Abstract We propose the continuation of FGS measurements of the orbital motion of young stars successfully carried out in Cycle 7 and earlier cycles. We need to continue these observations to acquire sufficient data to determine the orbital parameters of the binaries. Our goal is to measure the masses of low mass young stars. This will enable a calibration of theoretical calculations of stellar evolution to the main sequence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8319( 11) - 11/09/00 07:18 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All observations require FGS1R and the F583W filter. ZZ Tau, Elias 12, V853 Oph, ROX 42B will be observed only in TRANSFER function mode. We request two observations per year to obtain good sampling of their orbits. We calculate the exposure time to reach adequate S/N for a V=16 mag secondary and need an FGS scan of 1.5'' per axis to be certain to include the entire system. To satisfy these constraints, we require 10 Transfer Function mode scans at 180 seconds/scan. We have found that we can fit ~ 2100 s of observation into an orbit and have obtained good data. The parallax measurement of DF Tau requires a series of POS/ TRANS/MODE observations, each obtained in one orbit, at approximately 6 month intervals. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The targets are in the dark cloud regions of Taurus and Ophiuchus so guide star availability is a problem. In practice, this has meant that each target can be observed only in certain time intervals. Denise Taylor has identified these and the HST has observed each of the targets several times now. The time intervals suggested in the visits information section have worked in the past. Please contact the PI if the suggested times are unavailable or cause a problem. Calibration Justification ------------------------- All the targets are red with (B-V) in the range 0.9 to 2.2. We will need FGS reference scans of stars in this range of color.
