Abstract The ultraluminous infra-red galaxy NGC 6240 has tidal tails and a double nucleus, suggesting an ongoing merger. We are imaging NGC 6240 with WFPC2 in Cycle 6, to study the nuclear distributions of stars, dust and ionized gas. Here we do follow-up STIS spectroscopy, to determine the stellar and gaseous kinematics. Our study is aimed at addressing several issues. (a) The velocity field of the ionized gas reveals a steep velocity gradient at 12 arcsec from the double nucleus. STIS will establish whether this is due to rotation around a suggested 10^{10.5} M_sun black hole or to tidal forces in the interaction. (b) The far-IR luminosity of NGC 6240 is generally attributed to dust-heating by a starburst, but a ground-based measurement of the central stellar velocity dispersion indicates too high an M/L for a starburst. STIS absorption line spectra will determine whether the stellar motions are in fact relaxed, and can be used to infer M/L. (c) An improved measurement of the stellar kinematics will allow placement of NGC 6240 on the fundamental plane, to address whether it is consistent with being an elliptical galaxy in formation. (d) STIS H_alpha+[NII] spectra will allow us to search for an AGN component which may contribute to the dust heating in NGC 6240. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8261( 6) - 02/28/00 16:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will study the ionized gas kinematics in NGC 6240 using the H_alpha+[NII] emission lines, and the stellar kinematics using the Ca II triplet absorption lines. At the redshift of NGC 6240 (z=0.02427), the H_alpha+[NII] lines are at 6707, 6722 and 6743 Angstrom. We will study them with the STIS/CCD and the G750M grating at prime tilt 6768 Angstrom. This covers the range 6481-7055 Angstrom, and thus also includes the redshifted SII lines at 6879 and 6894 Angstrom. The Ca II triplet absorption lines are redshifted to 8704, 8749 and 8872 Angstrom, and will be studied with the G750M grating at prime tilt 8825 Angstrom, which covers the range 8538-9112 Angstrom. We will take spectra along two slit position angles: (A) the position angle that connects the two nuclei of the double nucleus in NGC 6240; and (B) the major axis of `disk 2' identified from a ground-based H_alpha+[NII] velocity field by Bland-Hawthorn et al. All observations (except acquisitions) will be done with one of the following three long slits: 52X0.1, 52X0.2 and 52X0.5. Each visit starts with an ACQ point-source acquisition of a star at 18.2 arcsec from the galaxy center, followed by a slew to the position of interest. We will not follow-up on our acquisitions with an ACQ/PEAK, because a regular ACQ should yield sufficient accuracy for our purposes (of order 0.01"; Ron Downes, priv. comm.). We have obtained WFPC2 images of NGC 6240 in our Cycle 6 project GO-6430. These observations serve as EARLY-ACQ data for the present project. The observational strategy laid out in the present Phase II proposal uses coordinates, coordinate offsets and fluxes determined from these EARLY-ACQ data. Visit 1 will take observations along position angle A as defined above, and visits 3 and 4 will take observations along position angle B as defined above (there is no visit 2 defined). Most exposures have a POS TARG special requirement. A small offset of the target in the direction perpendicular to the slit is used to allow a study of the two-dimensional structure of the velocity field of the target. Small integer pixel offsets in the direction parallel to the slit are used to allow accurate removal of hot pixels during data processing. Many of the exposures use BINAXIS1 and BINAXIS2 optional parameters for on-chip rebinning, so as to obtain the best trade-off between S/N and resolution. The final exposures in each orbit are CCDFLATs, to allow correction for CCD fringing during data processing. These flats are most important for the longer wavelength setting, but we expect minor improvements in data quality for the 6768 Angstrom setting as well. These exposures can be done during occultation. Most of the CCDFLATs are taken with the same slit as for the science observations, as appropriate for an extended source. Since our target has a bright nucleus, we therefore take one CCDFLAT exposure with the 0.3X0.09 slit (as appropriate for point sources) as well (only at the 8825 Angstrom wavelength setting). This provides maximum leverage for the correction of the fringing during data analysis. After some experimentation we gave Visit 1 the special requirement SCHED 50%, and Visits 3 and 4 the special requirement SCHED 100%. This was essential so as to achieve schedulable windows. The resulting reduction in the visibility time per orbit is small, because the targets are all at a declination of +2 degrees. Additional Comments ------------------- [1] Our POS TARG special requirements generate feasibility diagnostics in RPS2, stating that the target is moved out of the slit. This is not a problem here, because the target is an extended source. Hence, this diagnostic should be ignored. [2] In some orbits RPS2 lengthens an exposure, but then complains in the form of a feasibility diagnostic that the orbit is either 0 or 1 seconds too long. This looks like an RPS2 rounding error.
