Abstract Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects, representing one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena, while extraordinarily useful as probes of their environments and of the early Universe. In earlier Cycles we carried out extensive HST snapshot imaging of the 3CR sources to investigate their optical characteristics. Here we propose a major enhancement to a superb dataset: to obtain UV images of the 3CR sources at z < 0.1. A crucial motivation is to offer a zero redshift comparison sample for the extraordinary radio galaxy morhpologies found at high redshift (where UV emission is imaged). Are we witnessing the effects of evolution or of wavelength? We aim to determine whether the alignment effect holds at zero redshift in the UV; we aim to identify regions of star formation along radio axes, associated with dust-lanes, tidal interactions, or elsewhere; we will probe old stellar populations by imaging old hot stars in these predominantly giant ellipticals and measuring radial and isophotal profiles; we will measure brightnesses and frequency of UV nuclei and measure dust extinction through the interesting 2200 Angstrom\ region; we will seek spectral turnovers in known synchrotron jets and hot spots, and may find new ones with increased contrast against the host galaxies. The resulting database will be an incredibly valuable resource to the astronomical community immediately and for years to come. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8275( 7) - 11/04/99 08:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ sectionSample choice The attractiveness of the 3CR catalog as a basis for HST imaging studies is clear: it is unbiased in that respect, spans a wide range in redshift and radio power and offers a source of numerous radio galaxies at both low and high redshift. There is a vast suite of ground- and spaced-based observations for comparison. Synthesis radio images of all 3CR sources exist and optical spectra exist for all 3CR radio galaxies (Laing et al). Line emission images have been presented by Baum et al. (1988) and McCarthy (1988), and long-slit optical spectra by Baum, Heckman &\ van Breugel (1990), McCarthy (1988). The IRAS properties of 3CR radio galaxies were studied by Golombek, Miley and Neugebauer (1988), near infrared photometry by Lilly and Longair (1982, 1984), and X--rays by Fabbiano et al. (1984). All sources have been identified optically, and redshifts measured for all but two, Spinrad et al. (1985), Djorgovski et al. (1988). The completeness properties are discussed by Laing, Riley and Longair (1983). The sample has a maximum redshift of 2.54, the median redshift of the radio galaxies is 0.27, and the 3CR spans nearly five orders of magnitude in radio luminosity (10^41 - 10^46 ergs/sec). It is because the 3CR sample is so well studied that it is such an ideal sample for an HST snapshot survey seeking to explore the nature of radio galaxies. Here, we propose to obtain UV images of the low redshift portion of the sample, z < 0.1, in order to provide a basis for comparison with existing imaging of high z radio (and normal) galaxies, as well as offering insights into the structure and evolution of the host galaxies. The sample definition is the revised 3C as defined by Bennet (1962a, b), 298 sources, restricted to those sources with redshift z < 0.1, and we further eliminate sources with Galactic latitude b < 10^degrees to leave a total of 51 sources. sectionObservations We propose to obtain 20 --- 30 min STIS/NUV MAMA exposures with the recommended F25SRF2 filter to bring the image to good focus. We will require fine-lock guiding. To determine feasibility, we use as our baseline the expected UV surface brightness of the old stellar populations. Burstein et al. (1988) find a typical Log f_lambda(2200 Angstrom) - Log f_Lambda(V) ~ -1.3, approximately flat through the NUV spectral region. The ``upturn'' typically starts around Lambda ~ 2600 Angstrom . We have chosen to carry these observations out in the NUV rather than the FUV for several important reasons. First, the STIS NUV-MAMA is appreciably more sensitive for this type of science than the FUV-MAMA by virtue of its increased throughput and the very wide band width achievable. Second, the expected flux in the FUV could not be so nearly well predicted as that in the NUV. Thus FUV-MAMA observations would not be well suited to snapshots. Finally, the NUV-MAMA is preferred for these observations scientifically as well, as the NUV-MAMA sensitivity peaks at roughly 2200A, which is the maximum in the dust opacity. Our observed useful HST surface brightnesses are typically in the range Mu_R ~ 17--- 20 mag/arcsec^2, (quite often brighter), which translates to a V surface brightness of ~ 2.2* 10^-16 to 1.4* 10^-17 erg/s/cm^2/arcsec^2/Angstrom , or with the scaling from Burstein et al. f_lambda(2200 Angstrom) ~ 1.1* 10^-17 to 7.0* 10^-19 erg/s/cm^2/arcsec^2/Angstrom . For an 1800 sec exposure, binning 2* 2 to give pixels essentially the same size as the PC, we would achieve an S/N per pixel of ~ 2 in the brightest pixel, or 0.2 in the faintest, and spatial smoothing is used to obtain the final image. These are extremely conservative estimates: the STIS ETC model elliptical has UV flux 10\ and IUE archival observations of 3CR sources often show high UV upturns. See Description of the Observations for details. endfigure As shown in Fig. 2, this is perfectly adequate for determination of the UV morphology and radial photometric profile. In Fig. 2, rather than these illustrative quantities, we take the actual R observations of a typical source, 3C 272.1, and scale the R image according to the Burstein et al factor, above. Adding sky background, detector dark and Poisson noise as given by the STIS ETC results in the raw simulation shown in the left hand panel. Smoothing that with a gaussian sigma of 3 pixels results in the right hand panel, where it is hopefully clear that good photometric characterization is straightforward, and that the S/N is sufficient even if only the old stellar component contributes. In reality we expect AGN, jets and star formation to contribute additionally while dust will eat out a much more contrasty set of filaments than those of the R image shown. sectionPersonnel Our team has a proven track record in these and related fields, and of working with HST imaging data. Members of our team have previously been heavily involved in the determination and analysis of the optical properties of the 3CR survey specifically, and are intimately familiar with its content, while both they and the others offer expertise in the physics of radio sources in general and in the optical properties of radio galaxies, and the UV properties at high redshift. This experience will be important in drawing together rapidly the disparate databases involved in the statistical comparisons we wish to make. The applicants have strong technical expertize in HST imaging work. The PI has worked as Instrument Scientist at STScI for the FOC, WFPC2, and was NICMOS group lead for two years. Baum is currently the STIS group lead, and Biretta the WFPC2 group lead. Martel is the postdoctoral researcher funded by the grants associated with the 3C snapshot program, and has provided energetic full -time support and analysis effort for the project. De Koff is using the optical data for her Ph.D. thesis at Leiden, supervised by Miley. sectionProprietary Rights Above, we have highlighted a number of specific problems which we intend to investigate with these data. However, we believe that data obtained under this and related programs will provide an exceptionally valuable resource to the astronomical community for other purposes: HST UV images on one of the best studied samples in history, with both continuum and line emission information already available in many cases. We are prepared therefore to accept a reduced proprietary period for the data we propose to acquire in this project, and we are willing to permit public access to this resource after only three months.
