Abstract We propose to study six massive blue clusters in M31. U, B, V photometry will provide important data on the stellar population of these clusters, a type virtually unknown in the Milky Way. Comparison of the cluster CMDs with models will allow us to age-date them and to explore the evolutionary parameters, such as stellar mass loss, that are more difficult to study in our Galaxy's much more sparsely-poulated young clusters, which have very few evolved stars in any given cluster. Photometry of the supergiant stars will allow us to constrain the metallicity, one of the probable parameters relevant to the formation of this type of massive cluster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8296( 3) - 08/24/99 07:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe 6 massive blue clusters in M31 with the WFPC-2 on HST. Of these clusters, 2 pairs are close enough to each other to be observable in a single WFPC-2 image, so 4 fields will be targeted. We will observe each cluster with 3 filters, F336W, F439W, and F555W. Our goal is to obtain photometry down to 25th magnitude, well below the expected main-sequence turn off. We will require three orbits for each pointing. For the the F336W filter images, we will need a total of 3000 seconds of exposure time, divided into multiple exposures for CR Rejection. For the F439W filter, we will need a total exposure time of 1500 seconds, divided into three 500 second exposures for CR Rejection. Finally, for the F555W filter, we will need a total exposure time of 1200 sec, or three 400 second exposures. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None, not needed.
