Abstract We propose to carry out a major ultraviolet spectral survey of "coronal" late-type stars using the powerful capabilities of STIS. The origin of the hot UV emissions of otherwise cool stars is a fundamental puzzle in astrophysics, and is linked closely with another long-standing mystery, that of late-type winds. Stars are the powerhouses and chemical factories of galaxies. The source of their ionizing radiations and the driving of their mass loss are of paramount importance in studies ranging from population synthesis, galactic chemical evolution, and cosmic rays to planetary atmospheres and terrestrial "space weather." Magnetic phenomena--at the heart of coronal activity and perhaps wind driving as well--are crucial in many cosmic settings, particularly dynamic environments such as associated with accretion and mass-transfer. Stars are accessible "laboratories without walls" in which to study the interplay of magnetic and plasma processes, and seek a unification with the h ig hly refined--but singular--portrait of the Sun painted by an array of recent orbiting observatories. The missing link: high-quality ultraviolet spectra of a diverse collection of late-type stars. Such a major project was unthinkable before STIS, but the high resolution, broad spectral coverage, and sensitivity of the second generation spectrograph can capture the stellar equivalent of a Hubble Deep Field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8280( 7) - 08/16/99 14:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ SELECTION OF SAMPLE------------------- Our objective is to provide comprehensive ultraviolet spectral material for a representative set of coronal late-type stars. It is vital that we have both a suitable sample and a uniform observing strategy, so the data will have enduring value for the broader community. Our target list (13 stars: 16 were proposed, but 3 of the fainter ones were eliminated owing to a reduction in the orbits allocated to the program) concentrates on spectral type G (with a few late-F and early-Ks): stars with surface temperatures--and photospheric kinetic flux densities-- similar to the Sun. The sample covers a wide range in luminosity class, and thus MS progenitor mass, evolutionary status, and internal structure. The sample was drawn from the RIASS "Coronathon" survey of several years ago. The Coronathon consisted of carefully selected magnitude-limited samples within key spectral type/luminosity class zones, restricted to single stars or wide (non- int er acting) binaries. Extensive supporting information was collected, including IUE spectroscopy, rotational velocities, and X-ray fluxes from the RASS and ROSAT pointings. Luminosities are based on the new Hipparcos distances. ASCA and EUVE spectra have been obtained for some of the objects. Within the Coronathon sample, we identified a group of bright (V~ 3-5) stars that had not been observed previously by GHRS (or STIS), or GTO-reserved. Although any star recorded by GHRS would benefit from re-observation by STIS, we felt that diversification was a higher priority. The final list was weak in the area of the supergiants, so we added the key class-Ib star Epsilon Gem which falls near the blue loops in the 6-7 solar mass range (where the prototype "hybrids" [cool wind + corona] Alpha Aqr and Alpha TrA lie). Most of the stars fall in contrasting active/quiet pairs (either within the sample, or with respect to existing or planned STIS targets). EXPOSURE CONSIDERATIONS----- ------------------ The energy distribution of a typical G star is a nearly pure emission-line spectrum shortward of 1700 A; a rapidly rising photospheric continuum with numerous strong emission lines in the 1700-2400 A region; and a bright, highly structured continuum at longer wavelengths interrupted by occasional deep absorption features, a few with central emission cores (e.g., Mg II 2796). One must take a deep exposure at the shortwavelength end in echelle medium resolution to record the comparatively faint emission lines there, but can get away with a much shorter observation at the long wavelength end, even at the highest echelle resolution. SELECTION OF GRATINGS AND APERTURES----------------------------------- The 0.2X0.2 "photometric" slot for E140M produces maximum S/N in a given exposure time, without a significant sacrifice in resolving power. The default 1425 setting covers the interval 1150 -1700 A. A CCD PEAKUP in one of the "X0.05ND3" slots will ensure a precise ve lo city scale zero point. At the longer wavelengths, a single E230M setting (2124) will be used to cover the interval 1720-2528 A. The 0.2X0.06 aperture achieves optimum resolution for that setting. A PEAKUP is required for this exposure. The region longward of 2500 A will be covered by two settings of E230H: 2663 (2524-2801 A) and 2862 (2723-3000 A). The 0.2X0.09 aperture provides optimum resolution with good throughput. For the two faintest targets- -35 Cnc and HR9024--the high-res echelle settings will be replaced by E230M/2707. It covers approximately the same spectral interval, but with much higher sensitivity. The two targets are G giants with broad emission lines, and are not a priority with regard to ISM absorptions, so