecond) faint satellites, but our deep Keck searches have already precluded such satellites. We discuss the relevant issues below. renewcommand\topfraction1. renewcommand\textfraction.0 renewcommand\floatpagefraction0.8 beginitemize item Tracking vs. not tracking. By tracking the KBO, we could maximize sensitivity by taking long exposures and avoiding the time and readout noise overhead associated with multiple short exposures. However, such a method would cause several problems. First, b in aries with small separations will have moved by ~20 degrees during the course of an orbit, smearing the resolved image of the binary in long exposures. Second, trailed stars might intersect the KBO location, rendering the entire long exposure worthless. And third, any inaccuracies in the KBO ephemeris would cause the KBO image to smear. If, instead, we observe near the KBO stationary point (when typical motions are ~0.4 arcsec/hr) and obtain exposures short enough that the KBO moves no more than about 0.5 pixels (~3.75 minutes) then the binary is essentially stationary during the exposure, data when stars closely intersect the KBO can be modeled or discarded, and KBO orbital inaccuracies are unimportant. Such a method sacrifices sensitivity far from the object for increased sensitivity within a few tenths of an arcsecond. item STIS vs. PC. The PC has the smallest pixels, allowing the finest sampling of the PSF. However the STIS CCD pixels are only 10\ larger, and the presenc e of Lyot stops inside STIS should reduce the wings of the PSF significantly compared to that of the PC. We have checked plots of encircled energies for all imaging setups and verified this expectation. enditemize \medskip noindent Observing strategy From these considerations, we have constructed the following observing strategy. Each KBO will be observed at its stationary point with the STIS bare CCD, filling an orbit with multiple short exposures which allow the object to move by no more than 0.5 pixels per exposure. The observation will then be repeated ~1 day later. The KBO will have moved a sufficient distance (~10 arcseconds) that the background at the previous location can be carefully measured and subtracted, ensuring no contamination of the measurement. In addition, observations 1 day later will allow confirmation of any detected binarity and a first estimate of the orbital period and therefor masses of the objects. beginfigure begincenter <=avevmode hbox \epsfxsize= 6. in epsffilesn.eps endcenter captionLimits to the detection of KBO satellites. In each case, we have calculated the one orbit detection limits based on photon + read noise assuming multiple short exposures during which the KBO would move by no more than 0.5 pixels (3.75 minutes for TL66, 7.5 minutes for TO66, and 2.5 minutes for TP66). Close to the primary, the noise is dominated by the wings of the PSF, further from the primary the noise is dominated by CCD readout. The short dashed lines show the expected systematic limits; they dominate over the noise limits close to the KBO. A diamond shows the expected magnitude and separation of a Charon-analog secondary around each of the KBOs. In all cases, such a secondary would be easily detected. endfigure \medskip noindent Detection limits We have estimated the expected detection limits for these observations in two ways. First, we use the measured STIS bare CCD PSF to model the photon-noise background due to the presence of the p ri mary KBO as a function of binary separation and include the noise due to multiple readouts. Figure 1 shows the expected 5Sigma detection limits as a function of binary separation. Near the primary, we are dominated by photon noise in the wings of the PSF. Further from the primary, we become dominated by read noise. To include systematic errors due to imperfect PSF subtraction, we have taken the values from Table 7.2 of the WFPC2 manual (no similar information exists for STIS), which gives approximate PSF subtraction artifact magnitudes and magnitude limits as a function of distance from an object. For 3Sigma detections, this table suggests the magnitude limit for the secondary will be m_ primary+3.5 at a radius of 0.1 arcsecond and m_ primary+7.4 at a radius of 0.3 arcseconds. We have included these limits in Figure 1. In all cases, we are dominated by systematic errors at small separations for which we are attempting to optimize, thus, our choice of short exposures does n ot significantly impact our detection limit. We expect that these observations will robustly detect binaries with a mass ratio as high as 300, a factor of 25 higher than the Pluto -- Charon mass ratio. Real Time Justification ----------------------- For best PSF determination and highest sensitivity, these KBOs must be observed when their motions are the smallest. Each KBO will have such a stationary point once approximately every six months. The observing window around each stationary point is approximately 1 week.
