Abstract The morphological transformation from the spherically symmetric circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars to the complex, bipolar structures of planetary nebulae has remained one of the major unresolved problems in the late stages of stellar evolution. Recent HST observations of proto-planetary nebulae and planetary nebulae have found evidence for jets and radial filaments suggesting that non-isotropic outflows are occuring during the early stages of planetary nebula evolution. However, the morphology of very young planetary nebulae have not been extensively studied by the HST. In this proposal, we have selected a group of compact (< 2^ ) and high radio surface brightness planetary nebulae to image in three narrow bands (HAlpha, N ii, and O iii) to determi ne the morphological structures as a function of ionization. With these images, we should be able to detect any previously unseen haloes, arcs, jets, and knots, and derive the physical conditions of these features at the ea rliest stage of PN evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8307( 4) - 09/20/99 09:32 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain narrow-band images of 10 young PN using the F656N, F658N and F502N filters. Using the emission line fluxes from the Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (Acker et al. 1992) and assuming that the flux is distributed uniformly over the nebula, the brightness of our targets is found to range from 2.7 10^-11 to 6.3 10^-13 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^ -2, 3.5 10^-12 to 9.1 10^-14 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2, and 6.3 10^-11 to 2.8 10^-13 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2 for HAlp ha, N ii, and O iii respectively. With the configuration of Planetary Camera and A/D gain 7 e-/DN, the Exposure Time Calculator was used to estimate the S/N ratio for each target. For the objects which have have HAlpha and O iii brightness ~ 10^-11 er gs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2, a total 10 min exposure can give a S/N ~ 240 and ~226 respectively. For the objects which have N ii brightness ~ 10^-12 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2, a total 20 min exposure can give a S/N ~ 120. I ncluding the overheads (guide- sta r acquisition, target acquisition and instrument overheads), each visit has >= 40 min on source exposure. Therefore, each of the first four targets can be observed with high S/N ratio in three filters in one visit. For the objects which have the HAlpha br ightness ~ 10^-12, a total 15-20 min exposure is required to give a S/N ~ 70-100. For the objects which have the N ii brightness ~ 10^-13 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2, a total 20 min exposure can give S/N ~ 50. For the objects which have the O iii brightne ss ~ 10^- 13, a total 40 min exposure can give S/N ~ 30. The required visits for each target is listed in Table 1. We request a total 15 visits for the 10 objects.
