Abstract We propose to obtain snapshot unfiltered STIS images of distant galaxies of known redshift which have hosted supernovae (SNe) of Type Ia found via the Supernova Cosmology Project. The Hubble diagram of these SNe yields measurements of the cosmological parameters (Omega, Lambda) that are inconsistent with a flat Universe of zero cosmological constant. Even if the universe is not flat, Lambda > 0 is indicated with strong statistical confidence > 99 this confidence is now limited more by the possibility of systematic errors than by statistical uncertainty. In particular, it is important to justify convincingly that effects of the environments of low and high redshift SNe are accounted for by current lightcurve width-color- luminosity correction methods. HST will secure high resolution images to test this hypothesis. We will look for correlations between the luminosity or lightcurve width of the SNe and the host galaxy morphologies and positions of SNe with respect to their host galaxies. We will identify a subset of SNe that are far from the host galaxy, and thus likely to be un-extincted, and use them to obtain an independent check on the effect of extinction on the cosmological parameter measurements. Host galaxy morphologies will also provide new constraints on possible evolution of the SN Ia rate as a function of redshift and galaxy type which can be compared to predictions based on global star formation histories. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8313( 3) - 02/17/99 13:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ sectionThe Need for HST and the Suitability of the Snapshot Mode HST has demonstrated its ability to determine the morphology of galaxies at the mean redshift of our SN sample (z~eq0.5) and objective techniques have been developed to analyse HST images (Abraham et al 1996). Our ground-based images contain ~eq5-8 sources within the STIS field sufficient to define the astrometric location of the SN to better than ~eq0.2 arcsec. The host galaxies are generally luminous and not demanding targets. As snapshots would be taken randomly from our list of 63 fields, incompleteness is of no concern. The superb image quality and the high efficiency of STIS make a snapshot imaging programme highly suited to our scientific goals. sectionRequirements We require images of sufficient signal/noise to determine the morphology of galaxies of known absolute magnitude and redshift. We have addressed the requirements using both the STIS simulator and by directly examining parallel STIS images with exposure times close to those proposed (1500 sec in 3 dithered 500 sec units). On the basis of extensive studies with WFPC-2 (Abraham et al 1996), we have found that a reliable galaxy morphology at z~eq0.4-0.8 requires a S/N=1 per 0.1 arcsec box at a limiting surface brightness of Mu_B=24.1 arcsec^-2 and Mu_R=25.5 arcsec^-2. These isophotal limits correspond to 3 scale lengths in a disk galaxy at z~eq0.5 consistent with such sources being marginally resolved from the ground. The STIS simulator indicates this can be achieved in 1500 sec. A reality check confirms this s/n directly (Fig. 5). Real Time Justification ----------------------- The Supernova Cosmology Project is willing to waive the proprietary time for the snapshot programme provided this can apply to the data after completion of the first year of snapshot observations. Given the images would arrive at a slow rate, even a modest proprietary period would otherwise mean others could construct samples almost as large as ours at any time and decide to publish ahead of us. Our international collaboration has an ongoing worldwide campaign to discover high and intermediate redshift SNe, follow their light curves and obtain host galaxy redshifts. The programme has used and continues to use the Keck, KPNO, WHT, INT, CTIO, CFHT and WIYN telescopes in addition to precision photometric work with HST's WFPC-2 and NICMOS.
