Abstract This is a continuation request for GO 6047/6566/7493. We will use HST-FGS1R to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation (MLR) for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. Our goals are to determine M_V values to 0.10 magnitude, masses to 5%, and more than double the number of objects with masses determined to be less than 0.20 Msun. This program uses the combination of HST-FGS3/FGS1R at optical wavelengths and ground-based infrared speckle work to examine nearby, subarcsecond binary systems. Several of the objects included have M < 0.1 Msun, placing them at the very end of the stellar main sequence, and making them brown dwarf candidates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8292( 27) - 10/06/00 09:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Each of the eight systems will be observed in both TRANS and POS modes (both modes in the same orbit). For the TRANS observations, scans 1--3" in length are made across the system. POS mode observations will include multiple runs through the following sequence: target, drift star check, reference stars, target, drift star check. The F583W aperture has been selected because it is currently the best calibrated of the filters available in FGS. Each of the eight systems will be observed once in Cycle 8 in TRANS mode through filter F583W to determine the separation, position angle, and brightness difference between the components. The single exception is GJ 1081, which will be observed twice during Cycle 8 (near the beginning and end). Six systems will be observed in POS mode as well, in order to place the components in a grid of reference stars so that fractional masses can eventually be determined. Real Time Justification ----------------------- GJ 1081 will be observed near the beginning and end of Cycle 8. All other targets will be observed at times during Cycle 8 that provide optimal orbital coverage. CVZ observations will be used to increase the number of TRANS scans (and hence, signal to noise) for Gl 22 and G 250-29.
