Abstract The high central density of M15 makes it unique for probing the structure and evolution of globular clusters. Our WFPC2 images reveal a central cusp in the star count distribution, consistent with either core collapse or the presence of a central black hole. To study the dynamics of M15 we have determined velocities of 1600 stars, and we are currently analyzing state-of-the-art Keck HIRES spectra and CFHT adaptive optics Fabry-Perot observations. However, neither ground-based observations nor HST proper motion work can reliably constrain the dynamics in the central 1-2 arcsec, due to crowding. A kinematic study of this central region requires the high spatial resolution and multi-object capability of HST/STIS. We propose to map the central arcsec spectroscopically in the Mg b region, stepping the 0.1 arcsec wide slit across the center in 18 steps of 0.1 arcsec, which will allow us to determine the velocity dispersion profile accurate to a few km/s. This will yield the mass-to-light ratio as function of radius, and will constrain the presence of a central black hole or nuclear concentration of dark remnants. This is the first HST study of line-of- sight velocities in any globular cluster, and will yield a unique dataset: no kinematical data exists at comparable density and spatial resolution for any other cluster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8262( 9) - 07/13/01 16:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will take STIS spectra of the central region of M15 using the G430M grating on the CCD. The prime tilt central wavelength 5216 Angstrom will be used, covering the wavelength range 5073-5359 Angstrom at 0.276 Angstrom/pixel. The most prominent absorption lines in this region are those of the Mg b triplet at 5175 Angstrom. We will use the 0.1''-wide by 52''-long slit. The slit will be placed at 18 adjacent positions separated by 0.1'', so as to scan the entire central arcsec of M15. The spatial pixel size of the CCD is 0.05''. In visits 1 and 11 we use 2-pixel on-chip rebinning along the slit (BINAXIS2=2) to reduce read-noise. In the remaining visits we do not apply this rebinning, so as to have better sampling of the PSF along the slit. None of the observations will use on-chip rebinning in the spectral direction (BINAXIS1=1). We will observe for approximately 1 orbit at each of the slit positions. For each slit position we will take 3 or 4 separate exposures. These exposures will be `dithered' by a small integer number of pixels along the slit, to allow both cosmic-ray and hot -pixel removal during data processing. This dithering is achieved using POS TARG exposure-level special requirements in combination with CR-SPLIT=NO. The spectral pixel size corresponds to 16.22 km/s per pixel. The velocity dispersion of M15 is approximately 12 km/s. Hence, we must measure individual stellar velocities to a fraction of a spectral pixel accuracy. Monte-Carlo tests were used to determine the accuracy with which the stellar velocities can be determined with the proposed setup. Artificial spectra were calculated from model atmospheres with the appropriate metallicity, surface gravity and temperature for the giant branch (V <= 18.5, B-V >= 0.7) of M15. These spectra were convolved and rebinned to the STIS setup, and noise was added. Subsequent cross-correlations with template spectra shows that we expect sufficiently accurate velocity measurements for all stars with magnitudes V < 18. It is clear that we must pay more than the usual attention to ensure proper calibration of the velocity/wavelength scale of the observations. To determine possible zero-point shifts due to thermal effects on the MSM we will take at least two WAVE exposures in each orbit; at the same time, we wish *not* to include the automatic STIS WAVE exposures. See the section `Calibration_Justification' below for a discussion. The orbital motion of the HST (7.5 km/s amplitude) will be corrected for during data processing using the VELOCST* keywords in the *_spt.fits files. The velocity inferred for a given star depends on its position within the slit. If a star is positioned on the edge of the 0.1" slit, rather than at the center, the inferred velocities will differ by approximately 8 km/s. Two things are therefore essential: (1) we need to calibrate the relation between velocity shift and miscentering; and (2) we need to accurately determine the slit positioning on the cluster for each observation. To calibrate the relation between velocity shift and miscentering we will use one orbit (visit 11) to take spectra of HD 122563, an extremely metal-poor giant outside M15 with magnitude V=6.2. High S/N spectra will be taken with the star at various positions in the direction perpendicular to the slit. The star will also be stepped by +/- 2 arcsec in the direction parallel to the slit, to determine the size of possible differential wavelength zeropoint shifts as function of position along the slit. The spectra of HD 122563 will also be used as a template for cross-correlation of the M15 star spectra. To determine the slit positioning for each of the observations of M15, we will model the observed intensity profile along the slit using our previous WFPC2 M15 imaging. Simulations show that this will allow us to determine the slit position to 0.01" accuracy. To position the telescope on the intended positions near the cluster center, we will start each visit with an ACQ acquisition. The acquisition will be done on