Abstract Following our recent success in detecting and characterizing eight cometary nuclei with the HST, we now propose a minimum program to determine the basic physical properties of a large fraction of the population of short-period comets. By acquiring statistically significant data, we can study the origin of this family of comets and test the hypothesis that they are collisional fragments from the Kuiper Belt Objects, although with much less insight than would be provided by our major proposal emphThe Origin of Short-Period Comets. Our technique takes advantage of the high resolution of the PC2 to clearly distinguish the nuclei from the surrounding comae provided they come within ~2 AU from Earth. Cycle 8 is exceptionally favorable as 13 short-period comets meet this criterion. We also propose to observe the favorably-placed Centaur, 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, which may be in transition from the Kuiper Belt to the short-period family of objects. Observations will be made through several filters (some combination of U, B, V, R, I depending on the brightness) to obtain unique color information. If appropriate, corrections will be applied to the measured sizes to remove the effect of erosion and retrieve the ``original'' size distribution function. The size and color results obtained during our survey will nearly double the number of cometary nuclei for which this information is available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8274( 19) - 02/11/00 11:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We request 1 orbit of observations for each of the 14 comets on our list. Three comets on our list deserve some special remarks: 1) 10P/Tempel 2 has been well- characterized by ground-based visible and thermal infrared observations. Our HST observations will thus provide an excellent opportunity to test our technique by direct comparison with the ground-based results. 2) 4P/Faye is the first comet we observed using HST, but with the aberrated WFPC1. We want to take advantage of the WFPC2 to improve our determination of the size of its nucleus. 3) 29P/Schwassmann- Wachmann 1 has long been considered to have a very large nucleus. It probably also has a coma even when in its ``quiescent'' state. The latest study by Meech et al. (1993, see References in Scientific Justification) using variable aperture photometry suggests a complex rotational state with two different periods. A maximum radius of 15 km is indicated, but it could be much smaller on the basis of infrared measurements by Cruikshank and Brown (Icarus, 56, 377, 1983). By monitoring this comet from the ground, we hope to select a quiescent state and then use HST measurements to cleanly separate the coma and nucleus contributions to the observed light. The orbits are filled with a sequence of broad-band imaging. The number of filters that can be used depends on the brightness of each individual nucleus, and the table in the next section summarizes our planned program. The total number of orbits requested is 14 comets * 1 orbit/comet = 14 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our observations are time-critical, as there is an optimum date to observe each comet. This requirement is, however, not unduly restrictive because of the very slow change of the geometric conditions for the selected comets; the observing window is typically +/-20 days. The optimal observing windows are listed in a visit-level special requirement for each comet. PLEASE TRY TO OBSERVE EACH COMET AS CLOSE TO THE CENTER OF THE LISTED VISIBILITY WINDOW AS POSSIBLE. Whenever possible, high resolution ground-based CCD and thermal infrared images will be obtained over a period overlapping the HST observations in order to complement them and to detect any unusual circumstances, such as outburts. However, the objectives of our program can be achieved without these supporting observations.