the highest resolution is unnecessary. A prior PEAKUP is required. In most cases, a particular setting will be repeated two (or more) times, with comparable exposures, to provide redundancy; useful for identifying transient pixel artifacts, for exam pl e. Furthermore, the important Mg II 2796 feature is contained in both of the E230H settings, but on different portions of the NUV-MAMA, thus mitigating fixed pattern noise and boosting S/N. We also have set up each exposure sequence so that the crucial E140M series always is preceeded by a narrow-aperture PEAKUP (again, to ensure the most precise wavelength scale possible). In (most) cases where E230M/2124 and E140M both appear in a five-orbit sequence, we include PEAKUPs immediately before each series. In multiple-visit situations, we place PEAKUPs in front of the longest duration E140M or E230M sequences in the respective visits. ACQUISITIONS AND PEAKUPS------------------------ For all but the two brightest targets--Beta Aqr and Epsilon Gem--initial target acquisition will be done with F28X50OIII, with exposures of 0.1S, except for 35 Cnc and HR9024 (0.5S and 0.3S, respectively). For the two bright targets, F25ND5 will be used with 1S exposures. The PEAKUPs will be done w ith 0.3X0.05ND(3) with exposure times ranging from 0.1-0.3S; except for 35 Cnc and HR9024, where 0.2X0.05ND(2) will be used with exposure times of 0.2S and 0.1S, respectively. All cases will yield S/N > 125, according to the STIS ETC. EXPOSURE TIME ESTIMATES----------------------- All of the targets have been observed with IUE, so we have accurate estimates of the integrated fluxes of the bright lines. Many of the targets superficially are similar to stars already recorded in a few key intervals by GHRS, so we can estimate line widths, and relative intensities of fainter lines not detected by IUE. We chose a set of spectral ``bellwethers'' to allow us to calculate exposure times to meet specific S/N criteria. For E140M, we picked Si IV 1393, a valuable coronal proxy near the sensitivity maximum of the mode. The exposure criterion is 1000 counts per resolution element at the line peak, yielding S/N~ 30. The key optically thin O IV 1401 intersystem line typically is 1/10th t he strength of 1393, so will be recorded at S/N~ 10. It is a crucial diagnostic for mass motions. Other members of the O IV multiplet are "density-sensitive, " but significantly weaker (up to 5X) than 1401. With these, however, we can forgo detailed profile shapes in favor of integrated fluxes (accumulated over many resolution elements). Additional key features of the 1150-1700 A region either are comparable to Si IV (e.g., C IV 1548, O I 1305, and C II 1335 in dwarfs) or much stronger (e.g., H I 1215 and Si III 1206; O I 1305 in giants). In the mid-UV range, Si III 1892 is the bellwether for E230M. Like O IV 1401, optically thin 1892 is a valuable atmospheric "speedometer." We adopted a S/N target of 15:1 at the line peak. The resolving power of E230M/0.2X0.06 should be comparable to E140M/0.2X0.2, namely about 30, 000. The important chromospheric Si II triplet near 1815 A usually is much brighter than 1892, although the E230M sensitivity is lower there. The semiforbidd en multiplets of C II and Si II in the 2350 A region become visible in the cooler, more luminous objects. They are important density and velocity diagnostics, typically are much brighter than 1892, and fall where the E230M sensitivity is high. In the longwavelength interval, Mg II 2796 is the bellwether for E230H. Mg II is a key tracer of chromospheric conditions, one of the major radiative cooling channels for T< 10, 000 K, and a vital diagnostic for cool winds. It can be recorded at high S/N in short exposures. Nevertheless, one also wants to detect possibly weak interstellar components, or low-contrast wind absorptions in the faint Mg II wings. S/N~ 75 at the line peak gives a good balance between exposure duration and weak-feature detectability. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Three of the targets are available in the CVZ at least four times during the year. CVZ orbits cut the observing time requirements in half, and represent the most efficient use of HST resources. Calibration Justification ------------------------- This program is a large one, using the same sequence of four unique STIS settings for each of the 13 targets, so it is important that those modes be well calibrated photometrically, and with regard to the echelle blaze function (actually, a fifth mode is used for two targets but it--E230M/2707--is a prime tilt, so it is routinely calibrated). E140M/1425 also is a prime tilt and is routinely calibrated, but the other three settings--E230M/2124, E230H/2663, E230H/2862--are secondary tilts, so ordinarily might not receive satisfactory attention. We therefore ask the calibration team to include these settings in their plan for cycle 8. A minimum goal would be to observe the reference star BD+28D4211 in the three modes; with exposure times of at least 450S and a frequency sufficient to track secular changes in sensitivity. We would be happy to work with the calibration team on this issue, and help analyze the resulting data to produce suitable reference files.
