Abstract Gravitational lensing offers a novel way to detect quasar host galaxies at z > 1 and to measure their properties. In lenses, the host galaxy is magnified and stretched, improving the contrast with the quasar point source. We propose deep I-band WFPC2 imaging of five lensed systems (z=1.29, 1.59, 2.32 2.55 and 4.50) where rings and arcs of lensed hosts have been detected with NICMOS, to measure accurately the host colors and luminosities. Preliminary results suggest that the hosts (of radio-quiet quasars) are not very luminous (L < L_*). Their properties are more consistent with the evolutionary behavior of galaxies built up through continuous star- formation, rather than fully-fledged ellipticals. Even though the sample is small, lensing may offer the best chance to understand the host properties of the bulk of the high redshift quasar population. As a fringe benefit, resolving the host structure will help to determine the dark matter distribution of the foreground lens galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8268( 7) - 04/12/00 09:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain deep F814W of lensed hosts using the PC. We estimated the exposure times by producing synthetic I (F814W) images based on the NICMOS host detections and assuming a red stellar population (I-H=3 mag and I-H=4 mag). We assumed a red color (see Figure 2) so that we would have the necessary dynamic range to cover the expected colors of possible stellar populations. We did not include extinction, but dust when it is mixed with the stars affects luminosities far more than colors. Thus, because we have normalized to the observed H flux, the exposure times will be little affected by dust. Based on our simulated images, to obtain a host color accurate to ~ 0.25 mag (for I-H=3, ~ 0.5 mag for I-H=4) we need 4 orbits for BRI 0952, H 1413, and B 1600, and 6 orbits for CTQ 414 and HE 1104. We have proposed single orbit I=F814W and V=F555W images as part of the main CASTLES lens survey Cycle 8 proposal to do photometry of the lens galaxies, and we have deducted one orbit from each request in compensation. If both proposals are approved, we will rearrange the target lists so that the actual observations of the hosts are continuous integrations. For BRI 0952, where a two orbit R (F675W) observation already exists, we will simultaneously analyze the new and old data to obtain the necessary improvements in S/N ratio. Four of the lens galaxies are well modeled with ellipsoidal de Vaucouleurs profiles and one (B 1600) is an edge-on S0 or Sa. The early-type lenses are easy to remove from the images with the accuracy needed to perform photometry of the hosts. One image of the B 1600 host is well separated from the bulge and disk of the lens, but the other image overlaps the bulge and probably cannot be used. We considered and ultimately rejected obtaining PSF templates at the time of the observations as an unnecessary overhead. The lens magnification stretches the images of the host out from under the PSF core into an area where PSF subtraction can be done more easily. Our experience with existing deep WFPC2 images of MG0414+0534 and Q0957+561 shows that TinyTim synthetic PSFs are adequate for studying the lensed hosts.
