Determining how these two seemingly disparate populations are related is the goal of this proposal, in which we will study how the morphology, bulge, and disk properties of normal luminous field galaxies change from z ~ 2 to z ~ 1. Given the space density and luminosity of L_* galaxies we must survey a large area to provide a statistically significant sample of galaxies. Our sample is complete to K < 20 (drawn from imaging down to K~21.4 at 3Sigma to ensure completeness), and covers roughly 100 arcmin^2, ensuring we have several hundred galaxies m ore luminous than L_* with 1 < z < 2. Near--IR selection is very well suited for the study of galaxy evolution since the near--IR k-corrections are small, uniform over galaxy types and rather immune to evolution of the stellar population. Thus, the galaxy type mix will be the same for all redshifts, and ensures that the galaxy sample is not biased toward finding more actively evolving populations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8269( 11) - 08/22/01 13:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain WPC2 images with the F814W filter. The objective of these observations is to determine the morphology of I < 24 galaxies. These images will yield a 1Sigma detection of I = 26 mag arcsec^-2 and will be able to detect point sources with I=27 at better than the 4Sigma level. Empirical evidence shows such images will allow morphological determination. First, Driver et al.\ (1998) used the HDF to obtain morphology of galaxies down to I=26. Our galaxies will be 2 magnitudes brighter than this implying similar results can be obtained in 40 times less integration. Secondly, we have examined similar exposures from the Medium Deep Survey archive and found that reasonable morphology can be seen in I < 24 galaxies. Each of our 4 fields is roughly 5*5 arcminutes in size, and will thus require 5 separate WFPC2 pointings. Each pointing will consist of 2 orbits taking 6 minutes to acquire the guide star on orbit 1 and 5 minutes on orbit 2. To help mitigate the effects of c osmic rays and bad pixels each orbit will be split into four 10 minute exposures with 2 minutes of WPC2 overhead per exposure for each dither (6+4*(10+2)=54 minutes). Our worst case visibility will be 52 minutes per orbit, our best case will be 57 minutes per orbit. For shorter visibility fields the exposure time will be trimed slightly to allow the observations of each pointing to occur in 2 orbits. To complete the 5 needed pointings, each field will require 10 orbits. We need only 6 orbits to completely image the Lynx field since we have been allocated time in Cycle 6 to obtain deep F814W of a z = 1.27 cluster in this field, and we will have access to the WFPC2 pointing to be obtained under GO\#7374 in the Lynx field in Cycle 7(Rosati, personal communication). Thus, our total request is for 36 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No Special requirements. We have obtained deep BRIzJK band images using the KPNO 4-m. This required nearly 40 nights of 4-m telescope time. We have already obtained nearly 150 spectroscopic redshifts for R<24 galaxies under ongoing programs with Keck/LRIS and at the Palomar 200" with COSMIC.