a bright star at approximately 40 arcsec from the cluster center (ACQTYPE=POINT). This star is relatively isolated, and is the brightest in a 5"x5" box. The next brightest star is 1.5 magnitudes fainter, and should not complicate the acquisition. The GSC-system position of the star, and its offset with respect to the cluster center were both measured from our previous WFPC2 images. In general, there is no need to follow the ACQ with an ACQ/PEAK, despite the fact that we are using the 0.1" slit. The reason is that we are scanning a region, and are not pointing at any object in particular. The same is true for the observations of HD 122563. We request that the observations of HD 122563 (visit 11; 1 orbit) are done very early in the Cycle. This will give us an early indication of the velocity zeropoint accuracy that we may expect to achieve, which in turn may help us optimize our strategy for the M15 observations. Visit 11 therefore has a BEFORE visit-level special requirement. In total we have 24 orbits for observations of M15, which were broken up into 6 visits. We request that the first visit (visit 1) be done half a year or more ahead of the remaining visits (visits 2-6). Visit 1 will allow us to assess the accuracy of our strategies for wavelength zeropoint determination and slit position determination. The results will then be used to optimize the strategy for the remaining visits. This approach minimizes the probability of failure for our project as a result of an unforeseen instrument instability or calibration problem. To ensure that visit 1 will provide us as much information as possible, it includes several observations that we do not intend to perform in most of the remaining visits. (a) We will take a spectrum of the offset acquisition star, both at the beginning and the end of the orbit. This will allow us to test for inter-orbit velocity repeatability. The spectrum will also serve as an additional template for cross-correlation analysis. (b) We will perform an ACQ/PEAK before taking these spectra. This ensures that the star is centered in the slit. It also yields a determination of the pointing drift during the visit. (c) We will take a short STIS/CCD image of the cluster center at the beginning and the end of the orbit. This will provide a check both on the success of the acquisition strategy, and on the slit positioning determination. The images will use GAIN=4. All spectra in this program will use GAIN=1. All M15 observations must be obtained at one and the same orientation. However, the orientation itself may be arbitrary. For scheduling purposes, the best orientation would be one that: (i) allows observations at ORIENT and ORIENT+180 to be scheduled half a year apart; (ii) yields the largest possible schedulable window for both dates. From information on the nominal telescope ORIENT provided by the PC (Tricia Royle), we determined the optimum ORIENT to be 72.0D for visit 1, and 252.0D for visits 2-6. These values are given as visit-level special requirements below. For visits 2-6 an additional SCHED 60% special requirement provides additional scheduling opportunities. Visits 3-6 failed upon the first try (May 2001), so they were rescheduled as visits 53-56. These were given the same ORIENT as for visit 1, so as to make them schedule in Fall 2001. Knowing the ORIENT for visit 1, the slit positioning for the orbits in this visit was chosen so as to include several stars with velocities known from ground-based work. Hence, visit 1 will yield a direct estimate of the velocity calibration accuracy for the proposed setup. This information will in turn be used to improve the strategy for visits 2-6, if necessary. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No real time requirements. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Accurate knowledge of the wavelength scale for our spectra is essential, as we are trying to measure stellar velocities to a fraction of a spectral pixel. To allow accurate post facto wavelength calibration, we therefore manually inserted WAVE exposures at the beginning and end of each orbit (bracketing each set of observations). The WAVE exposures at the end of an orbit can be done in occultation, and therefore do not waste any visibility time. By contrast, the automatic STIS WAVE exposures are generally positioned in the middle of an orbit. At that time in the orbit we don't need them, and they waste precious visibility time. For this reason we set WAVECAL=NO in every orbit, so that no automatic STIS WAVE exposures are inserted. This saves us 25 times 2 minutes, or roughly a whole orbit of visibility time. The WAVECAL=NO optional parameter is cautionary use only, as reported by an RPS2 syntax error. We requested permission to use it, which was granted by the STIS team Lead (G. Kriss). Additional Comments ------------------- Our POS TARG special requirements generate feasibility diagnostics in RPS2, stating that the target is moved out of the slit. This is not a problem here. For the M15 observations the POS TARGs are used to `scan over' a spatial region without pointing at a particular object in that region. For the observations of HD 122563, the target is moved out of the slit on purpose. Hence, these RPS2 diagnostics should be ignored. A feasibility diagnostic is generated also by the fact that we list a PLATE-ID for target 2, which has a very bright magnitude of (V=6.4). This can also be ignored, because the target is not an individual point source.
