Abstract Gl 229B is the only unambiguous brown dwarf. It can be imaged with high astrometric and photometric accuracy only by HST. For the first time, we have an opportunity to study the object over an extended period of time. The possibilities for detecting planets or moons orbiting Gl 229B are quite promising because Gl 229B's small size, mass, and distance from us amplify the expected signals. We will be able to detect a companion if it is almost as small as Earth, and in a close orbit (similar to those occupied by Jupiter's moons) that is favourably inclined. Such a body in such an orbit might well have formed in the accretion disk from which Gl 229B grew. On the other hand, a higher mass companion in a wider orbit will be detected by the reflex motion it induces on Gl 229B itself, with a search radius limited only by the time baseline over which the observations are carried out. Any detection of a companion will allow the immediate determination of the mass of Gl 229B. An additional benefit of the monitoring proposed here is that if there are stationary and long lived surface features on Gl 229B like Jupiter's giant red spot, we will detect them and hence measure the rotation period of the brown dwarf. Finally, variations in the intrinsic luminosity could be caused by weather in its highly convective atmosphere. Even if no planetary companion is detected, this proposal will establish the variability or lack thereof of this unique object. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8290( 6) - 12/08/99 14:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Images will be recorded through two broadband filters: F814W (WFPC2 I), and F1042M (1 um) (Burrows et al. 1995). To guarantee accurate astrometry of Gl 229 A and B, unsaturated images of each component will be obtained by recording sets of two short (1.6 s) and two long (500 s) exposures through F1042M. Between the exposures of each set, the pointing is offset in successive steps of 0."2275 (5 PC pixels) along the rows and columns of the CCD. These inter- exposure offsets ensure that neither cosmic-ray events nor defective pixels skew the image centroids. Similarly, two-exposure sets of 300 s will be recorded through F814W. The whole sequence is designed to fit in one orbit. This orbit is repeated on each visit to the target. These sets permit inspection of the circumstellar field with varying sensitivity beyond 0."25 from Gl 229A. For the 1.6 s, exposures, a gain of 14 e-/DN will be used to minimize detector saturation by Gl 229A. For the longer exposures, a gain of 7 e-/DN will be used to enhance sensitivity to faint field sources. During the exposures longer than 1.6 s, the pixels in the PC's serial register will be continually clocked to minimize the effect of charge overflow. A spacecraft roll will be selected so that the position angle of Gl 229B (P.A. = 163 deg) does not coincide with the diffraction spikes or the charge overflow from the saturated image of Gl 229A. Data from the three Wide Field Cameras (WFC's) are also obtained, providing partial coverage of the circumstellar field up to 2' from Gl 229A, and a cross check on the astrometric and photometric stability of the instrument. The number of visits we are requesting is 16. This is made up of 10 spaced unevenly over a period of 4 days (with geometric increments of 1.3 alternating away from a central pair spaced by one orbit). This strategy for looking for signals with unknown period has been used successfully in the Cepheid program. It should detect a periodic signal from one orbit (which is subsampled by the exposures) to a period of 3 days due either to occultations or surface rotation. The remaining 6 orbits would be spaced over the year with the aim of detecting longer period photometric terms or an astrometric perturbation. With 16 visits, we would expect one occultation per moon in the most favourable edge on viewing geometry. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Particular roll angle ranges will be specified for each exposure to ensure that diffraction spikes and column bleeding in the PC are avoided.
