Abstract We propose to obtain the first direct, accurate measurements of mass accretion rates for intermediate mass (1.5M(sun) to 3.5M(sun)) T Tauri stars (TTS), precursors of the Beta Pic- type stars. Observations in the far and near ultraviolet with the low resolution STIS spectrographs will be used to measure the excess luminosity produced by the accretion of protoplanetary disk material onto the central star. These measurements cannot be made at optical wavelengths for these stars because of the lack of contrast between the excess emission and the photospheric flux. These observations, combined with our accretion shock column modelling, will provide for the first time measurements of the mass accretion rate for intermediate mass TTS. With these measurements and our existing infrared line fluxes, we will extend our present calibrations of accretion luminosity with emission line luminosity for low mass TTS to the entire range of mass covered by these stars. This will provide a po we rful tool for rapidly obtaining mass accretion rates for large samples of stars in different evolutionary stages and environments, enabling the effective study of stellar and protoplanetary disk formation and evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8317( 3) - 02/16/99 16:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to observe a sample of 9 intermediate mass T Tauri stars, corresponding to masses 1.5 Msun to 3.5 Msun, and to spectral types from K1 to F8, using the first-order long-slit spectroscopic mode with STIS/ NUV- and FUV- MAMA, with gratings G230L and G140L. We will use the 2.0 arc second-wide slit to increase the signal to noise and the photometric accuracy. We have used the existing IUE observations, combined with our theoretical models to estimate exposure times. For all 9 objects, exposure times were estimated to yield signal to noise per resolution element (S/N) in the continuum equal or larger than 10 in the near UV (2376 A). For 3 objects, to which we dedicate 2 orbits each, we will obtain S/N greater than 10 at 1425 A with the long exposures at far UV. The aim is to be able to detect the broad spectral features, in addition to the continuum level in these stars. The FUV spectra for the 5 objects observed one orbit each will be somewhat lower; if necessary, we wi ll sacrifice resolution in the data reduction to improve the signal to noise, but this will not affect our main objective, the measurement of the continuum level. Finally, for one object, the fainter of the sample, we will obtain only NUV spectra. One of the stars of the sample, GW Ori, is a spectroscopic single line binary, but most of the luminosity is in the primary (Mathieu et al. 1991) Real Time Justification ----------------------- We will obtain UBVRI photometry around the time of the HST observations with the 1m reflector of the National Observatory in Venezuela and with the CTIO/Yale 1 m telescope. The program stars will be monitored over a period of some weeks around the observations, to estimate the degree of variability. We will also try to obtain additional photometric monitoring with the FLWO 1.2m telescope on Mt. Hopkins, Arizona.
